CHAPTER TWO: THE PERFECT MORNING

1832 Words
Morning came gently over the Moretti estate. Soft golden sunlight slipped through the tall windows, falling across the polished floors of the enormous mansion. Outside, the gardens looked untouched by the troubles that had begun to gather around the Moretti family. The fountains continued to flow. The flowers moved softly with the morning breeze. Security guards stood at their usual positions around the gates. Everything appeared normal. Everything appeared perfect. But Isabella Moretti knew that appearances could be deceiving. She stood before the mirror in her bedroom, adjusting the sleeve of her cream-colored blouse. Her long thick black hair fell neatly over her shoulders, and she stared at her reflection with a thoughtful expression. She had barely slept. The events of the previous evening kept replaying in her mind. The strange conversation. The tension in the house. The way everyone seemed to be hiding something. Isabella had grown up around powerful people. She understood that the Moretti name carried weight, and she understood that their enemies were never far away. But recently, something felt different. She picked up her phone from the dressing table. Several notifications appeared on the screen. One message immediately caught her attention. Are you awake? Isabella frowned. The number wasn't saved. She stared at it for several seconds before locking her phone. She wasn't going to respond. A knock sounded at the door. “Come in.” The door opened, and one of the household staff entered. “Good morning, Miss Isabella.” “Good morning.” “Breakfast is ready.” “I'll be down shortly.” The woman nodded and left. Isabella took one last look at herself in the mirror before leaving the room. As she walked through the hallway, she noticed two security guards standing near the staircase. That was unusual. There were normally guards at the entrances, but not inside the house this early in the morning. She slowed down. “Is everything okay?” One of the guards immediately straightened. “Yes, ma'am.” “Why are there extra guards inside?” The two men exchanged a quick glance. “Just routine security, ma'am.” Isabella didn't believe him. But she didn't push. She continued downstairs. The dining room was already prepared. Breakfast had been arranged neatly across the long table. Fresh fruit, bread, eggs, and coffee sat untouched. Isabella took her usual seat. She poured herself some juice and glanced around the room. Her father wasn't there. That was strange. He rarely missed breakfast without informing the household. “Where is everyone?” she asked one of the staff members. “Mr. Moretti is in his office, ma'am.” “And the others?” “They're attending to their usual duties.” Isabella nodded. She picked up a piece of toast but barely touched it. Her thoughts returned to the message on her phone. Who had sent it? And why? Before she could think further, footsteps sounded from the hallway. Her father entered the room. He looked unusually serious. “Good morning, Isabella.” “Good morning, Dad.” He took his seat. For several moments, neither of them spoke. Isabella watched him carefully. “You look worried.” Her father looked up. “I'm not worried.” “You are.” A faint smile appeared on his face. “You've become too observant.” “I've always been observant.” “That may be true.” He reached for his coffee. Isabella studied him. “Is something wrong?” “No.” She raised an eyebrow. “That's not convincing.” Her father sighed. “There's a business issue we're handling.” “What kind of issue?” “Nothing you need to concern yourself with.” Isabella's expression hardened slightly. “Whenever someone tells me that, it usually means I should be concerned.” Her father looked at her for a moment. “Isabella, some things are better left to the people responsible for them.” She leaned back. “Fine.” But she wasn't satisfied. She knew her father well enough to recognize when he was hiding something. And this morning, he was definitely hiding something. Her phone vibrated. She looked down. Another unknown message. You shouldn't trust everyone around you. Isabella's heart skipped. She quickly locked the phone. Her father noticed. “Who was that?” “No one.” He stared at her. “Isabella.” “It's nothing.” She stood. “I need some fresh air.” Before he could respond, she walked out of the dining room. She headed toward the garden. The morning air was cool against her skin. She walked slowly along the stone path, trying to clear her mind. The estate was peaceful. Too peaceful. She stopped near the fountain. Someone was watching her. She could feel it. Isabella turned. Nothing. Only the gardens. She looked around again. Still nothing. She shook her head. Maybe she was simply tired. Then she heard footsteps. She turned quickly. One of the estate guards approached. “Miss Isabella.” “Yes?” “Your father asked me to tell you that you shouldn't leave the estate today.” Her eyebrows pulled together. “Why?” “He didn't say.” “Did he say anything else?” “No, ma'am.” Isabella stared at him. “Fine.” The guard walked away. She remained where she was. She hated being kept in the dark. Especially when everyone around her seemed to know something she didn't. Her phone vibrated again. This time, there was no message. Instead, there was a photograph. Isabella opened it. Her face immediately changed. It was a photograph of the Moretti warehouse. She zoomed in. The picture appeared to have been taken the previous night. Someone had been watching the warehouse. Another message arrived. Ask your father what happened last night. Isabella's fingers tightened around the phone. She immediately turned toward the mansion. She needed answers. Inside, she found her father standing in his office with two men from the security team. Their conversation stopped the moment she entered. “Isabella.” “Dad, what's happening?” “Nothing.” “Stop saying that.” Her voice was firmer now. “I just received a photograph of the warehouse.” The room became silent. Her father's expression changed. “Show me.” She handed him the phone. He stared at the photograph. “Where did you get this?” “Someone sent it to me.” “Who?” “I don't know.” He looked at the security officers. “Leave us.” The men immediately walked out. Isabella crossed her arms. “Now tell me the truth.” Her father placed the phone on the desk. “There was a security problem last night.” “What kind of problem?” “We're investigating it.” “Does it have something to do with the shipment?” Her father's eyes narrowed. “How do you know about the shipment?” Isabella paused. “I heard you talking earlier.” He sighed. “You shouldn't have heard that.” “So there is a shipment.” “Yes.” “What happened to it?” “We don't know yet.” Her expression changed. “What do you mean you don't know?” “The vehicle left the warehouse yesterday. It was supposed to arrive at its destination last night.” “And?” “It never arrived.” Isabella stared at him. “Was it stolen?” “We don't know.” “Who was driving?” “We're trying to find him.” The room suddenly felt colder. Isabella understood the seriousness of the situation now. Someone had disappeared with one of the Moretti family's shipments. And someone had been watching the warehouse. “Dad…” Her father looked at her. “Stay away from this.” “Why?” “Because I said so.” She shook her head. “That isn't enough.” “It has to be.” His voice became firm. “Isabella, listen to me. Whatever happens, you don't investigate this yourself.” She stared at him. “Why are you so afraid?” Her father's expression softened. “I'm not afraid.” “You are.” He didn't answer. Isabella knew then that the situation was much worse than he had admitted. She turned toward the door. “Where are you going?” “To my room.” “Isabella.” She stopped. “Promise me you won't get involved.” She looked back at him. After a moment, she nodded. “I promise.” But neither of them believed it. Isabella returned to her room and closed the door behind her. She walked straight to her bed and picked up her phone. The unknown number was still there. She stared at the photograph again. Then she noticed something she hadn't seen before. In the corner of the image was a vehicle. A black SUV. The same type of vehicle she had seen near the estate that morning. Her stomach tightened. She quickly enlarged the photograph. There was no visible license plate. But someone had taken the picture deliberately. Someone wanted her to know. She sat on the edge of the bed. Who was behind all of this? And why involve her? Another message appeared. You asked the wrong questions. Isabella stared at the screen. Then another message followed. Now they're watching you too. She immediately looked toward the window. The curtains moved slightly in the breeze. For a moment, she couldn't breathe. She walked slowly toward the window and pulled the curtain aside. Nothing. Only the vast gardens and the tall walls surrounding the estate. She stepped back. Her phone vibrated once more. This time, there was only one sentence. The Moretti empire is not as safe as you think. Isabella lowered the phone. The peaceful morning suddenly felt like a distant memory. Outside, the sun continued to shine. The estate remained beautiful. The guards remained at their posts. The household continued with its routine. But Isabella now knew that something was wrong. Something dangerous was moving beneath the surface. And somewhere beyond the Moretti estate, someone was waiting for the right moment to make their next move. Isabella walked back to the mirror. She stared at her reflection. For years, she had believed that being a Moretti meant being protected. Now she was beginning to wonder if the Moretti name was actually the reason danger kept finding her. She picked up her phone again. Her finger hovered over the unknown number. She wanted answers. She wanted to know who was sending the messages. But before she could type anything, another message arrived. Don't reply. Isabella froze. Then the message disappeared. She stared at the screen in disbelief. Someone wasn't just watching her. Someone knew exactly what she was doing. The perfect morning was gone. And Isabella Moretti had a feeling that whatever had started today would not end quietly.
