I was the sole heiress to Vance Conglomerate. Julian knew me as the woman who shared his leaky apartment, lived on old takeout, paid the bills, and wrote the core code for his company after midnight. For three years, I let him take the public credit. Then Serena arrived as an intern, and within a month, she had my project, my desk, and Julian's trust. At our anniversary dinner, he lifted the master keycard engraved with our vows and offered it to her. The company I had built for him was about to learn who actually owned its foundation.

Chapter 1 The Master Keycard
The doctor's report pressed against my palm through the lining of my purse. *Cardiac arrhythmia.* The diagnosis gave a name to the price of three years without sleep. Beside it sat the patent certificate for ‘Nexus’, the core algorithm I had poured my life into. I had planned to give Julian both on our anniversary. The report would force us to slow down. The patent was supposed to carry us into the future we had promised each other. I opened the door to the celebration dinner and heard my fiancé announce another woman's name. Julian stood on the small stage, smiling over a raised glass. He looked every inch the founder the press believed him to be. “And the final piece of our success, the leadership of the Nexus project, will now be officially handed over to our most promising talent, Serena Blake!” Serena had joined the company a single month ago. I had built Nexus over three years in our leaky apartment. Everyone applauded. I barely heard them. Julian held up the Master Keycard. It was the only card in the company with total system access. Then he stepped down and placed its silver chain around Serena's neck. She touched the card, turning it over beneath the lights. *J & C / First Build / Year One.* The engraving took me back to our cramped kitchen after the first successful simulation. Julian had been too tired to stand straight, and his eyes were wet. “This card, Chloe, is the key to everything we're building. It will always belong to you.” Now it hung against Serena's dress. Julian followed my gaze and came over. “Can you not do this tonight, Chloe? Your jealousy is suffocating.” He pulled a flimsy silk scarf from his pocket and pushed it into my hand. “Happy anniversary.” It was the free gift packaged with Serena's designer gown. He bent close enough that no one else could hear. “Serena is having trouble with the latest debug. Go help her fix it. Don't ruin my night.” Pain cinched around my chest, sharp enough to catch my breath. The doctor's report was still in my purse, waiting for a man who had just ordered me to repair his gift to someone else. I reached for the cheap silver engagement ring on my finger. It had been all Julian could afford when he proposed. I had worn it through every late-night build and every investor rejection, treating it as more valuable than anything my family owned. The ring landed in a trash can among champagne corks and used napkins. Julian stared at the ring among the corks. Shock crossed his face, followed at once by anger. I walked out before he could grab my arm, leaving him to stare after me. Inside the waiting taxi, I called a number I had avoided for three years. “Dad. It's me. Cut off all of Thorne Tech's secret credit lines.” He was quiet on the other end. “All of them.”
