Chapter 1: Sophie Denver
I turned for my phone and checked the time. I had barely thirty minutes to get up from bed and prepare for work. I set my alarm to ring exactly thirty minutes later, then pulled down my pyjama shorts and went straight to my c**t, feeling how warm and wet I was. The feeling was surreal. I giggled quietly, put on my earbuds, then switched on the porn site I had saved for today’s business. I caressed my breasts lovingly, feeling every inch of emotion flowing through me at that moment. I tilted my body towards the floor to get into a more comfortable position. I enjoyed every inch of my hands as they moved between my legs, searching through whatever that place was called. I didn’t know what exactly I was looking for, but I knew I was enjoying every bit of it and wanting more. My eyes were closing. I moaned softly and knew this was what I had really needed after the day’s activities. But whew, enough of that. I had work. I needed to concentrate. The moaning from the porn was loud, and I was completely lost in the moment. Just as I was about to reach the borderline— BOOM! My alarm banged. Oh well. What a way to start your day. Welcome to Sophie’s Diary. Hi, I’m Sophie Denver, a part-time student and a part-time worker. Most of the time, I spend my days at work, while other times, I’m at school. I’m trying to manage my adulthood well. Wait a minute. When someone hears the word adulthood, they’d probably be like, Wow, you’re so mature. But to burst your bubble, I’m just nineteen. I turned nineteen two months ago, and since turning nineteen, I’ve gotten to see a type of adulthood I’ve never experienced before. Juggling work and school at the same time isn’t exactly a fun game, if you ask me. I work at a hotel lounge as a bar attendant. I recommend wine to top clients and customers, and I get tips most of the time. That’s why I said most of my days are spent at work. Sometimes, I come back in the morning, get barely two hours of sleep, and then prepare for school. When it’s time for my shift, I take a cab from school straight to work. Whenever there’s a rush at the hotel, I prepare for school from there. Other times, I just go home straight. And when I say home, I don’t mean that home sweet home you dream of—the one where you wake up to breakfast in bed. After Mom and Dad separated, Mom became a drunkard, and it got worse to the point where the neighbors filed a complaint with a child-care service. One day, it was just my mom, my little sister, and me at home. Mom was already drunk by noon. She couldn’t even differentiate between morning and afternoon. They came into our house, saying the neighbors had filed a complaint about child abuse. Mom burst out laughing hysterically. “Child abuse? Who is abusing who? My children?” She was reeking of alcohol. The woman who came with them covered her nose and gently pushed Mom aside. Then she knelt down on one knee, took my sister’s hand, wiped her nose, and assured her that everything was going to be alright. She told her they needed to take care of Mom. From that day until now, I haven’t been able to give an account of where my mom is or where my sister is. I refused to follow them to the station because, after everything was said and done, they concluded that if no other relatives could come and take us in, we would be left at a government home for homeless children. I rushed out because I couldn’t imagine myself in that situation. I didn’t bother to find out if Kate was okay with the decision. She was just four. And Mom… Well, Mom was just Mom. Since that day, I’ve become a full adult without anyone’s guidance. I took part-time jobs and slept at my workplace before I could save enough money to rent a God-knows-what apartment. Well, at least I’ve got a place to rest my head after work. It’s better than sleeping on the streets. “Hey, Sophie! The drink is pouring out!” Edna shouted my name from the other side of the bar. That was when I realized I had been wasting a customer’s drink. I quickly wiped the counter, changed her cup, and gave her the measurement she asked for, apologizing again and again for wasting her time. She threw a bundle of money at me and smirked. “Go get yourself something to eat. You look half-dead.” She left, leaving the drink behind. Technically speaking, she was right. From a distance, you could see the eye bags that had formed under my eyes. I was technically dead. But not dead-dead. “Hey, what’s wrong with you today? You don’t seem like yourself,” Edna asked. “Well, what can I say? I think my body system is about to shut down. I couldn’t get my two hours of sleep, neither could I get myself to—” I stopped myself. “—c*m. My stupid alarm did its thing again,” I complained. Edna burst out laughing. “Girl, don’t tell me you’re being serious right now. Who in their right mind puts on an alarm while touching themselves?” “Don’t be a cunt right now,” I flared back at her. “You know a minute late to work and my salary gets deducted, so don’t act as if you don’t know the rules.” “Oh, my dear friend, you’re not getting me at all. I’m not trying to be a cunt, but girl, be realllll. Nobody gets it better without being laid.” I stared at her. “You need to get laid. That’s what I’m trying to say.” “Edna, for Christ’s sake, leave me alone!” I laughed. I shouldn’t have told her anything. “Do you know what? Forget everything I told you. I’m fine.” I took the wad of money and folded it under my skirt. “Hey, hey, hey. Do you want me to hook you up with a friend of mine?” I looked at her. “I can assure you he’ll help you forget the day’s stress. I bet you. He’s good at what he does.” Edna winked at me and tapped my shoulder before leaving for her bar stand.
