Chapter1
-Micah- My heart gave a sudden beat when the arrow passed me, breathing loud, beads of sweat running from my forehead due to the constant running, brows furrowed from irritation as I still could not escape him. I cursed silently, how was it possible? I had put in so much effort into escaping, but he was teasing me, mocking me, taunting me… "Lucky escape, boy, but you can't hide from me," his taunting voice came from behind me, making me stumble. I gritted my teeth as the sharp rock slid across my knee, leaving a deep cut across it. Lifting my head, I gazed in the direction of my perceived enemy. I snapped my head forward, squinting my eyes, glancing through the forest for a temporary hiding place to catch my breath and attend to my wound. I needed to get out of sight, but my mind was completely clogged, that arrow came way too close to me, his voice still rang in my ears, he was hot on my heels. Noticing a moss-covered tree stump nearby, I took the opportunity and sprinted towards it. Jumping behind it, frowning and scowling myself while I took deep breaths to control the burn in my chest from the excessive running. My eyebrows scrunched together, noticing a warmth running down my leg. Dammit… I shook my head as I ripped a piece of my shirt, wrapping it as tightly as I could over the cut to stop the bleeding. My eyes squeezed shut as I winced from the burn radiating from it, beads of sweat running down my face, but I did not dare make a sound. Scanning the forest, not focusing on anything particular. A broad smile lit up my face as an idea entered my mind. Knowing I would be punished for making such a bold decision, I decided to do it anyway. I needed to get to safety and this was the only way I could see it happening. I lifted myself and ran deeper into the forest. My face winced with every movement as the pain shot through my knee, but I would not give in, I needed to escape. Once I believed I was deep enough into the forest, I felt my body relax, my heart still pounding wildly as if it was going to jump out of my chest. I need to get out of sight, somewhere high where he will possibly not expect me to be. Sitting against a tree, I focused on my surrounding area, looking for options to hide. My eyes glistened as I inspected the tree from a distance. The branches seemed a bit high, but I was determined to make this work. Tilting my head sideways, I inspected the tree thinking of different possibilities to get to the top. Excitement took over as I figured out how to reach the first branch. I am actually going to do this. Staring back to the area I came from, hoping I had a bit more time. I ran circles around quite a few trees, close enough to make him an easy target but far enough to make sure he took his time before figuring out my plan. Taking a bit more time, I cleared my steps leading to the tree in mind. As I reached my destination, I moved behind it, an enormous grin formed on my face. I peeked around the tree making sure I was satisfied with the covering. I nodded my head at my hard work. Now I just needed to get up into the tree… Gazing up, I pulled my dagger and slammed it into the tree. Disappointed, I stared the tree down with a quizzical look. Retrieving the dagger, I lifted my chin and put in every ounce of power into slamming it back into the tree. Frustration crawled upon me as I failed once more. I needed to get it in deeper. I removed the dagger again, placing my one leg back for more support, I slammed the dagger harder into the stump. My eyes squinted, studying this situation with frustration. I needed it sturdy enough to climb. “Boy, your footwork is sloppy, you are done when I get hold of you.” I rolled my eyes with his sarcastic comment, ‘Sloppy my ass,’ I thought to myself as the side of my lip curled up. Dammit, Micah focus, I tell myself. I shook my head, to refocus on my task at hand, a slow smile creeping onto my lips as I spotted a rock and grabbed it, hammering the dagger into the tree. My eyebrows lifted, amused at my work. I stepped onto the dagger and reached for the branch. Disappointingly, it was still slightly high. “It’s a matter of time, Boy, your footwork is a complete disaster. Whoever trained you should rather give up, you lack skill,” he said, in a mocking voice. I stared the branch down with half-lidded eyes. I had only one shot at this. Bending my knees, I slightly winced at the pain shooting from my injured knee. I jumped as high as possible, feeling the dagger pushing downward to the ground… with wide eyes and a toothy smile, my fingertips clutched around the branch. Pulling myself upwards, I sat on the branch gloating at my accomplishment… “Well, well, it seems like my prey had a plan up his sleeve after all…” My eyes bulged at the closeness of his voice and I had to take action immediately. Scanning the branches above me, I started climbing. Moving higher into the tree until I found a thick, sturdy branch, perfect for steadying myself. Grabbing my bow and arrow, I focused on the one spot I chose to take my shot. I knew he would find the clearing area. My eyes squinted. I bit my bottom lip, concentrated on any movements. He was so close to the area. Any second now…, he bent down to the exact spot I cleared. "So my target does have a weakness," I watched him as he inspected the clearing area and lifted his head towards my trail, a sly smile on his face, as he moved slowly towards my tree with careful sidesteps. I pulled my arrow backward on the bowstring and focused, but then it dawned on me. He was under the impression I was hiding behind the tree. I almost laughed, causing some leaves to stir. Dammit, I scowled at myself as I saw it caught his immediate attention and I released the arrow…watching it as it glided straight down towards him…
