Leo watched Sara out of the corner of his eye. She stared out at the lake, lost in her own thoughts. Leo wanted to ask her about Peter, or ask her to stay, or say something that would make her feel better, but he kept his mouth shut.
Sara didn’t open up often, but when she did, Leo liked to listen to her. She’d done things he’d only dreamed of doing. The idea of leaving Bereton behind permanently scared him, but to go on a trip, to explore the country and the world, appealed to him. Being one of the youngest, he never had an opportunity for that. He had to jump into work quickly, barely taking a vacation.
“Have you thought about where you’re going next?” Leo asked. If he couldn’t take his own trip, he could live vicariously through Sara.
