CHAPTER 1
Valerie gnarled in anger and disgust as her father and mother stood there and watched.
“You must be crazy to think I will accept this useless marriage”
“I am not some object that you can pass around and use as a stop-gap for your errors”
“Darling, but you have to think this through,” Valerie’s father, Simon said in a low and soft tone, barely above a whisper.
“These are your mistakes!”
“Your mistakes,” Valerie lamented in disbelief.
Simon’s eyes opened wide in surprise as he had not seen her daughter so insistent on refusing something before.
“You think you can just marry me off to Kyle?”
“I will take no part in this”
“Not me!”
“You are both very crazy and inconsiderate,” she snarled as her tears trickled down her mother’s face. Valerie’s mother was aware that it was always going to be difficult to bring such news to her daughter.
“Darling, this is beyond me, you, or your mother,” Valerie’s father, Simon, said in a low tone.
“Yes, it was my mistake and I admit it”
“I misappropriated Kyle’s funds and I find it disappointing that he could make such an offer to me despite being his lead accountant for almost 15 years”
“No, you know what I find disappointing?”
“That you would even think that your daughter and only child should be used to settle a debt”
“Isn’t that disgusting?”
“Did you even give it a thought?”
“Did you even think that I could have plans of my own?”
“Someone I love?”
“I am 25 years old for God’s sake”
“I am not a child that you can bully and pass around,” Valerie said, her voice breaking as she held back the tears that were fighting to flow down her pretty face.
“I understand you, Valerie”
“But Kyle has threatened to auction our house and every property I own as payment for the debt”
“Kyle is not a man to be joked with”
“He would go to any length to make sure that he recovers his money”
“If there were other options, we would have explored them,” Mr. Simon said calmly.
“My daughter, this is for the best,” Valerie’s mother added, hoping that they would have calmed her nerves.
“I am sure Kyle would shower you with his wealth”
“You would live in a mansion and be able to buy things that you have always wanted”
“Kyle is a rich man, remember?”
“Perhaps even the richest in Florida”
“Doesn't that entice you a little bit?” Valerie’s mother said with her face pitiable and lowly.
“I won't agree to this,” Valerie retorted, the tears already winning as they trickled down her face even though she tried to show strength and control over the situation.
“I have a boyfriend and you already know this”
“You know him”
“We are even about to get married”
“He has already proposed to me and of course, I accepted it because I love him”
“How do you think it will sound if I tell Oswald that our marriage is off”
“Dear, this is our only option,” Valerie’s mother said, moving closer to caress her hands.
Valerie retracted her body away from her parents and headed for the door, “I won't take this”
“This is my life, my future”
“I won't leave it in the hands of just anybody”
“Dad, you can deal with your mistakes yourself”
“I am out of here”
Simon rushed towards the door to block her from moving out with tempers flaring between the two.
Simon, locking his eyes at his daughter, increased the tone of his voice and said, “How can you be this selfish?”
“I have trained you and given you the best care possible”
“I have always provided for you”
“I have been a good father to you”
“I have always sorted out your bills”
“Paid your school fees even when it was difficult to gather money”
“You have just one opportunity to be grateful but you behave like this?”
“Don't you understand what is at stake here?”
“Do you want your parents to be homeless?”
Valerie went back to her bed devastated as she buried her head in her hands. It was as if she was in a dream.
“Wake up! Wake up!” She whispered to herself silently with her face still buried in her hands.
“It won't be as bad as you are thinking now,” Simon said, his temper cooled down a bit.
“It's a big deal for you to be married to Kyle”
Valerie was broken. She couldn't say a word more as she watched her parents walk away slowly out of her room.
“We will come back when you feel better,” Valerie’s mother said pitifully.
It felt as if they were the angels of death who had come to deliver her death date and informed her to be prepared.
Her parents left the door open and she angrily went to lock it behind them.
She didn't know what else to do and she could only look up at the ceiling in disappointment.
What would she tell her boyfriend, Oswald? How would her boyfriend react knowing that he had been waiting for the summer break so that he could visit again and this time tie the knot?
Just as Valerie was pondering what line of action to take next, there was a knock on the main door. Simon looked through the window to be sure that it wasn't one of Kyle’s men.
He knew that since he had already agreed to Kyle marrying his daughter, it was only a matter of time before she left his house into her new home.
“Who’s there?” Simon asked as he reached the door.
It was a dispatch rider. He was on a helmet and he had a designed box in his hands and another smaller wrapped item on top of the box.
“Good evening, I believe I am at the right address,” the dispatch rider said.
“This is number 57 right?”
Simon looked confused as his wife walked up to the door. He knew that he or his wife had not ordered anything.
They soon figured that it might be for Valerie.
“Valerie!” Simon said, his voice loud.
Valerie, who was devastated, dragged her feet towards the door.
“I believe you are the one I am looking for,” the dispatch rider said.
“You match the description given to me”.
Valerie moved closer to the dispatch rider to access the gifts.
“Are you Valerie Seagull?” he asked.
“Yes, that’s me” she responded a little shy and intimidated because her parents were there and watching.
“This is for you, ma’am,” the dispatch rider said with a smile as he drove off.
“That's from your boyfriend right?” Valerie’s father, Simon said, snarling a little.
“How is that your business?” Valerie responded angrily as she walked back to her room.
Simon was about to follow her to have further discussions with her but his wife patted him on the back and pulled him back.
“I hope you know that you should tell your boyfriend what the real situation is like right now,” Simon shouted, resigned to following her.
Simon soon received a phone call.
“Simon,” a baritone voice echoed from the phone.
