I saw Liam that night. And he looked angry. Not at me. At himself. “You talked to Ryan.” I frowned. “How do you know everything?” “Because he came to see me.” My stomach dropped. “What?” Liam looked away. “He warned me.” “About what?” “That I would ruin your life.” I felt anger rise. “He doesn’t get to decide that.” “No.” Liam looked at me. “But he believes he does.” The silence was heavy. Then Liam stepped closer. “Sophie.” I looked up. “I’m trying to do the right thing.” My heart hurt. “By leaving?” “Yes.” “Why?” His voice cracked slightly. “Because I don’t know how to want something without destroying it.” I stared at him. “You’re not destroying me.” His eyes searched mine. “You don’t know that.” “I know enough.” For a moment… Neither of us moved. Then he whispered: “You’re making this impossible.” “Maybe it was never supposed to be easy.” His hand lifted. Slowly. Carefully. Like he was asking. I didn’t move away. His fingers brushed my cheek. And then— A voice behind us. “Sophie.” I froze. Ethan. Again. But this time… He didn’t look angry. He looked scared. Because he knew. Something had changed. And there was no going back.
