Catherine welcomed Eva to join her, “ Do you smoke? “ she asked her.
“ No thanks. “
“ That's a bummer. “ Catherine retorted.
As Eva took a seat, she double checked to see if Patrick was around, Catherine noticed her anxiety. “ Don't worry, he's asleep, its just me and you. “
Eva nodded satisfied, “ The gunshots... “
“ Don't worry about that either, it's all over now. “
“ did anyone get hurt? “
“ Eva, do you really care about those men? “ Catherine sat still observing Eva close.
“ Do you know who I am to think that I don't care? “
“ No, that's why I'm asking. “
“ They are human beings, of course they matter. “
Catherine rolled her eyes, disgusted by Eva's show of weakness, she searched for someone heartless. “ Well I presume you don't know what you're in for yet, if you do, those humans won't be a bother to you. “
“ He says that I will learn on my own, I don't know how he expects me to do that. “ Eva cried.
“ You're smart, I know you are. “ Catherine pushed for information, “ What do you think you are here? “
“ I am a kidnapped woman, I reckon the police are looking for me. “
Catherine was getting the information she wanted, “ So how long will you rule that possibility off? “
“ When I stay a long while and see no cops at the door. “ Eva answered.
“ Let me give you a hint, no one will come looking for you, we control the police. “
Eva shuddered in fear, “ Fine. “
“ Do you believe that I can help you for the journey up front? “ Catherine crossed her legs as he queried.
“ My job descriptions stationed that I be his wife, I don't think I need your help for that. “
Catherine hated the fact that Eva was becoming bold, she wanted her mellow so as to easily control her. “ You do, I am his mother. “
“ Fine ma'am, “ Eva didn't give a damn about the situation at hand, she was a fake wife afterall, there was no reason for her to feel threatened.
“ You are an arranged wife, but you know how to fulfil your duties that are needed. Have s*x with the man, It is part of the job. “ Catherine was referring to bed duties and Eva understood. Her heart skipped a beat as she recalled the brutal s****l experience that Patrick surprisingly showered her. Her legs parted at the remembrance of it. “ So you are aware that I'm a fake wife, your son told you? “ Eva was pursuing a deeper conversation.
Catherine sat up, “ Why wouldn't he? “
“ I would assume that if a man wanted a contracted fake wife, he would keep it a secret from his mother. I have a son that he contracted too. “
Catherine could verify that the woman was transfiguring into a smart person, maybe Patrick was right in the selection, Eva may turn out to be a fantastic functioner. Catherine was fishing for more proof to Eva's wisdom, the smartest way was to keep asking questions, “ So what do you percept is his plan, I know you believe that there is something more than meets the eye. I mean, what were the odds that a man like him needs a contracted wife and a kid. “
Eva shook at the mention of her kid, her heart winded, “ Maybe he's into drugs, I don't know… but I heard he's not into killing me at the end, I just have to be smart. So please, “ Eva was on the verge of crying, “ Tell me what to do and I will do it, allow a mother protect her son. “
“ That's all? Drugs? What about why he needs a fake wife and child? Think harder. “ Catherine pressed.
Eva had to think hard, “ He's into some illegal business and need a fake family to keep the face. I and my son are the unfortunate bid. “
Catherine beamed, “ Close enough. “
“ Ma'am, I need your help please. “ Eva pleaded from the bottom of her heart.
Catherine sat close, “ Fine, but you have to make a solemn swear not to ever disobey me or disrespect me. If you do I will abandon you. “
Eva raised both her hands in desperation, “ I promise I won't. “
“ Two things here, number one, you tell me whatever it is that Patrick tells you. He's my only son, and as such I must know everything he does to protect him. I know that considers himself a lone man, who doesn't need anyone. “
“ Okay, “ Eva followed attentively.
“ And the second one, you must never tell him that you told me. Whatever we talk about must be between us for life, including this conversation. “
Eva was thrown off balance, “ That means I have to keep secrets from me. “
“ That is what it means. Now, do you need my help or not? “
Eva didn't think much about the deal with Catherine, she figured all she had to do was to report conversations to Catherine without telling Patrick. Afterall, she was his mother. And there was the lingering fact that she was guaranteeing her child's safety at the end of the deal. Eva wanted to be careful and not get too involved in the family's matter, she did overhear the conversation between Patrick and Catherine about the family separation and lack of love, Eva choose to turn a deaf ear to what she heard for her own good.
“ I will do it. “ Eva said at the end.
( CATHERINE'S POV )
Catherine smiled, wholesomely satisfied as she watched Eva retreat back into her room. That was the first function from her son's contract wife, and it was in her favour.
*****************
The following morning, Eva had woken up very early at about 4:15 am. She had minimal time to sleep because of the strain of her thoughts. Eva needed fresh air and sought to go outside to get it. At that time of the hour, the pool and the leaves would invite breeze in. She checked on her son to make sure he was fast asleep before leaving the room. Eva was out, and the moment she stepped outside, the wind visited her. Her full hair danced to the tune of the air, as it reached the root of her hair, she was glad. She sat on the pavement close to the pool but didn't place her legs inside, she didn't want to invite too much cold. Eva folded her arms and began to ponder, to cogitate. Her thoughts didn't stray far before she felt a cold ceramic tough her shoulder. When she turned, she saw Patrick handing her a glass of wine.
She was surprised to see him.
“ You’re awake. “ He sat next to her and placed his legs inside the water.
“ You’re seating next to me, “
Patrick chuckled softly, “ You are my wife, let's act like it. “
“ You must be a great actor then, you're doing the job better than me. “
“ When you live in the industry frame, you have polarity. “ Patrick replied.
Eva was inquisitive to know more, “ What does that mean? “
He gestured to her to finish her cup of wine, “ Did i not tell you? I'm letting you percept for yourself. You'll have to figure this out alone. “
Eva's anxiety rose, “ Fi… fine. “ She downed her entire glass of wine.
Patrick turned to her completely and took her neck, “ Now wife, let us continue from where we stopped before my mother brutally interrupted us. “
