I found Liam after his game.
He was sitting alone in the locker room hallway.
Not celebrating.
Not surrounded by people.
Just waiting.
Like he always did.
Like he was expecting to leave alone.
“You won.”
He looked up.
“Yeah.”
“You don’t seem happy.”
He shrugged.
“It was just a game.”
I smiled slightly.
“You’re impossible.”
“There it is again.”
“What?”
“You saying I’m impossible.”
“Because you are.”
A small smile appeared.
Then disappeared.
“Sophie…”
His tone changed.
“What?”
“You shouldn’t be here.”
I rolled my eyes.
“You really need new lines.”
“I’m serious.”
“So am I.”
He looked at me.
And something in his expression made me stop.
“You’re going to get caught between everyone.”
“I’m already there.”
His face tightened.
“I don’t want that.”
“But you’re the only person who isn’t telling me what to do.”
He went quiet.
Because he knew.
I stepped closer.
“You let me choose.”
His voice was barely above a whisper.
“I don’t know how to be chosen.”
The words broke something in me.
Because Liam Carter didn’t need someone to save him.
He needed someone to believe him.
“I choose you.”
His eyes lifted.
And for a moment…
The world stopped.
Then he whispered:
“You don’t know what you’re saying.”
“I do.”
