Chloe Park has her entire life mapped out in color-coded highlighters, and step one is graduating valedictorian of her high-stakes urban high school. The only thing standing in her way? Julian Vance—the infuriatingly relaxed prodigy who pulls top scores without breaking a sweat and takes every opportunity to test her patience. For four years, their academic war has been waged through passive-aggressive remarks and brutal grade comparisons. But when a rare reference textbook forces them to share a single copy for an AP project, their battleground shifts to the margins of the pages. What starts as a war of snarky sticky notes and sharp critiques soon reveals a surprising truth: Julian is the only person who actually understands the crushing weight of expectation Chloe carries every day. When a mutual rival attempts to undermine Chloe, Julian steps in to defend her—proving that no one gets to take her down except him. Forced to work together to transform an abandoned urban rooftop into a community garden, long nights high above the city force them to strip away their competitive armor. As the battle for top rank reaches its boiling point, Chloe and Julian must decide if beating each other is worth losing the only person who truly sees them.

Chapter 1: The Ninety-nine percent solution
The bulletin board outside the guidance counselor’s office was where high school dreams went to die, or, in Chloe Park’s case, where they were meticulously filed under Insufficient Effort. It was 7:15 AM. The hallways of Saint Jude Academy were still echoing with the hollow hum of floor polishers and the distant clatter of janitorial carts. Most seniors wouldn't arrive for another hour, but Chloe had been standing in front of the corkboard for ten solid minutes, staring at a single sheet of paper pinned under a yellow thumb tack. AP EUROPEAN HISTORY: MID-TERM PORTFOLIO GRADES Park, Chloe: 99/100 Vance, Julian: 100/100 Chloe’s thumb squeezed the strap of her canvas backpack so tightly her knuckles turned white. A ninety-nine. On a analysis of late-nineteenth-century Prussian diplomacy that had consumed three weekends, four color-coded draft passes, and a small forest's worth of sticky notes. She pulled out her phone, snapped a photo of the sheet for reference, and tapped her foot against the linoleum. Where did the point go? Was it the footnote formatting on page fourteen? Did Dr. Aris Thorne decide her critique of Bismarck’s domestic policy lacked sufficient nuances? "You're going to burn a hole through the paper if you keep glaring at it like that, Park." The voice was cool, annoyingly smooth, and entirely too close. Chloe didn't turn around immediately. She smoothed down the lapel of her blazer, took a slow, measured breath, and turned to face Julian Vance. He was leaning against the row of dark blue lockers across the hall, holding a paper cup of drip coffee from the local deli. His tie was loosened by precisely one inch—a calculated violation of the dress code that he somehow never got called out for—and his dark hair had that artfully messy look that suggested he’d rolled out of bed five minutes ago, skimmed a textbook on the subway, and casually conquered the curriculum. "I am not glaring," Chloe said, keeping her tone crisp and professional. "I am reviewing." "You've been reviewing for ten minutes," Julian replied, taking a slow sip of his coffee. He gestured toward the board with his chin. "It's a ninety-nine. Most people would celebrate. Some might even smile." "A ninety-nine means there is a flaw," she said, stepping back so he could see the full board. "A ninety-nine means room for improvement. I don't do 'room for improvement,' Vance." Julian stepped forward, his loafers making a soft sound against the tile. He adjusted his stance, looking over her head at the paper. For a fraction of a second, as he stood beside her, Chloe caught the scent of rain and cedarwood soap—a detail she aggressively pushed out of her mind. "Look on the bright side," Julian said, his lips curling into that insufferable, half-crooked smirk that made every teacher in the building hand him extra credit just for existing. "You almost had me. If you’d cited the 1878 Congress of Berlin from the original diplomatic memoirs instead of the secondary summary, you probably would have picked up that missing mark." Chloe turned her head sharply to look at him. "Dr. Thorne said secondary summaries were acceptable for Section B." "Acceptable," Julian agreed, dropping his voice slightly as if sharing a secret. "For a ninety-nine. But if you want the hundred..." He tapped his finger lightly on the paper, right over his own name, "...you go to the primary sources." "You are unbearable," she muttered, pulling her notebook tightly against her chest. "And you are predictable," he countered smoothly. "I knew you'd be standing here before the first bell. I actually placed a small wager with myself on whether you'd bring a highlighter to mark up the board." "I don't vandalize school property," Chloe said, though her hand had, in fact, hovered over her pen pocket two minutes ago. "And for the record, the semester is only half over. Valedictorian isn't decided by a single portfolio grade." "True," Julian said, straightening up and adjusting his bag over one shoulder. "It’s decided by cumulative GPA, class rigor, and faculty recommendation. All three of which I currently lead by a margin of... what was it again? Zero point zero two percent?" "Zero point zero one eight," Chloe corrected instantly. "Don't round up to make yourself feel better." Julian chuckled, a low, quiet sound that echoed faintly in the empty hall. "Right. My mistake. Wouldn't want to compromise your mathematical precision." The warning bell rang, a sharp, metallic buzz that cut through the quiet morning. Down the hall, heavy double doors burst open, and the usual flood of students began pouring in—sneakers squeaking, lockers slamming, voices overlapping in a chaotic wave of morning noise. Chloe took a step back toward her homeroom, her eyes narrowing slightly as she took in Julian's relaxed posture. "Enjoy the lead while it lasts, Vance," she said, leaning in just enough so only he could hear over the growing commotion. "Dr. Thorne assigns the capstone research topics today. Thirty percent of our final mark." Julian didn't look flustered. He simply took another sip of his coffee, his green eyes glinting with quiet amusement. "I'm looking forward to it, Park," he said, stepping aside to let a group of underclassmen pass. "Try not to stress too much over that single point. It builds wrinkles." Chloe turned on her heel and walked away before she could say something entirely un-valedictorian-like. She marched down the main corridor, her black leather flats hitting the floor with rhythmized determination. Let him smirk. Let him pretend he didn't spend late nights studying just as hard as she did. She had seen him in the library on Friday evenings when everyone else was at football games; she knew the effortless genius routine was half act, half instinct. He worked for it. He just hid it better than she did. When she reached Room 304, Dr. Thorne was already at his desk, stacking heavy leather-bound volumes beside his podium. Chloe walked in, set her planner on her desk, and opened her blue ink pen. She didn't need to look behind her to know Julian had taken his usual seat in the back row, right by the window where he could look effortlessly detached while casually dominating every class discussion. She drew a neat, double-underlined box at the top of her fresh page: CAPSTONE TARGET: 100%. The battle for top rank was far from over. In fact, as Dr. Thorne cleared his throat to address the room, Chloe had a feeling it was only just beginning.
