The Mate Rejection
The night smelled like silver rain and blood.
From the balcony of the pack hall, Lyra Vale watched wolves dance beneath glowing lanterns while music thundered across the courtyard. Every member of the Shadow Ridge Pack had gathered for the Bloodmoon Ceremony the sacred night when newly turned adults discovered their mates.
Excitement filled the air.
Laughter.
Hope.
Fear.
Lyra felt none of it.
She stood hidden behind stone pillars, clutching the sleeves of her plain black dress while omegas rushed around carrying drinks for higher-ranked wolves.
“Move faster!”
A she-wolf shoved Lyra’s shoulder hard enough to nearly knock the tray from her hands.
“You’re embarrassing the omega house.”
Lyra lowered her eyes immediately. “Sorry.”
The she-wolf sneered before walking away.
Lyra exhaled slowly.
This was normal.
In Shadow Ridge, rank meant everything. Alphas ruled. Betas obeyed. Omegas survived quietly if they were lucky.
And Lyra?
She was worse than an omega.
She was the daughter of a disgraced Beta who lost his status years ago after being falsely accused of betrayal. Since then, both of them had lived at the edge of the territory like ghosts nobody wanted.
Still, tonight mattered.
Tonight, the Moon Goddess would reveal her mate.
A tiny part of her hoped destiny might finally change.
“Lyra.”
Her father’s voice softened her tension instantly.
Elias Vale approached through the crowd wearing an old dark coat. Gray streaks lined his hair now, but his eyes remained warm.
“You should be inside with the others,” he said gently.
She forced a smile. “I don’t think anyone wants me there.”
“That doesn’t matter.”
Easy for him to say.
The other wolves whispered whenever she walked past. Some claimed she carried bad luck. Others said her wolf was weak because she still hadn’t shifted fully despite being nearly eighteen.
Lyra looked toward the ballroom entrance. “What if nobody comes?”
Elias placed a hand on her shoulder. “Then they do not deserve you.”
Before she could answer, a loud horn echoed through the hall.
The ceremony was beginning.
Every wolf immediately fell silent.
Even the air changed.
A powerful scent drifted across the courtyard pine smoke, winter ice, and dominance so overwhelming that weaker wolves instinctively lowered their heads.
Fear crawled down Lyra’s spine.
“He’s here,” someone whispered.
“The Alpha King…”
The gates opened slowly.
Then Kael Draven stepped inside.
Tall.
Mercilessly handsome.
Dressed entirely in black.
His silver eyes swept across the crowd with cold authority while royal guards followed behind him. The moment he entered, every alpha in the territory bowed immediately.
Even Shadow Ridge’s pack alpha lowered his head.
Kael Draven was not merely a ruler. He was the strongest Alpha alive.Stories about him spread across every territory. Entire rogue armies feared his name. They said he killed challengers with his bare hands. That no woman had ever touched his heart. That he carried darkness inside him gifted directly by the Moon Goddess herself.
Lyra should have looked away.
Instead, her eyes locked onto his.
And the world stopped.
A violent pull slammed into her chest.
Her wolf silent for years suddenly awakened with a painful cry.
Mate.
The word exploded through her soul.
Lyra staggered backward, nearly collapsing as heat spread through every nerve in her body.
No.
No, no, no
It couldn’t be him.
Not the Alpha King.
Kael’s expression changed instantly.
His sharp gaze snapped directly toward her.
The connection hit both of them at once.
Gasps spread across the courtyard.
“He found his mate…”
“Who is she?”
Kael walked toward her slowly.
Every step radiated terrifying power.
The crowd parted immediately, staring at Lyra with disbelief and envy.
Her heart pounded so hard she could barely breathe.
This was impossible.
The Moon Goddess had chosen her?
When Kael finally stopped inches away, silence consumed the entire hall. His silver eyes searched hers. For one brief second, Lyra thought she saw shock there.
Maybe even desire.
Hope bloomed painfully inside her chest.
Then his expression turned cold.
“What is your name?” he asked.
“L-Lyra.”
Recognition flashed across the face of Shadow Ridge’s alpha.
“M-my King,” the man stammered nervously. “She is merely an omega-born servant. Her bloodline is insignificant.”
Humiliation burned through Lyra instantly.
Kael continued staring at her.
Her wolf whimpered desperately inside.
Please.
Please don’t reject us.
The Alpha King leaned closer.
“You are my mate,” he said quietly.
The entire crowd erupted into whispers.
Lyra’s heart nearly stopped.
But before happiness could fully reach her
Kael spoke again.
“And I reject you.”
Silence crashed across the courtyard.
Lyra froze.
The words struck harder than a blade.
Pain exploded through the mate bond instantly, stealing the breath from her lungs. Her knees buckled as agony tore through her chest.
Her wolf screamed.
The crowd stared openly now.
Some shocked.
Others amused.
Tears blurred Lyra’s vision. “W-what…?”
Kael’s face remained emotionless.
“A king cannot take a weak omega as his Luna.”
Every word shattered her further.
“You are unworthy of standing beside me.”
The humiliation was unbearable.
In front of everyone.
In front of the entire pack.
Kael stepped back as though she disgusted him.
“I, Kael Draven, reject Lyra Vale as my mate.”
The bond snapped violently.Lyra cried out, collapsing onto the stone floor while pain ripped through her body like fire.No wolf survived rejection easily.Especially not from a mate this powerful. Her father rushed toward her instantly. “Lyra!”But the damage was done.
The Alpha King turned away without another glance.
As if she meant nothing.
As if destiny itself had been a mistake.
The crowd began whispering immediately.
“Pathetic.”
“No wonder he rejected her.”
“She should be grateful he acknowledged her at all.”
Tears rolled silently down Lyra’s face while her chest felt hollow and broken.
Yet beneath the pain…
Something else awakened.
Deep inside her blood, something ancient stirred violently.
Darkness.
Power.
A voice whispered through her soul.
They will all kneel eventually.Lyra’s eyes flashed silver for one terrifying second. And far across the courtyard, Kael suddenly stopped walking.
Because for the first time in his life The Alpha King felt fear.
