A Big Mistake

Damian’s POV: Shit, I was about to tell Cassie I thought she was my mate when Luke barged in to interrupt. But I had never heard about a wolf having a human mate, in Venula we were told wolves could only be paired up with other wolves. But as I thought about it more I realized it could have been a lie to prevent wolves from coming into the human world. I needed to ask someone but there was only one wolf expert I knew in this world. ‘Can a wolves mate be a human?’, I asked Luke who was watching a cartoon on the TV. He paused the TV then turned to me and looked at me with a stern face. ‘It’s literally in every werewolf book’ ‘Just answer please, I really need to know’ He sat up on the couch, Everything alright?’, he asked. ‘Yeahh, I mean not really’, I sighed. ‘I kind of told Cassie wolves couldn’t mate with human’, I let out. ‘Wait what? For real?’, he asked quickly. ‘I don’t know’, I lamented as I stood up from the couch. ‘And I didn’t mean to, I wanted to tell I didn’t think so and that I felt she was my mate but then you barged in and interrupted this morning’. ‘Well you seriously got to fix this, a few days ago Cassie asked me if it were possible for a werewolves mate to be a human and I said yes. And I literally saw her face light up when I did’, Luke said. ‘Oh my God. What have I done?’ ‘Chill, it’s not that big a deal. You’ll just tell her when she gets back’, Luke said. ‘Yeah tr-‘, I tried to say then my head started banging. Something was off. I didn’t know what but something was definitely off. I fell on the floor curled up and I began screaming in pain. Luke ran over to me quickly, ‘what’s wrong?’, he shook me. ‘Damian, Damian!’ Someone was calling for help. The pain finally left and Luke helped me get on the couch. ‘Something is wrong. I don’t know what but something is’, I said to Luke. ‘What do you mean?’, Luke asked. ‘It was as if someone was asking for my help’, I told him. ‘Wait wait wait. How will someone be asking for your help? And who?’, he asked. ‘I have no idea, only person I’m bonded to here are you and possibly…’ ‘Cassie’, we said together. If Cassie was actually my mate, me being able to sense if she’s in danger would make sense. But what could be wrong with her. ‘Call Cassie’, I said to Luke. He went and got a phone then called her. ‘She’s not answering’, he shouted with the phone by his ear. That was bad, that was real bad. Cassie always answered any call from Luke, no matter how unimportant or useless. ‘Uhm try calling Evelyn’, I told Luke again. He went through the phone to find her number then immediately phoned her but it didn’t go through. We tried about two more times but it was the same thing. ‘This is bad. Really bad’, I screamed. I stood up, my head was still aching a little. ‘I’ll run over to the cafe’, I said. ‘I’ll come with you’, Luke shrieked a bit. ‘There’s no way. Cassie’s car isn’t here’, I tried telling him. ‘I want to help’, he screamed almost tearing up. ‘Don’t worry little guy’, I knelt down beside him. ‘I’m sure she’s alright’, I said as I patted his head. ‘I’ll be really quick’. ‘Here’, he said handing the phone to me. ‘Call me immediately you see’. ‘Sure’, I collected the phone from him and partially transformed. My claws came out, my body became a little hairy and my incisors were far more distinct than before. He gasped, ‘Woah’. ‘I have to run really fast and try to avoid as much people as I can’, I told him. ‘Wait!’, Luke screamed as he ran inside to get something. He came back with a hoodie and handed it over to me. ‘So people won’t see you so well’. ‘Thanks’, I said as I collected the hoodie. I put it on and then I left home. I ran really fast, probably causing people to look back as a dash of wind blew behind them. I got to the Cafe then I transformed back. Nothing seemed to be going on. Everything looked normal. I went in quickly and then I saw Evelyn but I didn’t see Cassie. I walked over to Evelyn. ‘Hey Evelyn. Where’s Cassie?’, I asked her. ‘Uhm Cassie’s busy’, she replied. ‘So she’s alright?’, I asked. ‘What do you mean by alright?’, she asked as she dropped what she was doing. ‘Wait, so Cassie’s not here?’, I asked. I was beginning to get a little bit confused. ‘No she’s not’, Evelyn said. ‘Then where is she?’, I asked sharply. ‘She’s busy’, Evelyn said defensively. ‘It’s an emergency Evelyn’ Her face changed. ‘What do you mean?’, she asked. I obviously couldn’t tell her I just felt something was wrong. Or that I was a wolf and Cassie might be my mate so I felt a disturbance which meant something must be wrong with her. ‘It’s a personal emergency’, I finally said. Evelyn seemed to be getting tired of the whole thing. She sighed, ‘She went on a date with Jeff’, she finally said. ‘Wait what?’. Was that aching feeling on my head all because I sensed jealousy. It couldn’t be, it definitely couldn’t. Something must be going on where they are. ‘Where are they?’, I asked Evelyn. ‘I can’t tell you that’, she replied. ‘Uhm, I would like to order’, one of the customers called out to Evelyn. ‘Be right there’, she said back to him. ‘I have to go Damian’. ‘Evelyn please it’s really important’, I said holding her back. She scoffed, ‘Fine, she’s at one Chinese restaurant downtown’, she finally told me. She gave me some more information about the place then she went to meet her customer. ‘Thank you’. I rushed out of the cafe then walked a little bit. I partially transformed again then ran quickly to where Evelyn said Cassie was. I got there but the place was closed. Did Evelyn lie to me? I was pissed and worried at the same time. I wondered what could have happened to her. Could Jeff have done something to her. He didn’t seem like that guy but I didn’t want to rule it out. I got a call on the phone Luke gave me and I picked the call. It was Luke. He was probably calling to ask if I had seen Cassie. I put the phone on my ear. ‘Hey buddy’. ‘Hey, have you found Cassie yet?’, he asked from the phone. ‘Uhm, not yet man’. Even though I wasn’t there with him I could feel his mood change after I said this. ‘But I will soon do don’t worry’, I said in a failed attempt to cheer him up. ‘Okay’, he said, he sounded really down. ‘Call me when you do’. ‘Sure’, I said then hung up. I felt so bad and I was really worried. Where could Cassie be? I tried checking around the area but I still couldn’t find her but I didn’t give up. I kept checking around and asked around from different people but it was to no avail. I was about to give up and that was when her scent hit my nose. Cassie’s scent. I was sure of it. I followed the scent and there were a lot of people seated. I finally saw Cassie, this time it wasn’t my head that ached but my heart. Cassie was having fun with Jeff, they were so close to each other and were laughing. She looked really happy. ‘I guess she didn’t need my help then’, I said under my breath. My heart felt really heavy as I stood there and watched, so I turned back and walked away. I picked up the phone and called Luke. He picked, ‘She’s fine’, I said to him. ‘Oh okay. Where was she?’, he asked. I took a deep breath, ‘It was nothing. She was just with Jeff’, I said to him. ‘Oh… okay’, Luke said. I was sure he knew I wasn’t feeling so good. ‘Alright then. I’ll see you soon then’. ‘Yeah’, I said then hung up. I ran back home. I knocked on the door and Luke opened it for me. ‘Sorry man’, he said immediately he saw me. I faked a laugh, ‘Thanks buddy’ ‘It might not be what guy thought. Maybe they jus-‘ ‘I know what I saw’, I interrupted. ‘But it’s alright. It’s probably true that wolves can’t have human mates’, I said as I chuckled. ‘Is there any snack in the fridge?’, I asked, there was no point dwelling on it so I just wanted to move on. ‘Uhm, yeah sure’, Luke stuttered. We ate some snacks and watched TV. Cassie’s car returned but she wasn’t the one in it. It was Evelyn. I hid in Luke’s so she wouldn’t see me when she came in. ‘Hey, Cassie’s not home yet?’, Evelyn asked Luke as she checked the fridge for snacks. ‘And where are all the snacks’. ‘Nah, she’s not’, Luke replied. ‘Hmm, someone must be getting her…’, she looked at Luke then thought about what she was about to say. ‘She must be having fun’, she said. ‘Well if you’re bored, I can keep you company’, Luke said moving close to Evelyn. ‘Okayyyyyy, I got to go’, she said as she tried to move away from him. She went out the door and I came outside immediately. I wanted to thank Luke the plan he used to get her to go but after I thought about it, it didn’t seem like he intended for her to go so I just said, ‘You’ll get her next time buddy’. Like and I watched movies until Cassie finally came home. I didn’t know what to say to her, I definitely couldn’t tell her I saw her with Jeff. She entered the living room, ‘Hey you guys’, she said as she dropped her bag on the table. ‘Hey’, Luke said. I was surprised he didn’t bring up the whole we thought something happened to her thing. He was probably watching out for me. ‘Hey, how was your day?’, I finally asked her. ‘Uhm it was fine’, she replied. ‘How was work?’, I asked her. ‘Work was fine’, she said. Oh wow, she just lied. ‘Actually…’, she said then paused for a while. ‘I spent the day with Jeff’. I already knew but hearing it come from her made it hurt even more. ‘Oh, cool, cool’, I said trying to sound as if I didn’t care. I sighed. ‘So how was it?’, I asked her. ‘It was… nice’, she replied. ‘Alright. Cool’, I said again. ‘Are you hungry, I can make som-‘ ‘I already ate’, she interrupted. ‘But thank you’. ‘Okay I’ll see you tomorrow, I’m really tired so I want to go to bed’, she said. ‘Oh okay, I want to talk a walk real quick’, I told her ‘Alright’, she mouthed. The tension in the air was insane. ‘Okay, goodnight then’, I said. ‘Goodnight’, she said back. ‘Goodnight Luke’, she screamed as she went into her room. She slammed her room door and I stood up to go outside immediately she did. ‘Where are you going?’, Luke asked. ‘I just wanna take a quick walk’, I said to him. ‘Oh okay’. I opened the door then shut it and walked for a while. Images of Cassie and Jeff kept flashing through my mind. I took that walk to clear my head but I did the complete opposite. I thought about the whole Cassie and Jeff thing throughout the walk. I had walked far from the house a bit before I noticed. ‘Oh s**t’, I whispered. I turned and started walking back to the house and that was when someone called my name. ‘D- Damian’, the voice said. I recognized that voice anywhere, I turned back and I was right. It was Alex.
