"Whatever it is, I'm ready. I must finish my mission" Janet said to herself.
The footsteps grew louder, and Janet listened intently. Holding her breath for a while. She braced herself and cautiously began to slow-walk in the direction of the sound, only to discover that a neighbour had just bought a new speaker and was testing the sound with an action movie. She exhaled, but her mind was still pounding. "My goodness. That was close. I need to quickly catch up with David and Ayo, but before then, I need a new identity."
---
A New Identity
Janet regrouped with David and Ayo at the safe house, she spread out the documents on the table, her new identity taking shape before her eyes. "From now on, I'm Janet James," she said, her voice steady. "I'll be working with JTK Solutions, the outsourcing cleaning company of Williams Holdings. After a few months, I'll work my way to be posted to Williams Holdings."
David frowned, studying the details. "And you're sure this will work?"
Janet nodded. "It's a common enough story. No one will question it."
Ayo pointed to the address on the document. "With these, you'll have access to the information we need."
Janet took a deep breath, her resolve hardening. "I'll start tomorrow. The sooner I get in, the sooner we can bring him down."
David looked at her, his eyes filled with worry. "Just promise me you'll be careful."
Janet met his gaze, her expression unwavering. "I promise."
Months Later...
Janet stood before the towering corporate headquarters of Williams Holdings, her well-fitted janitor uniform clinging to her frame. She cast her mind back to St. Mary's Hospital, where her father Mr. James Adekunle lay, helpless and impoverished, in a cramped room with peeling paints, and a single window that let in a ray of sunlight- a sharp contrast to his former lush office.
His eyes were dim, and veins protruded from his weakened body. The thick smell of disinfectants and sweat hung in the air. Her heart ached as she looked at her father.
Mr. Adekunle struggled to place his frail hands on his daughter, and with a dim but cracked voice he uttered " Janet my daughter, be strong. Your mother and I have done our best. It's time to go. This pain is too much. It is unbearable. Please, take care of your brother. Remember whose daughter you are..."
Janet's eyes welled up with tears " He will pay for this Dad; he will surely pay. Even if it's the last thing I do..."
Her father's gaze filled with sadness and hopelessness" Janet, you are just a child, what can you do? that man is ruthless, mean and dangerous. Leave him to God. Vengeance is of the Lord. Not ours. If it pleases God that I join my ancestors for showing kindness to my fellow man, then, so be it" Her father lamented..." Kneel, let me bless you..."
As she knelt, her father prayed, " Janet, you are my first child. Today, I bless you. You’ll rise above your equals. You’ll be very great. You’ll go past my limitations and that of your mother's. Wisdom will be your companion. You'll live to fulfil your purpose. Your life will not be cut short. I bless you this day .” “Amen!" Janet responded.
No sooner had the prayer finished than he began to cough uncontrollably. Janet screamed “Dad, Dad, Doctor, Doctor " Dr. Olaitan rushed in with David "What is it? Give me a moment," he said as he reached for his stethoscope. Placing one part on Mr. James' chest and the other on his ears, he observed. Then he paused and shook his head as he turned to Janet.
"What is it, Doctor?" David asked urgently "I'm afraid David" Dr. Olaitan replied, “Afraid of what, Doctor?" Janet grabbed his arm “He is... He is" the doctor stutters, struggling to find the word "He is what?" David, tears rolling down his eyes, screams in a loud voice "Nooooooooo!"
Janet stood there- cold, speechless, and dumbfounded, her heart raced, and her eyes turned red. The world around her seemed to darken as she snapped back to the present day, her hand on her chest. She whispered, wiping away her tears, "Otunba Williams, you will surely pay for this. I will damn the consequences. If I perish, I perish, but I will make sure you are brought to your knees."
With unwavering determination, she steps into Willaims Towers ready for the battle ahead.
At the Reception...
As Janet approached the reception, the tall glass door spread open on its own accord. The reception area was sleek and modern, with a large glass executive table, a set of settees for guests, a rug adorned with a tall natural flower and a rich scent by the side, a minimalist art piece, and the company’s Vision, Mission, and Core values boldly inscribed on the wall. The big round logo cannot be ignored.
“Good morning, Ma. My name is Janet James, and I’ve been posted here by JTK Solutions as a janitor,” Janet introduced herself to the Receptionist, with a soft voice; her presence modest and unpretentious.
The receptionist nodded, “Welcome to Williams Holdings” taking the documents and scanning them briefly. "Please, make yourself comfortable while I get through to the office manager," she said, pointing her hands to the guest area as she calls the Office manager’s intercom. “Hello Sir, there is a young lady here from JTK Solutions”. She turned to Janet. “Please, hold, the Office Manager will be with you shortly”
“OK Ma. Thank you” Janet responded. Her heart pounding in her chest. “If I can secure this position, I will have access to bring Otunba down.” She thought"
After what felt like an eternity, a cute man in a suit showed up at the reception. "This is Mr. Ade, the office manager," she said. Mr. Ade looked Janet up and down, his expression unreadable. "So, you're Janet James?" he asked.
Janet nodded, keeping her eyes lowered. "Yes Sir. I've been posted here by JTK Solutions."
Mr Ade studied her for a moment longer before nodding. "Alright. We need competent and reliable hands here. Can we count on you to deliver excellent service?" “Yes Sir, I will do my best. I’m good at what I do” Janet affirmed. “Very well then, come with me to the HR department for your documentation and onboarding” Mr. Ade said with a welcoming smile. Janet's heart leapt with relief. " Thank you, Sir."
Janet followed him as they walked to the HR department; her hands steady despite the excitement bubbling inside her.

Later That Night
Janet sat in the small, dingy apartment she had rented under her new identity. She pulled out her phone, sending a quick message to David and Ayo. "I'm in." David's reply came almost immediately. "Be careful." Ayo's message followed. "Good luck. We're counting on you."
As Janet was about to put the phone away, to retire for the night, a notification came into her phone. She opened the SMS that read... “Dear Janet James, my name is Lucy, from the HR Department. We noticed some irregularities in your documentation. You need to come to the HR Department first thing tomorrow morning. Regards”
Janet now uneasy. “What inconsistency? What did they find? But I thought I covered my tracts…well I guess I will have to wait till morning to find out” She said as she rests her head on a soft pillow.
