Chapter (3) The Morning After.

834 Words
The first rays of sunlight slipped through the curtains, but Amara hadn’t slept. She sat by the window, still wearing the same clothes from the night before. Every word Damian had spoken echoed in her mind. “I never break my promises.” She didn’t know whether those words should comfort her… or terrify her. A soft knock came at the door. Before she could answer, it opened. A middle-aged woman in a neat black uniform stepped inside, followed by two maids carrying elegant garment bags. “Good morning, Miss Amara,” the woman said politely. “Mr. Damian has asked us to prepare you for today’s engagement ceremony.” Amara frowned. “I never agreed to any engagement.” The woman smiled gently. “Mr. Damian is a man who always gets what he wants.” Her heart tightened. The maids placed the garment bags on the bed and unzipped them. Inside were breathtaking designer dresses, sparkling heels, and a jewelry case filled with diamonds that shimmered under the morning light. Amara stepped back in shock. “I can’t accept these.” “The orders came directly from Mr. Damian,” the housekeeper replied. “He said you deserve only the best.” Amara swallowed hard. She had spent years worrying about rent, counting every naira before buying groceries. Now someone was placing diamonds in front of her as if they were ordinary accessories. Nothing about this felt real. Just then, her phone buzzed. Amara glanced at the screen, and her heart skipped a beat. It was her ex-boyfriend. For a long moment, she stared at the screen before finally answering. “Amara…” His voice was filled with regret. “Please meet me one last time. There are things you don’t know.” Before she could respond, another voice came through the line. Cold. Calm. Dangerously familiar. “I warned you to stay away from her.” Damian. Amara froze. How… had he gotten on the call? Silence filled the room. Then Damian spoke again. “If you truly care about Amara, disappear from her life.” The line went dead. Amara slowly lowered the phone, her heart pounding violently. Who exactly was Damian? And how could he know everything she was doing? Amara’s hands trembled as she clutched the phone against her chest. Nothing made sense anymore. She had met Damian only yesterday, yet it felt as though he had been watching every step of her life for years. Who was he? How did he know when people called her? How could he speak with such confidence, as if her future already belonged to him? The housekeeper cleared her throat softly. “Miss Amara, your breakfast is ready.” “I… I’m not hungry.” “I’m afraid Mr. Damian expected you to say that.” Amara looked up. “He instructed us not to leave until you had something to eat.” She couldn’t believe it. Did the man control everything? Reluctantly, she followed the housekeeper downstairs. The dining room looked like something from a royal palace. A long table was covered with freshly baked bread, fruit, pancakes, eggs, tea, and dishes she had never tasted before. Amara hesitated before taking a seat. Moments later, Damian walked in. He looked effortlessly handsome in a tailored black suit, his wristwatch gleaming beneath the morning light. Without saying a word, he sat opposite her. The room fell silent. The servants quietly excused themselves, leaving the two of them alone. Damian picked up a cup of coffee. “You should eat.” Amara folded her arms. “I have questions.” “I know.” “Then answer them.” He met her gaze calmly. “Not yet.” Her frustration grew. “You expect me to trust a man who refuses to tell me anything?” “I expect you to trust the fact that I’ve never lied to you.” She laughed bitterly. “That’s funny, because I don’t even know who you are.” For the first time, Damian’s expression softened. “My name is Damian Blackwood.” “I know your name.” “No,” he replied quietly. “You know my name. You don’t know my story.” Before Amara could speak again, a loud scream echoed from outside. The front doors burst open. A frightened security guard rushed into the dining room. “Mr. Damian!” Everyone turned. The guard was breathing heavily. “Someone has broken through the front gate… and they’re demanding to see Miss Amara.” Damian slowly rose to his feet. His face became cold. “Who is it?” The guard swallowed nervously. “He refuses to leave… and he says he’ll expose your biggest secret if you don’t let him in.” A heavy silence filled the room. Damian’s jaw tightened. For the first time since Amara had met him… He looked genuinely worried. Amara stared at him in shock. What secret could make the powerful Damian lose his composure
