Chapter 001
Selene Verlice walked out of the black car and rained on the big windows of the Verlice mansion. The cold wind struck her face immediately and she clutched her coat more tightly around her. Noctaire City was darker than she recalled. The mansion was perched on the hill like a dead king watching over the city. Nothing looked welcoming. She was startled by the loud, loud metallic noise of the tall iron gates that closed behind her. There were guards around the property with rifles. A few were wearing blood stains on their sleeve. She wasn't greeted correctly by anyone. Nobody smiled. Even the servants did not look at him. Slowly, Selene walked through the huge entrance hall making the noise of her heels clicking on the marble floor. The house was full of the smell of smoke and old wine along with a metallic taste that she couldn't quite identify. Blood. She was suddenly filled with a sense of unease that settled on her. It was seven years she had been at boarding school. Dorian Verlice is her father, and she is away from him for seven years. Seven years, living as if she doesn't belong to one of the most feared mafia families in Noctaire. She was now back, however. There was something that was seriously amiss. There were two servants and they whispered near the staircase. “They looted another warehouse last night….” “Three men dead…” “Don't talk to loud for the boss!…” Selene stopped walking. Warehouse? Dead men? Her chest tightened. Heavy footsteps could be heard before she could ask a question. At the top of the staircase was her father. Dorian Verlice seemed older than she remembered. His dark suit was perfectly suited to his body, but his tired and worn face could not be concealed behind a high priced suit. Now there was a scar that crossed his side of his neck. He glared at her, speaking no words. Then he spoke. “Don't come back, you shouldn't come back.” Selene frowned. You said you told me to come home. “This city is no longer safe, I tell you.” He sounded coarsely. Angry. Nervous. It was that which terrified her most. There was nothing Dorian Verlice feared. At least he didn't until recently. Selene walked closer. “What’s happening here?” “Don't be afraid of anything.” “That’s a lie.” His jaw tightened. She wondered for a moment if he was going to scream at her. Rather, he sighed deeply and rubbed his forehead. “Some are trying to break up this family.” “Who?” “Why do you ask so many questions?” Selene crossed her arms. “And you're being too secretive.” There was a strange hush in the room. Then suddenly— A gunshot rang out loud outside. Selene gasped. The guards quickly ran to the doors. Dorian firmly gripped her arm. “From this day on, you will never leave this mansion without me.” “What?” Not one step outside those gates! “No way can I be locked up here?” I can do it… and I will if I must. He was very angry. Or fear. He then walked away with the guards, leaving her standing there confused and shaken, before she could argue again. The whole mansion was a bit of a mess. A terrible thing seemed to be lurking behind the walls. Main Event After a few hours, Selene was alone in her old bedroom. Nothing had changed. The same silver mirror -- The same giant bed. The same moon shaped chandelier above her head. The room was no longer safe, though. She went to the window and peeked out. The gardens below were drenched with rain. Everyone was guarded by armed men. Spotlights illuminated the gloomy forest that encircled the mansion. What was so dangerous that they had to shield themselves like that? Selene picked up her phone and attempted to text her friend Liora. No signal. Perfect. She threw the phone down at the bed with frustration. There was a gentle tap on the door. A servant came in, bringing tea, for he was a more aged servant. She knew her from a distance, Selene knew her immediately. “Maeve?” The woman's face faintly brightened with her weak smile. “Miss Selene, you've come a long way. Selene quickly hugged her. Maeve was raised almost as her own before going away to school. Even the look of fear was on Maeve's face now. There were dark circles under her eyes. She trembled with excitement as she put down her tea. “What’s happening here?” Selene asked softly. Maeve froze. After that, she stealthily closed the door to the bedroom. Just that alone made Selene's stomach twist. Maeve whispered. “People are disappearing.” Selene blinked. “What?” “Men of your father's organization, guards, drivers, servants.” “What do you mean that it went away?” “During the night they disappear.” Selene took a look at her. “That’s impossible.” Maeve was almost on the verge of tears. “They leave behind messages.” A cold chill ran down Selene’s spine. What sorts of messages? Maeve hesitated. Then whispered— The Crimson family would be burnt. For one second, Selene's heart went still. Crimson family. The secret mafia name of the family was that. That was something that nobody outside of the criminal world knew. Suddenly— BANG! There was a loud bang on the window of the bedroom. Selene yelped and recoiled. Maeve fell the tray. The glass of tea splintered on the floor. They both stared toward the glass. Nothing. Just rain. Selene gingerly moved towards the window. She began to take irregular breaths. “It's probably a bird…,” she whispered in a nervous tone. But deep down— She knew that it wasn't. Maeve caught hold of her wrist. Close the curtains at night.” “Why?” Maeve looked terrified. “For they look out of the windows.” A nervous laugh was forced out of Selene. “You’re scaring me.” “Scare is what you should be feeling.” So, Maeve ran out of the room. Leaving Selene alone. Completely alone. Hours passed slowly. The mansion went still. Too silent. Selene attempted to sleep, but her thoughts would not allow it. She jumped when she heard any little sound. The ticking clock. The thunder outside. The creaking floorboards. Then around midnight— Scratch… Selene’s eyes snapped open. She sat up slowly. Scratch… The sound repeated itself. Through the window she could see him. Her throat became dry as a bone in no time at all. Tree branches. It must have been tree branches. Nothing else. Slowly got out of bed and walked towards the curtains. Scratch… Closer this time. Her fingers were shaking as she opened the curtains. Nothing stood outside. It's nothing but darkness and rain. Selene let out a shaky breath. “You're going stir crazy…” Then, a flash of lightning appeared in the sky. And for a terrible nanosecond— She could see a person standing in the garden below. Watching her. A tall black-clad man. Selene backed away in terror. The lights suddenly went out. It was pitch-dark in the room. Climax Selene froze. The mansion generators should have been activated in no time at all. But they didn’t. The room remained in darkness. Then— The sound of heavy footsteps could be heard inside her bedroom. Not outside. Inside. Selene's breathing became sharp. “Who’s there?” No answer. Another step. Closer. Her heart leveled against her chest with a painful thump. She stretched towards the bedside table for something to fight with. Nothing. Then suddenly— Someone behind her put their hand to their mouth. Selene screeched at the palm. Other hand grabbed her waist violently. Cold knife pressed to her throat. “Don’t move.” The voice was low in pitch. Dangerous. Male. Selene shook with fear, her whole body trembling in terror. Tears instantly filled her eyes. The man dressed in a mask pulled her into the night. “Now you Verlice folk are done, you've all got nowhere left to skulk.” Selene struggled hard. The knife was pressed into her skin. There was pain in her throat. “You are just like your father,” the stranger whispered close to her ear. “So rotten they're rotten on the inside.” Suddenly gunshots rang out from down below. BANG! BANG! BANG! Men were yelling in the mansion. Selene’s eyes widened. The assault was taking place as they were speaking! Inside the house. The mask man squeezed his fist. “Tonight your family will be punished for their sins.” He lifted the knife up. Selene shut her eyes tightly. This was it. She was going to die. Then— CRASH! Glass exploded everywhere. A huge figure rushed through the window of the bedroom as if it were a wild beast. The masked attacker did not get a chance to react before the stranger violently attacked him. The two men hit the ground. Selene backed away, coughing and crying. There was a lot of confusion. Punches. Growls. Blood. The new stranger walked as if he were not a man. Fast. Brutal. Deadly. The lights of a thunderstorm danced in the room once again. At last Selene was able to see him. Darkness, with an amber light in his eyes. Eyes not much like human. Then the masked man pulled out a g*n and held it right to Selene's chest. But the foreigner with his eyes of amber turned to her first and shouted— “GET DOWN!” The g*n fired. And blood was splattered on the walls of the bedroom. Who got shot? Selene I knew when I came home, the emptiness inside me would be filled. But instead I walked right into a nightmare, and somehow, the monster who broke through my window didn't terrify me nearly as much as the people in this house.
