Daniel barely slept.
The surveillance footage played over and over in his mind. The silver bracelet. The hooded figure. The six missing minutes.
It wasn't enough to accuse Vanessa.
But it was enough to make him question everything he thought he knew.
By sunrise, he had made a decision.
He wasn't going to let Amelia fight this battle alone.
The next morning, Amelia answered a knock on her apartment door.
She wasn't expecting anyone.
When she opened it, Daniel stood there, holding two cups of coffee.
"You found my apartment?"
He gave a sheepish smile.
"Your employee file."
She folded her arms.
"That's slightly creepy."
"I'll accept that."
Despite herself, Amelia laughed.
"Come in."
Daniel stepped into the modest apartment. It was small but tidy, with books stacked neatly on shelves and framed family photographs on the walls.
One picture caught his attention.
A smiling couple stood beside a much younger Amelia.
"My parents," she said softly.
"They passed away three years ago."
"I'm sorry."
"They taught me that a person's character is worth more than their bank account."
Daniel looked around again.
"Now I know where your strength comes from."
She smiled sadly.
"And what about you?"
His expression changed.
"My father believed emotions made people weak."
Amelia frowned.
"Did you believe him?"
"For a long time."
He looked out the window.
"Until I met someone who kept proving me wrong."
Their eyes met.
The room fell silent.
Before either of them could say another word, Daniel's phone rang.
His expression hardened as he answered.
"What happened?"
A pause.
"I'm on my way."
He ended the call.
"What is it?" Amelia asked.
"The board of directors called an emergency meeting."
An hour later, the atmosphere inside Carter Holdings was tense.
The directors sat around the long conference table, their expressions grim.
At the head of the table sat Daniel.
His uncle, Richard Carter, spoke first.
"Our investors have seen the leaked documents."
"The media is asking questions."
"If this continues, the company could lose billions."
Another director leaned forward.
"The easiest solution is to blame the suspended employee."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"No."
Richard frowned.
"Why are you protecting her?"
"I'm protecting the truth."
Richard's eyes narrowed.
"You've known this woman for less than two weeks."
"And?"
"Family comes first."
Daniel looked directly at him.
"Integrity comes first."
The room fell silent.
Richard smiled—a slow, calculated smile.
"So you've finally become your father's son."
Daniel stood abruptly.
"I am nothing like my father."
Without another word, he walked out.
Amelia waited in the lobby.
The moment Daniel appeared, she knew something was wrong.
"They're blaming you," he admitted.
"I guessed."
"My uncle wants the investigation closed."
"So they can fire me."
"So they can protect the company's image."
She nodded quietly.
"I understand."
"No."
Daniel stepped closer.
"I won't let that happen."
She searched his face.
"Why?"
The question caught him off guard.
"Because you're innocent."
"That's not the real reason."
Daniel hesitated.
For years, he'd hidden every emotion behind carefully built walls.
But Amelia had a way of making those walls feel unnecessary.
"I care about you."
The words escaped before he could stop them.
Amelia's heart skipped.
Neither of them moved.
Neither of them spoke.
Then...
A loud clap echoed through the lobby.
They turned.
Vanessa stood near the entrance, smiling slowly.
"How touching."
She walked toward them, confidence radiating from every step.
"I warned you, Daniel."
Daniel's expression turned icy.
"What do you want?"
Vanessa stopped just a few feet away.
"The board has voted."
Daniel frowned.
"What vote?"
She held up an envelope.
"They've appointed an interim CEO."
His eyes widened.
"They can't do that."
"They just did."
She handed him the document.
"The vote was unanimous."
Daniel scanned the page.
His own uncle had led the motion.
He looked up.
"Who's replacing me?"
Vanessa smiled.
"My father."
The world seemed to stop.
Everything suddenly made sense.
The leaked files.
The planted evidence.
The pressure from the board.
It had never been about Amelia.
It was about taking Carter Holdings away from him.
Daniel looked at Vanessa with disbelief.
"You planned this."
"I planned for someone strong enough to run the company."
"You destroyed it to take it."
She stepped closer.
"I gave you every chance to marry me."
"You chose her."
She glanced at Amelia.
"So now..."
"...you can lose everything together."
Vanessa turned and walked away.
Daniel stood frozen, the envelope crumpling in his hand.
Amelia gently touched his arm.
"We'll fight this."
Daniel looked at her, the weight of betrayal heavy in his eyes.
For the first time in years, he wasn't fighting for a company.
He was fighting for the people he loved.
And he knew the battle had only just begun.
