Chapter One: Broken Promises
Sophie Hayes ran down the street, her heels splashing through puddles left from the evening rain. She didn’t notice the cold, didn’t care that her hair was plastered to her face or that her coat was soaked. All she could think about was the text she had just received. “Sophie… we need to talk.” The words sat in her chest like a heavy stone. She already knew what it meant. She had known before she even opened the message. The small café on the corner of Elm Street came into view. She pushed the door open, the warm air wrapping around her like a brief promise of comfort. And then she saw him. Daniel. He was there, smiling at a woman she didn’t recognize. Her stomach twisted violently, and she froze in the doorway, unable to move, unable to speak. Daniel’s arm was around the woman’s waist, and the way she leaned into him—the casual intimacy—made Sophie feel sick. Her heart beat so loudly she was sure he could hear it. She wanted to turn, to run, to disappear, but her legs refused to obey. Daniel noticed her almost immediately. His smile faltered, just for a second, and she thought she saw guilt flash across his face. Then he turned back to the other woman, brushing a strand of her hair behind her ear, like Sophie didn’t even exist. It had been two years of him. Two years of shared laughter, whispered secrets in the dark, late-night phone calls, and promises of a future together. Two years of her believing she was the “one.” And now, in a single moment, it all shattered. Sophie swallowed hard. “Daniel,” she managed, her voice trembling. He looked up, finally noticing her fully. His expression shifted, a mixture of surprise and irritation. “Sophie… what are you doing here?” She could barely speak. “I… I heard…” Her throat tightened. “I heard about her.” He sighed and ran a hand through his hair, avoiding her gaze. “Sophie, it’s not what you think—” “Oh, it’s exactly what I think!” she snapped, louder than she intended. Heads turned, and she didn’t care. “You’re proposing to her. To another woman. And you’ve been lying to me for months!” Daniel’s eyes softened, but it wasn’t the way she wanted. It wasn’t guilt. “Sophie, listen—” “No! Don’t. Don’t you dare try to explain.” Sophie’s hands shook, and she gripped the edge of the counter. “I gave you everything. My trust. My heart. My life for two years, Daniel! And you just… threw it away!” He stepped closer, but she flinched, taking a step back. “Sophie, it’s complicated—” “Complicated? You call this complicated?!” she yelled. Tears threatened to spill, but she pressed her lips together, trying to stop them. Her voice cracked anyway. “You’re engaged to someone else! And you didn’t even have the decency to tell me! Did you even care about me at all?” Daniel’s shoulders slumped. “Of course I cared.” “Cared?” Sophie laughed bitterly, a sound that made her stomach ache. “You call this caring? Betraying me, lying to me, making me believe I was the only one you wanted? That’s not caring, Daniel. That’s selfishness. That’s cruelty.” For a moment, he said nothing, and Sophie’s chest tightened as the reality hit her again. Two years of her life, all gone. All the dreams she had clung to—the future she had imagined with him—crashed to the ground. “I… I have to go,” she whispered finally, her voice hoarse. She turned and fled from the café, her heels slapping against the wet pavement. She didn’t look back. By the time Sophie reached her apartment, her coat clung to her like a second skin. She slammed the door behind her and collapsed onto the couch, burying her face in her hands. The rain from outside had soaked through her hair and clothes, but it didn’t matter. Nothing mattered. She thought back to Ryan, her first boyfriend, the one who had taken her virginity and promised her the world. She had been nineteen then, naïve and certain that love was all-consuming and meant forever. He had whispered words of devotion in her ear, held her hand and told her she was special. And then, two weeks later, she had caught him with another girl in the hallway of her college dorm. He had looked at her, annoyed, and said coldly, “You were never my girlfriend, Sophie. You just believed you were.” She had cried for days after that. The betrayal had carved deep lines into her heart, lines she thought would never heal. And now, here she was again, betrayed by someone she thought loved her. Two men who had made promises and broken them. Two men who had convinced her she was enough… only to prove she wasn’t. Sophie curled into herself on the couch, shaking. She felt small. Weak. She hated feeling this way. She hated the tears, the pain, the disbelief that anyone could love her and not betray her. She whispered to herself, her voice trembling, “Maybe I’m not meant to be happy. Maybe I’m just… unlucky.” The next few days were a blur. Sophie avoided everyone. She stayed late at work, drowned herself in tasks, and refused calls from friends who wanted to check on her. Every corner, every street, every restaurant reminded her of Daniel. One evening, she sat on her balcony, staring at the city lights. She thought about all the men she had met since Ryan—the ones who seemed kind at first but disappeared as soon as she started caring. The men who flirted but never committed. The men who said the right things but meant nothing. Sophie let out a long, shuddering breath. “Why is this my life?” she whispered. “Why do I always fall for people who don’t stay?” She had grown cautious, yes, but not hardened. Deep down, she still believed in love. She still longed for someone who would choose her, who would see her worth, who would never leave her wondering if she was enough. But now, after Daniel, that hope felt distant. Almost impossible. Almost like a fairy tale meant for someone else. Days turned into weeks. Sophie buried herself in work and friends who could offer comfort but not love. She laughed sometimes, smiled when necessary, but at night, when the apartment was quiet, she felt the old ache in her chest. The ache of unchosen love. It wasn’t just heartbreak anymore. It was doubt. Doubt about herself, doubt about men, doubt about the idea that love could ever be real for someone like her. And yet… even in the pit of her despair, she couldn’t let go of the thought that somewhere, someone existed who could see her differently. Someone who wouldn’t hurt her. Someone who would stay. She shook her head at the foolishness of it. “It’s impossible,” she muttered. “It’s never going to happen.” But the city outside twinkled with lights, and Sophie didn’t notice that a part of her heart, stubborn and quiet, refused to give up entirely. Later that week, Sophie went to her favorite coffee shop to distract herself. She sat in the corner with her laptop, headphones on, trying to lose herself in work. Her mind wandered back to Daniel, to Ryan, to all the men who had left scars on her heart. A man walked in, tall, confident, with an air of authority that seemed to command the room without a word. He ordered a coffee and glanced around briefly before moving to sit near her. Sophie barely noticed. She was used to being invisible. He didn’t look her way at first, but something about his presence made her feel… small. Uncomfortable. Powerful men always had that effect on her. They reminded her of her own weaknesses, her own fear of being vulnerable. She tried to focus on her screen, typing furiously, ignoring the subtle hum of the café. And yet, the tension in the air suggested that her life was about to shift again—though she couldn’t know how, or who, or why. Somewhere deep inside, a quiet thought whispered: maybe heartbreak wasn’t the end. Maybe, just maybe, something different could be coming. Sophie didn’t know it yet, but the next man she would meet would not be like the others. This time, it wouldn’t be betrayal, lies, or casual heartbreak. This time, it might just be love—love that seemed too perfect to be true. And that was exactly what made Sophie Hayes… nervous.
