Chapter 2: The Proposal

1000 Words
Arianna took a deep breath. "I don't know, Dad. But Mrs. Jenkins said we have to meet with him to discuss the details." Peter's face fell, and he looked like he'd been punched in the gut. "I don't know, Arianna. This feels wrong. We can't just go begging to some billionaire for help." Arianna understood her father's concerns, but desperation was starting to creep in. "Dad, we have to try. We can't give up on Mom." Peter sighed, his shoulders slumping in defeat. "You're right, baby. We'll do whatever it takes to save your mother." The meeting with Dickson Logan was arranged for the following day. Arianna spent the rest of the evening in a daze, her mind racing with questions and fears. What did Dickson Logan want in return for his help? Would they be able to afford his terms? And what would happen if they couldn't? As she lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, Arianna felt a sense of trepidation wash over her. She was about to enter a world of privilege and power, where the rules were different, and the stakes were higher. Little did she know, her life was about to change forever. The next morning, Arianna and her father arrived at Dickson Logan's office, a sleek, modern skyscraper in the heart of the city. They were greeted by a receptionist who looked like she belonged on the cover of a fashion magazine. "Mr. Logan is waiting for you," the receptionist said, her voice dripping with sophistication. "Please, follow me." As they walked through the office, Arianna couldn't help but feel intimidated. Everything about the place screamed wealth and power, from the marble floors to the original artwork on the walls. They were ushered into a large, opulent office, where Dickson Logan sat behind a massive desk. He looked up as they entered, his piercing blue eyes locking onto Arianna's. "Ah, Arianna," he said, his voice low and smooth. "It's a pleasure to see you again." Arianna felt a shiver run down her spine as she approached the desk. There was something about Dickson Logan that made her feel uneasy, like he could see right through her. "Dickson," her father said, his voice firm. "We appreciate you seeing us." Dickson Logan waved a hand, his expression dismissive. "Please, call me Dickson. We're not formal here." Arianna's father nodded, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Dickson, we need to discuss the terms of your proposal." Dickson Logan leaned back in his chair, a sly smile spreading across his face. "Ah, yes. The terms." Arianna felt a sense of trepidation building in her chest. What did Dickson Logan want in return for his help? And would they be able to afford the price? "I'm willing to cover the costs of your mother's treatment," Dickson Logan said, his voice dripping with condescension. "But I need something in return." Arianna's heart sank, her mind racing with worst-case scenarios. What did Dickson Logan want from her? "What do you want?" Arianna asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Dickson Logan's smile grew wider, his eyes glinting with amusement. "Oh, Arianna. I want something very simple." Arianna's heart was racing now, her senses on high alert. What could Dickson Logan possibly want from her? "I want you to marry me," Dickson Logan said, his voice low and husky. Arianna's world came crashing down around her. Marry Dickson Logan? Was he insane? But as she looked into his eyes, she saw something there that made her blood run cold. Dickson Logan was dead serious. And Arianna was trapped. Arianna felt like she'd been punched in the gut. Marry Dickson Logan? The idea was absurd, laughable even. But as she looked into his eyes, she saw a glimmer of something that made her skin crawl. "You can't be serious," Arianna said, trying to keep her voice steady. Dickson Logan leaned forward, his eyes locked on hers. "I'm dead serious, Arianna. I'll cover the costs of your mother's treatment, but you have to marry me." Arianna's mind was racing. She couldn't marry Dickson Logan, not in a million years. But what choice did she have? Her mother's life was on the line. "I need time to think," Arianna said, stalling for time. Dickson Logan smiled, his eyes glinting with amusement. "You have 24 hours, Arianna. After that, the offer is off the table." Arianna felt a cold dread creeping up her spine. She was trapped, with no way out. As they left Dickson Logan's office, Arianna's father turned to her, his eyes filled with concern. "Arianna, what are you going to do?" Arianna took a deep breath, trying to think clearly. She had 24 hours to make a decision that would change her life forever. "I don't know, Dad," Arianna said, feeling a sense of desperation wash over her. "But I'll figure something out." Her father nodded, his expression grim. "We'll figure it out together, baby." As they walked out of the office building, Arianna couldn't shake off the feeling that she was walking into a nightmare. She felt like she was trapped in a web of deceit, with no way out. The rest of the day was a blur as Arianna tried to process the events that had unfolded. She felt like she was living in a dream, a dream that was quickly turning into a nightmare. As the hours ticked by, Arianna's anxiety grew. She knew that she had to make a decision, but she was torn. Part of her wanted to refuse Dickson Logan's offer, to tell him that she wouldn't marry him even if he was the last man on earth. But another part of her, a part that was growing louder by the minute, was screaming at her to accept the offer, to do whatever it took to save her mother's life. As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the city, Arianna knew that she had to make a decision. She couldn't put it off any longer.
