Chapter 14 SHAWNA STOOD AT THE edge of the marketplace. Valorie may have woken her up from her deep sleep, despite its darkness, but she couldn’t go back to sleep. So there she was, watching the merchants erect their stores, set out their goods and start the day of selling to the citizens of Vanbourne. In her pocket, she thumbed the silver locket that burned her skin. She didn’t want to sell it—the one piece of jewelry was all she had left of her previous life.
