Chapter 1: A Witness to Danger
David had always prided himself on his ability to stay out of trouble. As a successful businessman, he had built a life that was predictable, safe, and stable. He lived in a well-appointed apartment in a good neighborhood, drove a reliable car, and always made sure to follow the rules.
But all of that changed one night when he witnessed a crime he wasn't supposed to see. It was late, and he had been walking home from a work event when he saw a group of men in dark clothing enter a nearby building. He didn't think much of it at first, but then he heard shouting and the sound of breaking glass. Curious, he decided to investigate.
As he approached the building, he saw the men coming back out, carrying bags that looked suspiciously heavy. They didn't seem to notice him at first, but then one of them turned and caught his eye. David froze, unsure of what to do. The man said something to the others in a language David didn't understand, and suddenly they were all running towards him.
David turned to run, but it was too late. They caught up to him quickly and grabbed him, holding a gun to his head. David felt a surge of fear and panic. He had never been in this kind of situation before.
"You saw too much," the man holding the gun said in a low voice. "You shouldn't have come here."
David knew that he was in trouble. He tried to reason with them, but they weren't interested in listening. It was clear that they were going to do something terrible to him.
Just then, there was a loud crash, and the men turned their attention away from David. In the chaos, he was able to break free and run for his life. He didn't know where he was going, but he knew that he needed to get as far away from the men as possible.
As he ran through the dark streets, he felt a strange sensation - like he was being followed. He turned around and saw a figure in the shadows. At first, he was scared - he didn't know who it was. But then the figure stepped forward, and David saw that it was a woman.
She was tall and athletic, with short hair and a no-nonsense expression. She was wearing a leather jacket and combat boots, and she had a gun in her hand.
"Come with me if you want to live," she said, and David realized that he didn't have any other options. He followed her down a series of alleyways and through a maze of backstreets, trying to keep up with her long strides.
Finally, they arrived at a small apartment that looked nondescript from the outside. The woman led him inside and locked the door behind them.
"I'm Jessa," she said, putting the gun down on the counter. "You're safe here."
David was still in shock from everything that had happened. He didn't know who Jessa was, or why she had saved him. All he knew was that he was alive, and he owed her his thanks.
"Thank you," he said, his voice shaking. "I don't know what I would have done without you."
Jessa gave him a small smile. "Don't mention it. It's my job."
David was confused. "Your job? What do you mean?"
Jessa hesitated for a moment, as if deciding how much to tell him. Finally, she said, "I'm a bodyguard. It's what I do."
David was surprised. He had never met a bodyguard before, let alone been saved by one.
He looked at her with newfound respect and admiration. Jessa seemed to know exactly what she was doing, and David couldn't help but feel a sense of relief knowing that he was in good hands.
"But why me?" he asked. "Why did you save me?"
Jessa's expression turned serious. "You were in danger. And it's my job to protect people who are in danger."
David felt a sense of gratitude towards Jessa. He had never been in a situation like this before, and he had no idea how to handle it. But Jessa seemed to know exactly what to do.
"Thank you again," he said, feeling slightly embarrassed at his own helplessness.
Jessa shrugged it off. "It's what I do," she repeated. "But you should rest now. You've had a long night."
David nodded, suddenly feeling the weight of exhaustion bearing down on him. He realized that he had been running on pure adrenaline for the past few hours, and now that he was finally safe, he was starting to crash.
Jessa showed him to a spare bedroom and gave him a blanket and a pillow. "Sleep well," she said, before closing the door behind her.
David lay down on the bed and closed his eyes, feeling a sense of profound gratitude towards Jessa. He didn't know what would have happened if she hadn't shown up when she did. But he knew one thing for certain - he would never forget the night that he became a witness to danger, and the woman who had saved his life.
