Prologue
The warehouse was deathly quiet, save for the soft hum of the overhead lights. Their flicker cast uneven shadows across the cold concrete floor, amplifying the tension that hung in the air. Crates stacked to the ceiling loomed like silent witnesses, their contents a mystery, yet unimportant at the moment. At the center of the room stood Alexander “Xander” Romano, his tailored suit a stark contrast to the gritty surroundings. His composure was unnerving, a calm in the eye of the storm, even as the man kneeling before him trembled visibly. Blood dripped steadily from the traitor’s nose, staining the floor in front of him. “You had one job, Marco,” Xander said, his voice cold and sharp. “To protect what’s ours.” He adjusted the cufflinks on his sleeve with deliberate precision. “Yet here we are, discussing why you thought it wise to sell me out to the Russians.” “Boss” Marco stammered, his voice cracking. “It wasn’t like that—” Xander raised a hand, and the room fell silent. His men stood like statues, guns resting loosely in their hands but ready to fire at the slightest nod. “Enough,” he said, his tone smooth but deadly. “You put everything I built at risk. There’s no excuse for that.” Marco’s lips quivered as he opened his mouth to protest again, but before he could speak, Xander’s hand darted forward. The slap echoed in the cavernous space, cutting through the oppressive quiet. The traitor crumpled further, his hands pressing into the floor as though trying to sink into it. Xander crouched down, his face inches from Marco’s. His gray eyes were icy, devoid of any warmth. “Do you know what loyalty means to me?” Xander asked softly, almost conversationally. “It’s the one currency that never loses value. And you—” His voice hardened as he stood abruptly. “You devalued yourself.” The silence that followed was suffocating, broken only by Marco’s ragged breathing. But then, just as Xander opened his mouth to deliver the final order, the distant sound of tires screeching against asphalt pierced the air. Xander stiffened, his instincts kicking in. He turned sharply toward his second-in-command, Adrian, who had already drawn his gun. “What was that?” Xander demanded. Adrian didn’t answer. His phone buzzed in his pocket, and he yanked it out, his face darkening as he read the message. “Boss, it’s an ambush,” he said grimly. The words barely registered before the warehouse door exploded inward with a deafening crash. Men in black stormed in, guns blazing. “Get down!” Adrian roared, shoving Xander behind a stack of crates. The room erupted into chaos. Xander’s men returned fire, but the attackers had the advantage of surprise. Xander moved like a predator, methodical and precise, firing off shots that dropped enemy after enemy. But even he wasn’t invincible. A sharp pain exploded in his side, and he stumbled, clutching at the sudden warmth spreading through his shirt. Blood. “Boss, you got shot!” Adrian shouted, dragging him back behind cover. Xander gritted his teeth. His vision blurred as the pain intensified, but he refused to show weakness. Not here. Not now. By the time the dust settled, the ground was littered with bodies—some friends, some foes. The traitor, Marco, lay slumped against a crate, lifeless. Adrian crouched beside Xander, his expression tight with concern. “We need to get you out of here,” Adrian said firmly. “No hospitals,” Xander growled, his voice hoarse. “Understood. I’ll find someone.” Xander nodded faintly, his energy draining fast. He hated this—being vulnerable, needing help. But even the strongest empires crumbled without care. As Adrian barked orders, Xander’s thoughts drifted. In his world, trust was a luxury, and loyalty came with a price. Tonight, he had paid that price in blood. Little did he know, the person who would save him wasn’t from his world at all. And she would change everything.
