CHAPTER 1

Alpha Deigo, paced the room, burning with lividity as he tried to process the information Arindia, the high priestess had just relayed to him. He felt the room growing smaller, coming together with each turn from the wall. Frustrated, he kicked the stool on which his fruits and water for the noon was placed prior to the arrival of the high priestess. He had lost his appetite. Immediately, a servant hurried in at the clattering sound and proceeded to clean out the mess. Alpha Deigo sat, oblivious to the servant’s presence as he pressed his thumb and index finger against his temple. Was that a headache coming? Headaches were one of the major things he dealt with whenever he received disturbing news similar to the one he just heard. “Are you just going to sit there and fume, my Alpha?” Arindia asked, having watched him make a full display of how unnerving he found the news. “What else can I possibly do now?” he asked, his voice a little strained. “I just received the most shocking news of my life.” “You can ask questions,” Arindia suggested, hoping that he would say something, other than sit in solemn quietness. “I have a lot of questions, for sure,” he said with a nod. “A lot of ‘Whys’, ‘whats’, ‘hows’, but where do I begin?” Arindia exhaled heavily, understanding his frustration. Receiving a message from the mouthpiece of the Moon Goddess on a random morning about how you’re supposed to break a curse you didn’t even know of its existence, or die at thirty must be a very devastating one. Alpha Diego, the ruler of the Usharia Kingdom had been chosen by the Moon Goddess to sever a curse that had been placed on the kingdom because of the atrocious deed committed by his great-grandfather. He had impregnated his servants who were twin sisters forcefully, and went ahead to banish them from the kingdom when they informed them of their pregnancy. None of them made it out alive with their babies due to the painful labour they experienced because of the harsh condition they had to live under, uncared for. He took their pride and denied them and his offspring which they carried, accusing them of wanting to ruin his family and reputation with their outrageous allegations. On their death beds, they placed a curse on him and the kingdom, promising to torture the kingdom by their blood. Following the curse, calamities in forms of famine, incurable diseases, and untimely death befell the kingdom. Not even his grandfather nor father could find a lasting solution to the problems the kingdom was plagued with in the short period of their life. Now, it was all up to Alpha Diego. A responsibility he would gladly avoid if his life was not in the line, too. He was to get a virgin pregnant and nurture her till she bears him a son. Alpha Diego was convinced that this would be everything but easy because he would need the Moon Goddess’s approval before proceeding with the plan. The next day, Alpha Diego woke up earlier than his usual self, refusing to stay glued to the bed after waking up from a horrific nightmare he couldn’t quite place his hand on, he found himself wanting to take some time out of the quietness of the morning and think about the great task that was before him. He sat at his table, rocking his chair from side to side, thinking about what step to take to avoid making a mistake along the line. The rhythmic movement of the chair from side to side was soothing, spreading all through his tensed nerves and easing his anxiety. He found himself thinking clearly, his mind rid of the fog caused by tension. There and then, he decided against the initial strategy of sending out his servants into the Kingdom to help him scout a virgin who could bore him a son. At first, he thought the idea was wise, until it occurred to him that he could just put the word out, and have every virgin who deem themselves worthy enough to bear the son of the Alpha come forward and prove it. He sat there for longer, enjoying the tenderness his neck muscles felt from resting against his rocking chair. “Ah! Finally,” he said as the darkness began to ascend, with the little lights filtering through the blinds as a testament. Now was time to prepare for the day and begin preparations for the execution of his plans. He rose from the rocking chair and went ahead to perform his morning rituals. There were thousands of maidens in the land who would kill to bear him a son, but the virgin filter would make it a lot easier. While eating, the high priestess entered, just like she had done the day before. A look of dread was plastered across his face: a proof of the fear he had for whatever news she must have brought. “To what do I owe this pleasure, Arindia?” He managed, forcing a smile that ended up coming out like a wide grin. “I heard that you intend to put word out that you’re in need of a virgin maiden that would bear your son,” she said, “that’s a great approach, hence, the Moon Goddess has granted you the discernment to recognize her when you set your eyes on her.” Phew! That wasn’t as had as he anticipated. Such a joy. “Ohh,” he exclaimed. “Thank you, Arindia,” he said and looking up, he added “thank you, my goddess.” In the same fashion that she has arrived, Arindia rose and departed. Recognizing that as his cue, Alpha Diego brought his meal to a halt and proceeded to summon his servants who would go and spread the word around the Kingdom, starting from the nobel and recognized families. His heart once again received peace and calmness as the settling feeling of doing this with the Moon Goddess’s approval washed over him.
