Time stood still, and all I could do was stare at him. It was like a form of cruel joke had come to life in front of her. Scott was the CEO?
“Are you going to stare at me all day? Do you think that this your house?” Scott snapped at me, bringing my thoughts back to fore.
I swallowed hard in shock. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry, sir.”
I walked quickly to the desk, and pulled the chair back for me to seat, only for his hand to slam on the desk, making me jump.
“No proper etiquette. Well, I wouldn’t sit down if I were you. You have to stand through out this interview, Miss Jean,” he said stiffly.
I swallowed hard as I did what I was told. The knees hurt my legs, but I really could do nothing to make it better right now. All I had to do was listen to the questions, and bear his handsome face staring right at me.
“I’m so sorry, sir,” I mumbled.
He ignored me, and brought out a long note that he placed in front of him, while adjusting his glasses. I waited for him to start.
“I found the answers to the questions in the first round appalling. I had to see who was the girl who was so dull to have my attention.” Scott said in disdain.
I swallowed hard. I have never been called dull no matter how I flopped in class. Scott’s words was so brutal that it almost shattered all of my confidence. I wanted to ask him if I was so dull, then how come he had told them to bring me in, but I held my tongue.
Ok, I have some questions for you.”
In the next 25 minutes, he shot questions that were so intense to me. It wasn’t the normal questions for an interview, but it was meant to rattle me and make me flop. I did my best at every point.
Finally, he took off his glasses and looked hard at me.
“Do you have any phone with you?” He asked coldly.
“I do, but not for what you’re implying.”
He glared at me, as he leaned back on his leather chair. “Oh, what am I implying?”
I looked away from him. “I’m not one to cheat my way to the top, sir. I do my best in every situation.”
“Is that so?” He taunted.
I could hear the anger beneath his voice. It was so alive and full. I swallowed hard, wondering why had said anything, but if I hadn’t, I may not get the job.
“Yes, sir,” I managed, more unsure as I spoke.
He sat up at once, and then, placed both hands on the wooden table. “Alright, you will have to answer this one question. If you get it, then, you will get the job.”
I swallowed hard, as I nodded. Would he keep all his anger at bay, and give me the job? It seemed like something that was impossible at the moment, but I wasn’t so sure.
“As you say, sir.”
Scott wore his glasses once more, and in the calmest voice I had heard since he stepped into my voice again this morning, said. “Tell me if a meagre company is struggling to remain afloat in the market. Should Vladimir and Sons company revamp it or use dubious means to take its stock exchange knowing full well that it may cause an inflation in the market?”
I stared at Scott in confusion. This question was too difficult for me. I didn’t know what I should answer to it.
“I’m afraid. I don’t have the answer to that question.” I said quietly.
“You don’t?”
“Yes, sir.”
He barked out a laugh, suddenly making my blood run cold. I swallowed the hard pain I felt in my chest. This wasn’t the Scott I knew, he never laughed at me when I didn’t understand something. Never!
“I knew you were dumb, but I didn’t think it was this serious.”
I blinked back the pain in my heart. I wasn’t dumb, I had literally answered all the hard answers he had thrown my way as best as I could. What else could I have done?
“You know, you’re just a spoilt brat. I’m not so surprised that you actually know nothing. Did you think you would be employed in Vladimir and Sons company under my watch? Really? Come on! Jenny, we don’t have daft people here, but those who actually know what they are doing. I’m sure you probably bought your degree as you’ve done everything your whole life.” He snapped coldly.
I had no idea how I was still standing.
“Well, I don’t have time to entertain you any more. Kindly see yourself out the door,” he said simply like he was having coffee with me.
I kept staring at him, as the tears slowly slid down my cheeks.
“Jeez!” He cursed as he picked his cursive pen. “Are you deaf or something? Get the hell out of my office,” he screamed at me.
Something in me took flight at that moment, and I turned my back to him, and ran as fast as I could out the door, with tears streaming down my face. The rest of the candidates looked at me in shock, and I could hear them whispering about all that was going on, but it didn’t matter to me.
The supervisor tried to reach out to me, but I didn’t stop. I just couldn’t. I ran into the restroom, placed my documents on the slab, and lowered my face under the tap. I opened the tap, and water watched through my face, unlocking the tears I had tried to hold at bay.
“Oh, God! Oh, God!” I screamed repeatedly.
I had never been so humiliated in my whole life, and the funniest thing was that I couldn’t blame him for it. He had every right to hate me. But, it was so sad that I couldn’t make it better.
I felt a hand on my shoulders. I looked up at the glass, and I was stunned to note who it was.
