VALORIE GLARED DOWN at where she lay on the floor. Shawna struggled against the magic that seemed to bind her like shackles and chains.
“I thought I told you to leave,” Valorie said. “I should report you to the authorities.”
“But you’re not doing that,” Shawna said.
“And how do you know I won’t do it now?” Valorie asked.
“You would have already,” Shawna replied, her heart pounding in her chest despite forcing herself to stay calm. “You would have called them right away when you heard me up here. You wouldn’t have come to see for yourself.”
Valorie nodded. “You’re right. I could have done it.”
“And you didn’t. Which means... what do you want?”
