Chapter 51Penny dialed Lani's cell phone. When her daughter didn't answer, she left a simple message. “What are you kids up to now? Call me back.” A few minutes later, she received a call. Julian held the phone to Lani's lips. “Mom? Can you hear me? Do you know someone called Julian?” Penny's heart skipped a beat. She wasn't sure what to say. After that freaky encounter with Doreen, she didn't want more drama. She drawled out a long, “Yes,” that sounded like it had several syllables. Cautious, she lowered the octave of her voice. “Why?” Traffic noise made her push her ear closer to the receiver. She heard a scuffle. “Lani? Lani? Can you hear me?” When the phone line disconnected, she screamed. Loud–louder than she had ever screamed–but all the other sounds on the Strip drowned it out. “
