Chapter 1
Daniel didn't speak loudly, but every board member standing nearby heard him.
Robert stared at the ultrasound report in Dana's hand, his face stormy.
Dana clutched the sleeve of my suit with her other hand. Her tears soaked into the crisp fabric, leaving several damp streaks.
"Quinn, don't you remember? Three months ago, you rescued me from those men harassing me in the parking lot on the east side... Then we went to a hotel..."
The surrounding noise grew louder. Several people already had their phones out, recording us.
I pulled free and was about to tell her I was a woman when I caught sight of Nancy standing in the ballroom doorway. The corner of her mouth lifted for 0.5 seconds before she forced it down.
Something was wrong.
If Dana had been acting alone, she never could've gotten into the ballroom at a private estate.
Someone had clearly staged this spectacle for a reason. Now that I was back with my family, I might as well use it to find out who was on my side and who wasn't.
I swallowed the words on the tip of my tongue and looked at Robert.
"Dad, there are too many people here. Let's talk somewhere private."
Robert studied me. Emotions I couldn't decipher churned in his eyes: disappointment, anger, and a trace of exhaustion.
"We'll go to the study."
He turned and walked away, his steps a little unsteady.
Nancy hurried over to support him. As she passed me, she lowered her voice until only I could hear.
"Quinn, your father isn't well. Don't let this get any bigger."
I paused.
Dana was still crying as two servants helped her follow the others. When she reached me, she deliberately stumbled in my direction.
I stepped aside. She fell to the floor and sobbed even harder.
"You won't even let me touch you anymore? Our baby is still inside me!"
The surrounding whispers swelled, camera flashes firing one after another.
Daniel crouched to help her up, then shook his head at me with a look of profound disappointment.
"How can you be so heartless, Quinn?"
I stared at him and suddenly smiled.
Fine. If they loved acting this much, I would give them the performance of their lives.
I followed everyone upstairs. As I passed through the foyer, I glanced down at the ultrasound report in Dana's hand.
There seemed to be a few grease stains on it.
