Chapter 1: We need to run faster!
The breath escapes my lips and drifts up into the night sky. Snow has blanketed the forest floor and I'm sitting on a large boulder waiting. she is late. I'm starting to get nervous hoping she hasn't been caught. The plan was simple. We would wait till the New Year's when the fireworks started and make a break for the packs border. Everyone would be distracted and looking up. They wouldn't notice 2 girls missing till morning. I'd lived in this pack since I was a baby. I had no mother or father. In fact there are a lot of us here that didn't have families. We had been told that during some attacks a large population of adults had been killed. Leaving small children to depend on the kindness of others to take us in. I spat in the snow in anger. Kindness, yeah right. There was no kindness in this pack. Its Alpha Trevor was a cruel, disgusting weasel of a man. He constantly cheated on his Luna. The greasy thin Alpha always laughed and said the younger the better, when she confronted him for his infidelity. His beta and gamma where no better. I was lucky to be thought of as a cursed wolf. The only touching they did to me was beatings for the most trivial things. Like not making water boil faster when I'm in the kitchen. I turned 19 some time last summer. None of us really knew our birthdays so I chose a day in August to be mine. I have pale almost purple eyes that made my fiery red hair almost glow. I'm 5'9 taller than most females. I have a birth mark of a moon on my left shoulder and a star on my right. But the cursed part was that my wolf Onyx is pure black with matching purple eyes. She hates them as much as I do. " Where is she? If she doesn't come when the first firework shows we have to leave her behind Jenny." Onyx was pacing and nervous. I shifted the backpack on my shoulders, and blow the clouds in little rings trying to soothe the anxiety inside. "Hey now, we are doing this for Trixie. She can't survive another night here. Let alone deal with the constant attention of the men. She was assaulted again the morning. This time by the Alpha himself." "Survival is all that matters, that poor girl needs help. I'm just worried they will follow her." I don't respond and check my watch, 11:37 pm. I bite my lip, Onyx is right. At the stroke of midnight we have to run. If I ran for help maybe we would be able to come back and save her. I shook my head no, we leave with her or not at all. It was over two hours to the edge of the border where I stood. We had been told since small pups that the other packs near us. That They are monsters that eat small children and kill anything that moves on sight. The Crimson moon Pack was so blood thirsty they had kegs of blood to drink from. I shivered not sure if I was afraid or it's just that cold. It was a risk I was willing to take, I had over heard the others talking that on the next moon. They were shipping a bunch of us girls to be breeders. I guess there was a cousin of the Alpha who needed more girls and we had gotten too old for him, Trixie and I had been on the list. Over my dead body I snorted, It's either now or never. I heard a morning dove coo, I responded with a blue jay call. I see a tiny blonde girl in jeans and a light grey jacket as pale as the moonlight and just as delicate. It was Trixie appearing from the shadows. I relax a bit and rush to give her a hug. She looked disheveled. I frown. "What took you so long, Onyx and I were so worried." She responded bitterly" Everyone is very drunk and I got cornered by Beta Brad." I hug her again and kiss her forehead. "Hush now it doesn't matter, we are leaving it behind. Hurry we don't have much time." She nods and we hold hands as we start for the border. She just turned 17 last month, and she is the closest thing I have to a sister. It's been the two of us for as long as I can remember. My eyes scan around us making sure no one is following. We had to be quick and careful. If they caught us it was over. I had been on patrol watch as punishment many times. I'd bite anyone silly enough to not believe I was cursed. Each time I get the s**t kicked out of me and tossed out for border watch. I'd beg and cry and plead to not have to go. That I was afraid of rouges, and the dark. They would laugh and make me take the punishment, the joke was on them. It was all an act, I loved every moment of patrol. It was freedom, and since no one wanted to be my partner. I was left alone for days with no one to hurt me. I know these woods like the back of my hand. Trixie had never been past where we had met up in the lower tree line. She held my hand as we ran. I was upset that it had snowed last night. Our foot prints might give us away. I pushed that thought to the back of my mind and ran faster. Almost dragging poor Trixie behind me in my haste. We made it to the top of the ridge line just as the fireworks had started to pop off in the distance behind us. looking at my watch it said 12:02 am. I looked at Trixie and smiled, it was all coming together. We where running towards the unknown. We ran for another 45 min before we stopped to catch our breath and take a sip of water. The fireworks are almost over and we are so close to the border. The last thing we have to do is cross the river and go through the mountain pass. That might take us another hour before we make it into the crimson moon territory. I look around and onyx and I exchange and uneasy feeling. I tap Trixie's arm and motion that we need to keep going. We are not out of danger just yet. She puts the cap back on the water and we silently continue till we reach the river. It's frozen It's our lucky night, I test it to make sure it can support our weight. When I was satisfied that it was, we hurried across carefully. The sounds of fireworks growing dimmer with each minute. When we finally reached the other side of the river. I realized I had been hold my breath the whole time and let it out. Trixie had been doing the same. We ran as fast as our frozen legs would take us. Something in the the back of my head was telling me to hurry. The fireworks had stopped appearing and the Forrest was quiet. I saw the two tall pine trees at the end of the pass. I grab Trixie's hand and point, just a few more feet and we will be across. Then I heard the sounds of running paws in the distances behind us. "NO! They found us" onyx yelled in my head. I didn't turn to look. "Trixie run faster!" I shouted. She almost stopped in fear and I pushed her. I can smell the pines we are so close. The paws are getting louder, I hear the labored breathing of the wolves. Trixie and I stumbled and went crashing into the pine needles, panicked I pick her up. "Hurry we have to get further past the line!" Alpha Trevor was right there laughing behind us. "Where do you think you're going." he snarls He grabs Trixie's foot and she screams into the cold night.
