Chapter 4 WHEN SHAWNA OPENED her eyes again, the sun was bright in the sky. It was much later than usual—strange for her to have overslept. She jerked up on her blankets and looked around. The shelter was empty—Hanzel was gone. She’d given him a place to sleep last night after sharing food together, and it had been nice to have a warm body close to hers again. Now that he was gone, she felt the strangest sense of abandonment. She stood and stretched, then glanced at the bag of food she left in the corner of her small shelter. After last night’s meal, it was empty again and today, she would have to go looking for more.
