Cassie’s POV:
I woke up with a serious migraine, I was hungover from yesterday’s party. I went to the kitchen to get a coffee and I met Damian there.
‘Hey, good morning’, I said to him.
He held his head and groaned in pain, ‘why does my head hurt this much?’.
‘You’re hungover’, I chuckled. I poured in a cup of coffee and handed it to him, ‘Here, drink this’.
‘Thanks’
I poured one for myself too. ‘Soo, how was the party?’, I asked him.
‘My parents didn’t keep introducing me to all the clan’s leaders daughter, so I’ll say. It was pretty good.’, he said then grinned.
I had to laugh. ‘Wait, why?’, I asked taking a sip of my coffee.
‘Well if I got married to any of the clan’s leaders daughter it could help boost our clan rank’, I said.
‘That’s good right?’, I blurted out stupidly and even sounded excited.
He chuckled a bit, ‘yeah it is. But it just didn’t feel right’,
‘But I mean come on, you’re a prince. Wasn’t it kind of expected?’, I asked him.
He took a sip of his coffee then took a deep breath, ‘I kind of did’, he said then laughed. His smile changed into something a little bit more serious. ‘But I just couldn’t. I needed something more. Something deeper’, he said then took a deep breath.
I held my cup close to my mouth with my two hands but I drink. ‘I understand’, I said.
He looked at me then smiled, ‘Werewolves… have mates. People they meet and they immediately feel that spark, that deep connection to the other person, you immediately know this is the person for you’.
Oh my God! Was he talking about me?
‘And every werewolf has his or her werewolf mate’, he said.
My heart shattered immediately he said this. So a werewolf’s mate could only be another werewolf? And there I was thinking I was his… I felt a little foolish.
‘Hey Cassie, hello’, he said interrupting me from my thoughts. ‘Are you alright?’
‘Yeah, yeah. Was just thinking about something’, I replied.
‘Oh okay. So I was saying lately I’ve been feeling li…’
‘My head hurts’, Luke screamed and interrupted Damian. He walked dramatically to the kitchen with both of his hands on his head as he groaned in pain throughout the supposed to be short walk. ‘I’m never drinking again in my life!’, he screamed.
‘You weren’t meant to before’, I said as I laughed.
Luke sat on the kitchen stool. ‘Coffee me’, he said.
‘Coffee you?’, Damian laughed.
‘Well, you guys are having coffee to cure your headaches, why can’t I?’
‘Because you’ll be awake all day and that’ll be everyone’s problem’, I said. ‘I’ll check my bathroom drawer there must be some aspirin you can use for the migraine’.
‘Have some aspirin, there must be some drawers to help with the migraine’, Luke said trying to mimic me.
‘Ha ha ha’, I said then I started to walk to my room.
‘Coffee me Damian’, Luke tried to whisper.
‘I heard that’, I screamed from my room.
Damian laughed and Luke mumbled.
I checked the bathroom drawer and took the tablets then went back to the kitchen. ‘I picked out one then handed it to him. ‘Wait aren’t you meant to be in school?’, I asked him as I picked up my mug.
‘No, again, it’s a weekend, but aren’t you meant to be at work?’, he asked.
‘Oh s**t!’, I shouted.
‘Can’t you take a break for today?’, Damian asked. ‘Maybe we could go-‘
I was still a little heartbroken and kind of angry about what Damian said earlier so the, ‘No. I can’t’, came out a little bit rude than I expected.
‘Oh okay’, he said. ‘Is everything alright?’, he asked.
‘Yeah, yeah. What could be wrong?’, I said then gave him a fake smile.
I dropped my cup then went back to my room. I hurriedly prepared for work then rushed to then went into my car without
saying a word to Damian.
I couldn’t stop thinking about what he said on my ride to work. But it was really disappointing to find out wolves could only be mates with other wolves. So what were those feelings I felt? Were they just nothing? I even did a research on if werewolves mate could be humans and it said they could in the article but hey, we can’t believe everything we see in the internet right? I began to feel bad for how I behaved to him before I left, I mean, it’s not his fault. I took a glance at my watch and saw that I was really late.
I finally got to the cafe and hurried inside and the first person I saw was Jeff.
‘Uhm, hey Jeff. What are you doing here?’, I asked.
‘I came to see you.’, he said.
‘Uhm, okay. But I have to work now so maybe another time I said as I tried to walk past him. He blocked me.
‘No you don’t’, he said smiling.
‘What do you mean?’, I asked sharply because I knew Jeff could do some pretty crazy things. I looked over his shoulder and I saw my best friend showing me a hundred dollar bill and waving to me.
‘Really? You paid Evelyn to do my job?’
‘I wanted to spend the day with you’, he said trying to grab my hand, I moved it back to avoid his.
‘Come on. Pleaseeee, we could go to that Chinese place you love’, he said.
I took a deep breath in then I finally caved, ‘Alright, fine’, I said.
He gasped, ‘Great!’.
I handed my keys to Evelyn so she could help me return my car after work then we went into Jeff’s car. He had gotten a Cadillac, I was a bit impressed but I wasn’t going to fall for his lying cheating ass again.
‘So how have you been?’, he asked as he focused on me rather than the road.
‘I’ve been good. Thanks’. I replied.
‘That’s nice, good is nice’, he stuttered. ‘Uhm… ’, he said as he thought of what to say, ‘How’s Luke? Did he finally find one of those werewolves?’, he asked then laughed.
‘He actually did’, I said as I looked at him then widened my lips.
He was quiet for a while then started laughing. ‘You always make me laugh’, he said.
I rolled my eyes as I faced the other side of the door and wondered why I agreed to follow him in the first place.
‘Have you written anything lately?’, he asked again.
‘No’
‘Come on Cass, I’m really trying here. Please help me here’.
‘Oh so you’ll travel again and not reply any of my calls and text again’, I fumed.
‘I’m really sorry abo-‘
‘I’m not done yet’, I interrupted.
‘Sorry’
I continued, ‘then I’ll travel again to come and see you to meet you cheating on me again with some random girl you met at a party right?’ I snapped.
He took a deep breath in then let it out, ‘I’m really sorry for ghosting you Cassie, I really have no excuse for that and I don’t know why I did it but I know I’m sorry. And about the girl, Cassie I was drunk and high and it was the biggest mistake I ever made’.
I got angry again as I remembered all this.
He looked over at me and continued, ‘I’m really sorry Cassie. I know I was a jerk but I’m really sorry. I’m really really sorry, and I hope you can forgive me’.
I looked at him and I wasn’t sure if it was his not so compelling speech or the fact that I was kind of angry with Damian but I told him, ‘Okay’, I took a deep breath. ‘It’s alright, for real’.
‘Really?’, he mouthed with excitement.
‘I’m not completely over it’, I said quickly. ‘But I’ll try and forgive you’.
‘Thank you Cass’, he said. He looked at me then smiled.
We finally got to the restaurant but it had been shut down, apparently someone reported it for poor hygiene.
‘Noooooo!’, I screamed then faked crying. ‘Their dumplings were unmatched’, I cried.
‘I know’, Jeff said. ‘You could eat a thousand of it, remember?’
‘And now I would never get to again’, I said then sat on a pavement. Jeff came to join me.
He sighed, ‘Bummer’.
‘Yeah’.
‘Wait! I know where we can go’, he stood up then stretched his hand to me. I grabbed his hands then got up. ‘Come on’, he said dragging me along.
‘Aren’t we taking your car’, I asked as I staggered trying to match his pace.
‘No need for that’, he said still dragging me along.
‘This is delicious!’, I screamed with my mouth full. We were seated beside a food truck.
‘I knew you’d like it’, Jeff said then laughed.
‘For real, this is the best shawarma I have ever had’, I said again with my mouth still full. I took a huge sip of my smoothie then another big bite of shawarma.
‘You can never go wrong with Uncle Ben’, he said.
‘How come I never knew about this place?’
He looked at me and chuckled, ‘well you’re always really busy so you’ve not had a lot of time to spend for yourself’.
I stopped eating, ‘Yeah, true. But it’s not like I got a choice though’.
‘But don’t you think you could give colleg-‘
I interrupted him quickly, ‘I can’t’. I dropped the shawarma on a plate, ‘Not everyone has a perfect life like you. Things don’t just go well for everyone like you’.
He huffed, ‘My life’s not perfect’.
‘Oh yeah right, your grazed your toes ge-‘
‘I lost my mom Cassie’
I went blank for a second. I didn’t know what to say, I finally found it, ‘I’m sorry’. I sniffled. ‘I’m really sorry. I had no idea’
‘It’s alright’
‘No, no. I’m really sorry. It was really insensitive of me to say that. I’m sorry’.
‘It’s alright, for real’.
I couldn’t believe I was so insensitive. I thought everything was going perfectly well but he had his own s**t that he was dealing with.
‘Can I ask what happened?’
‘She had been battling cancer for a while’, his voice was broken. ‘And… cancer won’, he struggled to say forcing a fake smile.
I moved closer to him to give him a hug, ‘I’m really sorry’, I said to him hugging him tight.
He gulped, ‘Thank you. It was just a few weeks ago but my dad has been a wreck ever since. That’s why I had to come home’.
I couldn’t believe all this happened right under my nose and I didn’t know. I was a bad person and a bad friend.
I hugged him even tighter, ‘I’m here for you’.
