Chapter One The Stranger in the Rain
Rain poured over the city in silver sheets, turning busy streets into rivers of light.
Amelia stood beneath the awning of a small bookstore, hugging a paper bag filled with secondhand novels. She smiled to herself. Books have always been kinder than people.
Her phone buzzed.
Homeowner: Final notice. Rent is due tomorrow.
She sighed.
Three jobs. Endless bills. Dreams that felt farther away each day.
Still, she smiled.
Because smiling was easier than explaining why she wanted to cry.
A sleek black car rolled to a stop in front of the bookstore.
The driver hurried out with an umbrella and opened the rear door.
A tall man stepped out.
His suit looked like it belonged on the cover of a magazine. His expression, however, belonged at a funeral.
He barely noticed the rain.
He walked straight into the bookstore.
Minutes later, raised voices echoed inside.
"I said I ordered a first edition," the man said calmly, though his calmness somehow felt more dangerous than shouting.
"The delivery was delayed, sir," the elderly shop owner replied nervously.
Amelia stepped inside.
"It wasn't their fault," she said softly. "The courier service has been delayed all week because of the flooding."
The man turned.
Dark eyes.
Sharp jaw.
A face that looked carved from marble.
For a brief second, neither of them spoke.
Then he asked, "Do you work here?"
"No."
"Then why are you defending them?"
"Because kindness costs nothing."
Something flickered across his face.
Surprise.
Maybe even guilt.
He glanced at the trembling old shop owner before quietly saying, "I'll wait."
The tension disappeared instantly.
The shop owner smiled with relief.
As Amelia left the store, she heard footsteps behind her.
"Excuse me."
She turned.
The stranger held out the book she had accidentally left on the counter.
"You forgot this."
She accepted it with a grateful smile.
"Thank you."
He looked at the title.
"Pride and Prejudice."
"You like happy endings?" he asked.
"I like endings where people choose each other."
For the first time, he smiled.
It wasn't a big smile.
Just enough to transform the sadness in his eyes into something almost hopeful.
"I'm Daniel Carter," he said.
"Amelia Hart."
Neither of them knew it then.
But somewhere beyond the rain, destiny had already begun writing the rest of their story.
