Chapter 1
“Terminal 808, pull out those strings kids, we are heading home!” The flight attended screamed through the microphones. My name is Anna, and I’ve been away from New York longer than I can remember. Well, I know that’s shocking because there is supposedly no place as good as home. But, what happens when you’re running away from your past, and have not had a good conversation with your dada longer than you can remember? Well, let’s leave all that. Right now I’m getting my bags in a trolley at the airport. I just touched down at the airport after a 17 hours flight from Tanzania. It’s crazy. Really. The flight attendant is snappy, but I try not to lose my temper more than worse. Trust me, it does no good, and only makes things much worse. I actually give her a tip to show how benevolent I am, as I pulled my white winter Jacket closer to my body. I’m cold. “Thank you so much,” the brunette cried, suddenly in a good mood. I simply nodded as I wheeled my bags away. They were just too much. Ugh! I couldn’t imagine that I had bought so many things in Tanzania. Ok, to be honest, I was always on the road or air, so I had gotten so many souvenirs from so many places. “Miss, would you like to use my services?” A bald man queried for the popular red and yellow taxi. I know I could easily afford a Uber, but for some reason, I decided to go along with this. I nodded, and he helped me place the whole luggage at the back, and helped me into the small space. “Thank you.” I said calmly. “Welcome to New York,” he said with a laugh. I smiled tightly. He moved around the car, and we were on our way to the Pentagon. I have actually booked an apartment there before coming here. It was a gamble since I could see what I was getting, but Jace assured me that I wouldn’t have any cause for complaint. Jace is my boyfriend. I met in online 6 months ago, and we had connected. He was a good distraction from my past, and why I had left here the way I did. So, I welcomed him into my life. I took a deep breath. I had to call father. It was not right if he heard his daughter was home from strangers. It was actually the right thing to do I think. I pulled out my phone from the candy crush styled wallet I had gotten at a fleece market. It was still so breathtaking, and I liked it a lot. But, I didn’t like calling my dad now. But, I had to do it. I dialled his line, and disconnected it a total of ten times. My hands shook like it had a life of its own at all point. This wasn’t good. “We are here, madam,” the driver said easily. I swallowed hard. I guess this would have to wait. I jumped out of the vehicle, and then, helped the driver take out my things. I couldn’t just leave it all to him or… Sigh. The whole thing was quick, and soon, I was walking up the stairs, dragging my bags all the way. The caretaker, a middle-aged woman, who was devoted to Christ, thanks to the cross on her neck and the bible on her arm, helped me get settled in, while whining about how great Jake was. I smiled at her, as she left me alone. The whole apartment was two rooms. It was small, but I had been in worse all my life. I sighed as I walked deeper in the room. I will be staying here for some time till I got a good place. I could imagine the looks on my parents face when they find out I was living in this sort of a place. They might actually get a stroke. They had all the money to give the best apartment, but I chose this. Well, Jace did, but I encouraged it. Sighing, I took out my phone. This time, I didn’t run away from what was the right thing to do. I called my dad, and waited. He picked the call on the fourth ring. “Anna?” He asked in that rich baritone of his. “Dad,” I said simply. “Oh, my God!” He screamed. “Honey, your daughter is on the line. Get in here!” I sighed. This was always the issue. He never seemed to understand that I didn’t want a show. He was always so pushy and stubborn, ignoring my feelings and desires above me. “Are you there, sweetie?” He asked softly. I nodded. “Yes, I am.” “My child!” I could hear mother scream at the other end. “Please, I didn’t call you to catchup. I’m back in New York, and I thought I should inform you about it. I don’t want you to hear it from elsewhere and get upset.” I said tightly. I could imagine him frowning into the phone. “Ok, that’s nice. You should have informed me earlier, so I will get a car at the airport, and you will easily come to the house, and…” “Dad, there is no need for any of that, ok? I have to go now. Bye.” I grumbled, and disconnected the call. I stayed like that for close to fifteen minutes. Every part of my body was tout with emotions, but I didn’t let myself feel it. I just needed to move on. It was their fault that I was like this, and they had to accept me this way. I’m not sure I would be going back to that house, ever. I sighed once more, as I walked over to the boxes, and began the arduous task of unpacking my things. This small apartment was going to be my home soon. It just needed a few tweaking here and there. At that moment, my door bell rang, stalling my thoughts. Who could that be?
