Chapter 1: Broken Bonds
Chapter 1: Broken Bonds
(Elina's POV)
The moonlight filtered through the curtains of the Alpha's private quarters, casting an ethereal glow over the room. The stillness between us was comfortable, the kind that comes after years of being tied to someone.
I traced my fingers along Rhys' muscular chest, relishing the feel of his heartbeat beneath my hand. "My Alpha," I whispered, my voice low and inviting, leaning into his warmth.
His grey eyes seared into mine, darkening with a familiar hunger as he pulled me closer. The intensity in his gaze always made me breathless. For three years, despite everything, that connection between us had never dwindled.
As his hands roamed over me, holding me like only he could, I shut out the gnawing feeling in my chest. The feeling that something was off tonight. His kisses were fervent, but there was a tension in his touch, a hesitation I couldn’t ignore.
After we lay breathless together, I felt his warmth shift away too quickly. The sudden loss of his embrace left an ache in my chest. I sat up, gripping the silk sheets to cover myself, as Rhys moved across the room.
He didn’t look at me. His broad shoulders were stiff, his movements too deliberate. He reached for something on his desk.
When he turned back, his expression was unreadable. Cold. Detached. The sight of the papers in his hands made my stomach twist.
"Elina," his voice cut through the quiet, calm yet chilling. He walked toward me like he was approaching a business deal. "I'm severing our mate bond."
The words struck me like a blade. For a moment, I couldn’t breathe. My lips parted, but nothing came out.
"Rhys," I whispered, feeling the weight of those words. "What... what did you just say?"
"You heard me." He placed the documents on the bedside table, his tone devoid of any emotion. "I’m breaking our mate bond. It’s time to end this."
I blinked rapidly, trying to process what was happening. Just moments ago, we were connected in every way two mates could be. And now...?
"Why?" My voice cracked despite my effort to stay composed.
"You were never meant to be my mate in the first place," he stated, his eyes meeting mine with an impenetrable coldness.
Those words felt like a fist to the gut. My hand gripped the silk tighter, trying to steady myself. "What are you talking about?"
Rhys' gaze didn’t waver. "It should've been Seraphina."
The sound of her name made my chest tighten further. I had been compared to her my entire life. As the adopted daughter of the Bell family, I was always the placeholder, the substitute, the outlier.
"She's back," Rhys continued, enunciating each word like he was passing judgment. "She was always supposed to be Luna, not you. I only married you because—" He stopped short, his jaw tightening.
"Go on," I said, forcing the trembling in my voice to steady. "Because what?"
"Because it was the right thing to do," he finished finally. "But it was never meant to be you, Elina. And now that Seraphina has returned..."
I couldn’t hear the rest. The blood roared in my ears, my vision blurring. Rhys had the audacity to stand here after everything we’d been through and declare me... what? A mistake?
"Seraphina..." I said bitterly, suppressing the sob clawing at my throat. "Of course. It’s always her."
He sighed, as if he were burdened by this moment. "I’m offering you three million as compensation," he said, his tone clinical, as though he were speaking to a business partner.
I laughed bitterly then, low and cold, shaking my head. "Compensation. Rhys Thorne, the Alpha King, showing me his generosity." My voice sharpened. "What? Should I thank you for this insult, too?"
His eyes flickered briefly, but he said nothing.
The heat of humiliation burned through me, but I forced myself to straighten. I wasn’t going to let him see me shatter. Not now. Not ever.
"Fine," I said, my tone clipped though my hands were trembling. "Transfer the money first, and I'll sign."
He nodded, as if he’d expected nothing less.
Two months later, I found myself standing in the cold, sterile Pack Council Office. The severance ceremony was impersonal, mechanical, the process devoid of any humanity.
The pack officer handed me the signed and stamped severance document. My hand trembled as I took it, but I clutched it tightly.
This was the end.
I stepped outside, desperate for air. The wind blew fiercely, tugging at my long coat as I walked away. My body felt like it was simultaneously numb and on fire.
Rhys' voice stopped me mid-step. "Elina."
I turned slowly, my coat fluttering in the wind, revealing the slight but unmistakable swell of my abdomen.
His eyes narrowed, a flicker of something unfamiliar in his gaze. "You're... pregnant?" He sounded almost stunned.
I tensed, my hand instinctively moving to rest protectively over my belly. "Yes," I said curtly.
For the first time, his calm facade broke. His jaw tightened, conflicting emotions flickering in his cold grey eyes. "Who’s the father?"
I met his gaze with all the defiance I could muster. "The father is dead." My voice was even, resolute.
I didn’t give him the chance to press further. I turned and walked away, each step feeling heavier than the last. The man I once loved was no longer worth my pain.
(Rhys' POV)
I watched her retreating figure, her back rigid against the harsh winds. My mind raced.
"Jasper!" I barked, my Beta appearing at my side instantly.
"Yes, Alpha?"
"Find out everything about Elina's pregnancy," I commanded, my tone sharp. "Where she's been, who she’s seen, everything."
"Understood," Jasper said, bowing slightly before disappearing to carry out my orders.
But no matter how far and wide we searched, the results were the same. She had vanished. Elina Bell was gone without a trace, taking her secrets with her.
(Elina's POV)
The years flew by, but the weight of the past never left me. I raised my twins, Ethan and Willow, in a small, quiet town far from the Onyx Pack's reach.
My world revolved around them, and they were my pride and joy. At five years old, they were unlike any children I’d ever known.
Ethan sat at the dining table, a medical textbook nearly twice his size open before him. His emerald eyes, so much like mine, burned with focus.
Willow, on the other hand, lounged on the couch, balancing her game console on her knee while tossing sarcastic quips at her twin. Her playful energy was a stark contrast to Ethan's stoicism.
A phone call from Dr. Reed snapped me out of the domestic warmth.
"Elina," his voice was thick with guilt, "I know you hate going back, but this case is... unique. And the payment they're offering—"
"Fine," I said, cutting him off. I glanced at my children, my heart squeezing. Raising them alone wasn’t easy. "But just this once."
Before leaving, I knelt before my twins, cupping their small faces in my hands.
"Promise me you'll stay in the house," I said firmly.
"Of course, Mom," Ethan said, his voice serious beyond his years.
Willow smirked. "Relax, Mom. We’re practically adults already."
As soon as the door closed behind me, they sprang into action.
(Willow's POV)
"Time to dig?" I said, already booting up my tablet.
Ethan nodded, his nimble fingers flying across the keyboard of his laptop. The picture of Alpha Rhys Thorne appeared on the screen, his face as stern and commanding as ever.
"Hello, Daddy," I whispered mockingly, grinning at the image. The resemblance was there, clear as day.
Beside me, Ethan frowned, his sharp mind running through possibilities. "So, this is the man who abandoned us?"
"Yup," I said, popping the ‘p’. My grin widened. "Looks like he’s in for a little surprise."
