Chapter Two: The Man Who Chose Someone Else

1102 Words
Sophie Hayes had thought she had learned her lesson. She told herself she would never trust easily again. She would never fall so hard, so fast, only to have her heart ripped out. And yet, two years after Ryan, a new man had entered her life. His name was Daniel. Daniel was different. At least, that’s what she told herself. Gentle. Patient. Attentive. Unlike Ryan, who had treated love like a game, Daniel made her feel… safe. It started slowly, with casual conversations at a mutual friend’s birthday party. Daniel had approached her by the kitchen counter, smiling, eyes full of curiosity. “You look bored,” he had said. Sophie laughed lightly, a little embarrassed. “Parties aren’t really my thing.” “Mine neither,” Daniel admitted. “But free food convinced me to come.” They had talked all night, and for the first time in a long time, Sophie felt a spark of something she thought she had lost: hope. Weeks turned into months. Daniel was steady, never flirty with other women, never pushy. He listened when Sophie spoke, remembered small details about her life, asked thoughtful questions. He didn’t rush her. He didn’t play games. Sophie allowed herself to feel something she hadn’t in years: comfort. One evening, two months into their relationship, Daniel asked her to dinner at a quiet little restaurant downtown. Candlelight, soft music, the kind of place that made Sophie feel like she had stepped into a romantic movie scene. Halfway through the meal, Daniel’s expression shifted. Serious, almost hesitant. “Sophie,” he said, “can I ask you something?” Her heart skipped. “Of course.” “Where do you see us in the future?” His voice was calm, but there was a weight behind it. Sophie’s stomach knotted. She hadn’t expected that question yet. “I… I don’t know,” she admitted honestly. “I like being with you. I just… I don’t think about the future too much.” Daniel nodded slowly, studying her face. “I see.” The rest of dinner passed in an uneasy silence. Sophie could feel a shift, a subtle tension she couldn’t explain. Months later, Daniel had become a huge part of her life. They went on trips together, met each other’s friends, even attended small family gatherings. Sophie allowed herself to imagine a life with him, small daydreams of marriage, of stability, of finally being loved completely. And then, one evening, everything came crashing down. Sophie had gone to a small café near her office for a quick coffee after work. She had barely glanced at her phone when a notification popped up. A friend’s message: “Did you hear? Daniel got engaged.” Her fingers froze. She blinked at the screen, thinking it was a joke, a cruel mistake. She opened the message again. “He’s proposing to someone at his office. Not you.” Sophie’s chest tightened painfully. Her mind refused to process the words. Not him. Not Daniel. Not the man she had trusted more than anyone else in her life. She dropped her phone onto the table and bolted from the café, ignoring the stares of the few patrons left. Her heels clacked against the pavement as the cold evening air hit her face, but she didn’t care. When she arrived at Daniel’s apartment building, she found herself hesitating at the entrance. She didn’t want to see it, didn’t want to face him, didn’t want to believe it. But her curiosity, the same curiosity that had always betrayed her before, pushed her forward. She stepped into the lobby just in time to see him coming down the stairs, smiling, a small box in his hand. And there she saw her again—the woman he was going to marry. Young, polished, clearly someone from his world, someone she could never compete with. Sophie’s throat tightened. She wanted to scream. She wanted to throw the box at him. She wanted to run. But she froze. Daniel looked up and noticed her. His smile faltered. “Sophie…” She shook her head violently. “No. Don’t.” He stepped closer. “I didn’t—” “Don’t lie to me!” Sophie yelled. “You promised me! You said I was the one, Daniel! You said we had a future together!” Daniel’s face softened, almost pleading. “Sophie, we had something real—” “Real?” she spat the word. “You chose her. You didn’t even wait for me. We were together for two years, Daniel! And you just… left me!” The sound of her own voice made her heart ache even more. Daniel’s eyes fell, and for a moment, she thought he might say something to make it right. But he didn’t. Instead, he took a step back. “Sophie, I—” “No! Don’t explain. Don’t even try. I don’t want your words.” Her voice was cracking now, tears slipping down her cheeks. The world felt like it had turned upside down, like the ground had fallen beneath her feet. Sophie turned and ran again, faster than she had ever run before, ignoring the cold wind, ignoring the stares of pedestrians. She reached her apartment and slammed the door behind her, trembling, exhausted, heartbroken. For days, Sophie couldn’t eat properly, couldn’t sleep properly. She felt numb and hollowed out. Every time she thought about Daniel, about the life she had imagined with him, about the promises he had made, she felt a sharp stab of betrayal. Her friends tried to console her, but words felt useless. “It’s not your fault,” they said. But Sophie felt like it was. She had believed. She had given her heart freely. She had trusted. And now she was left with nothing but disappointment. She began to question everything. Why did she always fall for men who didn’t want her? Why did she give her trust to people who only broke it? And slowly, Sophie Hayes made a decision. She would no longer chase love. She would no longer give herself fully to someone who might leave. She would focus on herself, on her career, on building a life where she didn’t need anyone to validate her worth. But deep down, in the quietest parts of her heart, a small, stubborn spark remained. A spark that refused to believe that love was impossible. Because even after two devastating betrayals, even after her heart had been broken more than she could bear, Sophie still dreamed of someone who would choose her, truly and completely.
