Chapter 1: Murder
My name is Ding Yi, and I’m an ordinary police officer. I usually patrol the streets with auxiliary officers, mediate neighborhood disputes, and most often, I stop fights and break up brawls, while chasing off small-time troublemakers.
I used to think my life would go on like this—eating, patrolling, sleeping, maybe finding a wife from a family of similar standing. When I retired, I might get a small promotion, enjoy a few years of comfortable retirement, and eventually pass away under the care of my children and grandchildren. But my fate was completely changed on that day.
That day, I was patrolling the streets as usual with two auxiliary officers. As we passed by a supermarket, my phone suddenly rang. To my surprise, it was the director calling! His instructions were simple: I had to return to the station as quickly as possible.
I quickly returned to the station, barely stopping to drink water. I headed straight to the director's office. In our small white building, the director’s office was on the second floor, to the side. As I pushed the door open, I saw that there was someone else in the room. The person appeared to be in his thirties, but the police rank on his shoulders was quite surprising, making the director, sitting in his boss’s chair, seem uneasy.
When I entered, the director seemed to seize a lifeline and quickly introduced, "Xiao Ding, this is Director Yu, a leader from the municipal bureau. He’s here to ask you about something important!"
I quickly saluted the leader, straightened my posture, and put on a sincere expression, as if a devout follower had just encountered their deity.
However, the leader surnamed Yu didn’t show the so-called look of approval. He simply flipped through the black leather notebook in his hand and asked calmly, “You’re Xiao Ding, right? I’m Yu Weida. Don’t be nervous, I just have a few questions to ask you. Do you remember a middle-aged man named Li Xuefu in your jurisdiction?”
Li Xuefu? That name sounds somewhat familiar!
I thought carefully. At this moment, I had to give an answer that would satisfy the leader. Otherwise, not only would the leader be displeased, but even the director might make me regret it!
I repeated the name in my mind a few times, and suddenly, it clicked!
I actually do remember this person!
"Report, sir, I do remember this person!" I answered loudly, while also glancing toward the director. I noticed that the director's lips curved into a slight smile.
"Go ahead," Yu Weida said, still maintaining his calm demeanor as he continued flipping through the notebook, as if there was something interesting in it. Following his gaze, I noticed that there seemed to be a few photos tucked inside. However, the contents of the photos were unclear, obscured by a lot of red.
"Li Xuefu caused a scene at the community office six months ago after his public housing application was rejected. It was me and another officer who went to stop him."
Li Xuefu's family actually didn’t meet the criteria for applying for public housing. His original intention was to apply for it, and then sell his own property to invest in business.
I told them everything I knew, without adding any embellishments, because I had no idea how much Director Yu in front of me actually knew.
"Then what about Zhou Yang?" Yu Weida asked, still without any reaction. I started to doubt whether this person was messing with me.
"Zhou Yang is Li Xuefu's friend. He was also present the last time they caused a scene at the community office! The two of them even incited a few unsuspecting bystanders to join in the disturbance, but we eventually managed to talk them down."
"Mm, I see. Can you tell me your impression of Li Xuefu and Zhou Yang?"
These two are just ordinary folks from the streets. Li Xuefu has a bit of a sharp mind, while Zhou Yang is basically his lackey. But what do these two have to do with Yu Weida? Could it be that the municipal bureau is now so idle that they're investigating people like them?
"Li Xuefu and Zhou Yang are both residents of this jurisdiction. Li Xuefu is quite intelligent and knows how to make use of the resources at hand. Zhou Yang, his friend, doesn’t have much of an opinion on things. But personally, I think Li Xuefu isn’t really petty; it’s just that the pressure of life weighs heavily on him, which sometimes leads him to act in extreme ways." As soon as I finished that last sentence, I had a bad feeling, and at the same time, I saw the director furrow his brow.
I was reporting beyond my level now, and at this moment, I could only stick to the facts. I absolutely couldn’t voice my personal opinions. If I said the right thing, it could overshadow my direct leader, and if I said the wrong thing, it would cost me my direct leader’s trust! In any case, the moment I expressed my thoughts, I had already offended my own superior.
But to my surprise, Director Yu looked up at me for the first time. He closed his notebook, and with his eyes fixed on me for a moment, he suddenly asked a question that took me completely off guard!
"Given all that, do you believe Li Xuefu would kill Zhou Yang?"
A hint of mockery appeared in Yu Weida’s eyes, as if he were telling a very bad joke and waiting for me to laugh. That expression was truly unappealing!
But at that moment, the office immediately fell silent!
Li Xuefu killed Zhou Yang? If it was a murder that occurred within our jurisdiction, and the station had no information about it while the municipal bureau knew first, then it would put the director in a very difficult position!
However, if something like this had happened, the higher-ups would definitely have notified us in advance. They wouldn’t send a leader just to relay the information! So, if Li Xuefu really did kill Zhou Yang, it at least wouldn’t have happened within our jurisdiction, or even in Changbai Province!
"The occurrence of a murder is highly incidental, so I can't be certain whether Li Xuefu would kill Zhou Yang. However, based on what I know about Li Xuefu, he shouldn’t be the type to do something like that, especially to his own close friend, Zhou Yang! If he did take action, it must have meant that the situation between them was extremely unusual at the time." I carefully considered my words before slowly saying this.
Yu Weida smiled silently, as if acknowledging what I said with a slight nod. Then, he stood up, placed the black notebook aside, and glanced at the director before looking at me, almost as if he were studying our expressions.
"Mm, I understand what you're saying! All I can tell you is that Zhou Yang is dead, and right now, Li Xuefu is the prime suspect. So, how about it? As the police officer in the suspect’s jurisdiction, are you interested in assisting the provincial bureau with this case?"
As Yu Weida stood up, the director immediately followed suit. The small office stirred up a cloud of dust, and through that dust, I could see a hint of gloom beginning to form in his eyes.
Sigh, no matter what department or profession, a subordinate will always end up offending their superior due to some unexpected event. It seems like the director is already dissatisfied with me.
However, Yu Weida’s words also piqued my interest and even gave me a slight sense of unease. After all, I had only graduated from the police academy less than two years ago, and my initial ambition to become a police officer was still fresh. I always thought about fighting evil and upholding justice. So, without giving much thought to the director’s reaction, I nodded impulsively.
