Sara sat between Megan’s mom and Adam. Megan’s mom, Leigh, was kind and complimentary, but Sara could tell she put Megan on edge.
“This is delicious,” Leigh said. “You did a great job with lunch today.”
“Adam made most of it,” Megan said quietly.
Leigh’s mouth pinched, her displeasure clear. “Oh. Well, thank you, Adam.”
“Adam’s an amazing cook,” Sara said. “He brings in food for us at lunch all the time.”
“Are you two dating?” Leigh asked.
Sara and Adam both shook their heads. “No,” Sara said. “We’re just coworkers and friends.”
“You two are close to the same age. I’m surprised you haven’t dated,” Leigh said.
Sara shook her head. “I’m seeing someone else.”
“I see. What about you, Adam? Are you seeing someone?”
Adam shook his head. “No.”
“How old are you?”
“Mom!” Megan yelled.
