Chapter 1: The Wedding That Was Never About Love
Adrian Cross first looked at me like I was a stranger while I stood beside him at our wedding altar. Not after. Not before. Right there. My dress cost more than most homes. Diamonds burned at my throat while hundreds watched us with fascination. We had money and scandal. I was Sophia Laurent, daughter of a powerful man. Adrian Cross was the billionaire CEO of Cross International, brilliant, ruthless, unreachable. Together, we looked perfect. That was the joke. The Laurents controlled luxury brands and investments. The Crosses ruled technology and finance. Our families had feuded for years, so the marriage looked like peace. Only I knew better. There was no love. Not yet, anyway. That foolish “yet” mattered because I already loved him, and perhaps that was my first mistake. Three months earlier, Adrian had entered my life without warning. My father called me into his office. “Sophia, Adrian Cross wants to marry you.” I nearly dropped my tea. “Marry me?” “Yes.” I laughed. I honestly did. “Adrian Cross? The man who ignores every woman in this city?” My father did not smile. That should have warned me. “Why?” “It benefits both families.” There it was. Business. A transaction wearing a wedding veil. I understood, yet some stubborn part of me invented another possibility. Maybe the papers were wrong. Maybe his coldness was armor. Maybe a lonely man lived underneath. I wanted to believe that. So I did. When I was sixteen, my mother once told me that powerful families never married for love; they married to protect names, money, and old promises. I argued with her for an entire afternoon, convinced she had become cynical. I remember storming upstairs afterward, certain I would prove her wrong someday. Strange, the things we remember when life begins mocking us. Sitting across from my father that day, I heard her voice again. I still chose hope over experience anyway. Our first formal meeting took place at Cross International. The building suited him. Cold glass. Sharp lines. Employees moved as though one mistake might cost them everything. Everyone respected Adrian. Everyone feared him. He stood by the window, looking over the city as if he owned it. “You are Sophia Laurent.” Not a question. “Yes.” He turned. I understood the attention. He was tall, controlled, severe, with dark eyes that seemed to measure every weakness. Still, I saw something. Loneliness. Or perhaps I wanted to. “I agreed to this marriage because it benefits both families,” he said. My little fantasy cracked. “I understand.” “We need rules.” Rules. Not promises. “You will not interfere in my business. You will not ask about my personal life.” I nodded, though something inside me had already started resisting. “So what else?” His gaze held mine. “Do not expect me to love you.” The room seemed smaller. “Then why marry me?” Something crossed his face. Pain, maybe. It vanished. “Because this marriage has to exist.” Has to. Those words bothered me, but hope made danger easy to excuse. I told myself time would soften him. Mia told me otherwise. That morning, she adjusted my veil. “You do not have to do this.” “What are you talking about?” “You’re marrying a man who treats this like a board meeting.” I smiled faintly. “You don’t know him.” “I know enough.” “There is another side to him.” Mia sighed. “Or maybe you created another side because the real one hurts too much.” That stayed with me. I hated that it did. At the altar, the hall quieted. He looked calm. Too calm. He took my hand. His fingers were cold. The priest began the vows. “Adrian Cross, do you take Sophia Laurent as your lawfully wedded wife?” Adrian looked at me. For one second, something moved in his eyes. Regret. Pain. I still do not know. “I do.” Relief loosened my chest. Ridiculous, perhaps. But I thought they meant there was still a chance. When my turn came, I smiled. “I do.” Applause filled the hall. To everyone watching, our marriage had begun. What none of them knew was that Adrian had made another vow in silence. Revenge. That night, after the reception, we arrived at Cross Manor. The house was breathtaking. He was not. He dropped his coat on a chair and walked away as if the wedding were a meeting. “Today was beautiful,” I said. Nothing. “Adrian.” He turned. The look in his eyes stopped me cold. No affection. No uncertainty. Hatred. “There is something you need to know.” My smile disappeared. “What?” He approached slowly, not like a husband, but like a man meeting someone he meant to punish. “This marriage was never about love.” “I know it was arranged, but—” “No.” His voice sharpened. “You understand nothing.” “Then explain it.” He stared at me. “I did not marry you because joining our families benefits business.” He paused. “I married you because of what your family did to mine.” I froze. “What are you talking about?” “Your father destroyed my family.” “That is not true.” “That is what you want to believe.” He stepped closer. “For years, I watched the Laurent family tear mine apart. We lost everything.” I shook my head. “My father would never do that.” “You have no idea who your father really was.” His certainty frightened me. “Then why marry me?” His answer came immediately. “Revenge.” One word. That was enough. The room closed around me. “I want you to feel what my family felt. Every pain.” My chest tightened. “So I was only a weapon?” His expression never softened. “You are the daughter of the man who ruined my life. You deserve this.” My eyes burned, but I refused to cry. “Why didn’t you tell me before?” “If I had, would you have married me?” Silence. We both knew. No. He turned away. “You wanted a husband. You have one legally.” Then he faced me again. His eyes were merciless. “But never make the mistake of thinking you will get love from me.”
