“Here, have it” The director, Roy Wilson, said coldly as he stretched his hands to hand over a small document to Aiden who got it from his boss, his face filled with confusion. However, the moment he opened it, his eyes widened in shock. A dismissal letter? “What have I done?” He whispered, his heart racing in shock. This had to be the most absurd thing he'd seen this year. All he's ever done was work diligently and the next thing he's rewarded with is this? “Get out of my company” Roy said furiously. However, Aiden hurriedly went on his knees. He couldn't afford to lose the job. “I didn't do anything wrong.” He said, his chest thumping so hard. If he got fired, where on earth did he want to start from? He didn't even have anything to start with! “I don't want to know. All I know is that you are not competent enough to work here. Get out!” The man roared in anger while Aiden hurriedly left his office, knowing fully well what his anger could cause him. However, the moment he left the office, he could see accusing fingers being pointed at him. “See the thief.” “Heard he forged the boss's signature just because he wanted to get a whopping amount out of the company's account!” “Even with everything, he still can't dress properly!” “I'm glad he's fired. Don't you see how much of a disgrace he is to this company?” Someone whispered again while Aiden's heart shook. He'd never for once stolen money! How could he be accused of something as worse as this just because he was the company's accountant? Was this happening because of the way he dressed? The fact that he had just a pair of shoes and ripped off blue shirt on faded jeans should not be a problem. He thought as he cleared his table feeling sad as he felt his heart being ripped apart. This was a company that he had dedicated his life for after several years of searching for a job and now that he finally had it, he was fired after six months. “The director claimed that it's all because he's an embarrassment to the company. In fact, we have lost several contracts and several opportunities all because of him also. Can't you see that he deserves to leave?” They said again. However, what Aiden did not know was that it was all because he had rejected Aiden's advances when he asked him out. But Aiden could not afford to be intimate with a gay just because he was in love with his girlfriend of five years. Now that he thought about it, his heart raced in fear. How would he tell the woman he loved that he lost his job already when this was how he funded her finances? Someone tapped him immediately and he was done clearing his table while he turned around with fear laced on his face. “We understand that you stole from the company and affected us but we forgive you. Now that you are fired, have this cash. You should look good and not let your poverty self radiate all over you, stinky pig!” His coworker said, his voice filled with sarcasm and threw a few bundles of hundred dollars cash and stepped back, stuffing his nose with a handkerchief while everyone laughed. Aiden could not bear being ashamed as he watched everyone jeered at him. Yet, they all could not do without him while he was still a worker. Carrying out his box, tears streamed his cheeks for the first time in many years. Now that he had no job, how on earth would he face his girlfriend and…. His thoughts halted when his phone rang. Bringing out the old Nokia buttoned phone, he stared at the screen for a while wondering who was calling. He knew that it could either be his landlord or girlfriend. Not knowing what else to believe, his heart shook with laced up fear as he picked up the call. “Hey,” The feminine voice said while Chris's heart was filled with a mixture of joy and sadness as he heard his woman's voice. “Hey, baby. I…” “I have to talk first!” She demanded harshly and continued, “I am not interested in you again.” Aiden froze in shock as the box he carried fell off while he stared into space in confusion. “We should talk about this” He said with breath quickened as he became further confused. They never had any issues. What then was the reason for the breakup? “There's nothing to talk about expect me wasting my time talking to a riff raff who has nothing to offer me” Hearing that from the woman he had solely loved caused Aiden to break down in tears feeling heartbroken. This was the time he needed to be with his woman while she confronted him. Now, she was breaking up with him when he needed her the most. Why was life so unfair to him? “Fiona, don't do this to me. I can't afford to lose you. I love you so much and I..” He was interrupted when she laughed shortly. “Ever since I have been with you, have you offered me money? Aside from that, you are not even the kind of man I can take out. you're broke, short, stupid and daft!” All of these words pierced Aiden's heart like a sword. However, he decided not to keep his cool. “But I give you all my allowances while you give me as you please” Aiden said, feeling heartbroken as he blinked the tears that threatened to stream his face. He was still yet to understand why she was breaking up with him. “You call five hundred dollars money? You can't afford to buy me the latest XYZ accessories. I can't afford to waste my youth while I suffer with an incompetent man” She said and hung up. “Fiona, I…” He stopped abruptly and dialed the number again, his heart filled with sadness. If it was all because of the XYZ accessories, he was willing to look for another job so far he did not lose her. However, the number he dialed was not reachable. After a while, Aiden realized that he had been blocked. Feeling so much heartbreak as he picked up his box and wandered towards the busy road, his mind pricked. He had nothing else to lose even if he lost his life now. To think that he ignored his own sickness just because he had a woman to take care of caused him to shed tears the more. He invested so much in the relationship that when she decided that they would not get intimate until they got married made him wait. “I invested in her and my job. Yet, they all left me. What's more?” He muttered as he kept wandering, not realizing that he had caused chaos on the busy road. However, it did not take him a minute before a moving truck driven by a drunk driver ran past him while his blood spluttered everywhere. Maybe this was the end of everything. At le ast, he would not get to be poor anymore. He thought as he drifted slowly to the other world.
