Exiled by blood

The pain of rejection did not fade.It worsened. Every breath felt like dragging broken glass through Lyra Vale’s lungs as she lay trembling on the cold stone floor of the Shadow Ridge courtyard. The mate bond that had existed for only a few fleeting moments had been torn apart with brutal force, leaving a hollow ache in her chest so sharp she could barely think. Around her, the whispers grew louder. Crueler. “She actually thought the Alpha King would accept her.” “How humiliating.” “An omega dreaming above her station.” The laughter cut deeper than the rejection itself. Tears blurred Lyra’s vision, but she refused to let them see her break completely. Not here. Not in front of them. Strong arms wrapped around her shoulders as Elias Vale pulled her gently upright. “Come,” he said, his voice low and strained. “We’re leaving.” Lyra could barely stand, but her father supported her weight as they pushed through the crowd. No one moved to help. No one offered sympathy. The wolves of Shadow Ridge simply stared as if watching a spectacle they would laugh about for years. At the far end of the courtyard, Kael Draven stood beside the royal guards, his expression unreadable. For one reckless second, Lyra looked at him. Hoped.Maybe regret would be there. Maybe guilt. There was nothing. His silver eyes passed over her as though she were invisible. That hurt more than the rejection. The moment she crossed the gates of the pack hall, the tears finally came. The cold night air bit against her skin as she stumbled down the moonlit path toward the small cottage she shared with her father at the edge of the territory. Neither of them spoke. The silence between them was heavy with humiliation. When they reached home, Elias shut the door firmly behind them and immediately drew the curtains. Only then did he turn to her. His usually calm face was dark with fury. “That bastard,” he hissed. Lyra had never heard such venom in his voice before. She sank onto the edge of the worn sofa, clutching her chest as another wave of pain hit. “Why?” she whispered. Elias knelt before her, his eyes softening. “Because Kael Draven is a fool blinded by pride.” “No.” Her voice cracked. “Why would the Moon Goddess pair us at all?” That question had been clawing at her ever since the rejection. It made no sense. She was nobody. An outcast omega with no status, no power, no wolf worth mentioning. And Kael was the Alpha King. The strongest wolf alive. Elias hesitated. For the briefest moment, something flickered across his face. Fear. “Some truths,” he said carefully, “are hidden for a reason.” Lyra frowned. “What does that mean?” Before he could answer, a deafening howl split the night. Elias froze. Then another followed. And another. Pack alarms. Lyra’s blood ran cold. “What’s happening?” Elias shot to his feet and moved toward the window, carefully pulling back the curtain. His face paled instantly. “They found us.” “Who?” He turned sharply. “Listen to me, Lyra. You must leave. Now.” Panic rose in her throat. “What are you talking about?” “There’s no time to explain.” A violent crash shook the front door.Someone was trying to break in.Lyra stumbled backward. “Father" Elias grabbed her shoulders, his grip urgent. “There’s something hidden beneath the floorboards in my room. A leather satchel. Take it and run into the Blackwood Forest. Do not stop. Do not trust anyone.” His words came so fast they barely made sense. “Why?” Another crash. The wood splintered. Elias’s eyes shone with desperate intensity. “Because everything they believe about you is a lie.” The door burst open. Four armed wolves stormed inside. At their front stood Alpha Rowan Blackthorn of Shadow Ridge, his face twisted with fury. Behind him, warriors flooded into the cottage. Lyra’s stomach dropped. “Alpha Rowan?” Rowan’s gaze locked onto her with open hatred. “Seize the girl.” Elias stepped in front of her instantly. “What is the meaning of this?” Rowan’s lip curled. “You dare ask that after what your daughter has done?” Confusion slammed into Lyra. “What are you talking about?” One of the warriors stepped forward carrying something wrapped in bloodstained cloth. When he dropped it to the floor, Lyra’s scream tore through the room.It was a severed wolf’s head. The face was unmistakable. Beta Marcus. Shadow Ridge’s second-in-command. Lyra staggered back, horror flooding her veins. “No…” Rowan’s voice thundered. “Beta Marcus was found murdered in the eastern woods less than an hour ago. Witnesses saw your daughter fleeing the scene.” “That’s impossible!” Lyra cried. “I was here!” “Lies.” Elias’s body tensed.“My daughter would never" “She was rejected by the Alpha King tonight,” Rowan snapped. “Humiliated before the entire pack. Motive enough for madness.” Lyra’s breath hitched. This was insane. A setup. It had to be. Rowan raised his hand. “By pack law, Lyra Vale is charged with murder and treason against Shadow Ridge.” “No!” Elias roared. The cottage exploded into chaos. He shifted instantly. His wolf burst through his human form in a blur of gray fur and snapping jaws. Lyra gasped. She had not seen her father shift in years. He lunged at the nearest warrior, sending him crashing into the wall. “RUN!” Elias roared through the mind-link. Lyra’s body moved on instinct. She sprinted toward his bedroom as snarls and screams erupted behind her.The floorboards. The satchel. Her trembling hands ripped up the loose plank beside his bed. There it was. An old leather bag. She snatched it just as another crash sounded behind her. A warrior had spotted her. “Stop!” Lyra bolted through the back window, glass shattering around her as she threw herself into the freezing night. Branches tore at her skin as she ran blindly into Blackwood Forest. Behind her came howls. They were chasing her. Her lungs burned. The mate rejection pain still pulsed through her chest, making every step agony. Yet terror pushed her forward. She could still hear the sounds of battle back at the cottage. Her father was fighting alone. Then a final, terrible howl echoed through the forest. One she recognized instantly. Elias. It ended abruptly. The world seemed to stop. Lyra stumbled. “No…” A crushing certainty hit her. He was gone. A strangled sob escaped her throat, but she forced herself to keep moving. Run. That was what he told her to do.She ran deeper into the forest than she ever had before, until the trees grew twisted and ancient, their branches blotting out the moonlight. Finally, her legs gave out. She collapsed beside a massive black oak, shaking violently. The satchel was still clutched in her hands. Through tears, she opened it. Inside were three things: A silver dagger etched with unfamiliar symbols. A folded letter. And an obsidian pendant shaped like a crescent moon. Hands trembling, Lyra unfolded the letter. Her father’s handwriting stared back at her. If you are reading this, then I have failed to protect you. Her breath caught. Lyra, everything I told you about your mother was false. She did not die giving birth to you. She was murdered. And the men hunting you now serve the same darkness that killed her. Tears streamed down Lyra’s face as she read. You are not an omega. You are the last surviving heir of the Moonshadow bloodline. Her heart stopped. The words blurred. Moonshadow. The extinct royal wolves of legend. The most feared bloodline in werewolf history. This had to be impossible. The forest suddenly went silent. Too silent. A cold presence swept through the trees. Lyra looked up sharply. Glowing red eyes stared at her from the darkness. Then another pair appeared. And another. Rogues. At least a dozen. A low growl rippled through the shadows as a tall figure stepped forward. His black wolf eyes gleamed under the moonlight. He was terrifyingly handsome, with dark hair falling over sharp features and power radiating from him like a storm. He smiled slowly. “Well,” he said, his voice smooth as midnight. “Looks like the Alpha King’s rejected mate has wandered straight into my territory.” Darius Nightfang tilted his head, studying her with dangerous interest. And then he said the words that made Lyra’s blood freeze. “I’ve been waiting for you.”
