Chapter 4

*Marie's POV* When the bell rang for lunch, I quickly packed my things. Had to be on the spot quickly. Had promised the new girl Lisa she could sit by us. Have a feeling she'll fit in, even if she's human. You see, I'm a werewolf, as are about a little over half of the school's students. Daughter of Beta for Fenri's sons' pack. But my father's position is not locked. Normally, a beta is the right hand of an Alpha, and my father also holds that role, but he was originally only a Gamma. A Gamma is the 4th highest rank. Right after Beta. And he only became a beta because the original beta lost his life in a fight against rogues. But that means he can be challenged, or be demoted to gamma again. Something that doesn't seem to worry my father in the least. Sometimes I even think he hopes to become Gamma again. When I arrive with my tray at the table, I am first. A bit lonely, but I had to be here early, so Lisa couldn't believe I had stood her up. Can't wait to introduce her to some of the others. Just hope they can accept a human in our midst. If someone stays across, they get to order with me. A quick slap in the back pulls me out of my thoughts. "Hey, the earth is calling Marie." says a voice, next to me. Quickly turns my head to the side. The biggest smile spreads across my face. Recognized the voice, of course. It belongs to my best friend Oscar. "HEEEEEEYYY." Can I get the answer again? The voice sounds a little more surprised than I'd like to admit. A mischievous grin was painted on his face. "Whoah, how far away were you just? You didn't even notice when I sat next to you, and from the surprise in your voice, you didn't hear a word I said either.” Can feel the heat in my cheeks spreading, while a gentle sigh escapes my lips. "Sorry Oscar, you're probably right. Although I'm not much for admitting that fact.” Admitting to Oscar that he was right might be a bit of a gamble. It shouldn't bother him. Which is a potential risk with him. My inner dialogue makes me pull on the smiley face even more. And you could see that the cocky smile that had settled on Oscar's face transformed into curiosity. Opted instead to change the subject, and hope to drag it out a bit, and let his curiosity pique a bit. Before I let him vent about it, and however disappointing it would be when he finds out how boring my thoughts really were. "So what was it you were going to say when you came?" Oskar seemed to consider whether to allow my change of subject, and let it go. At least for now. "Yes, now you have to listen." The tension in his voice literally quivered as he launched into what was most likely going to be another one of his gossipy tales. "A new student just started at school" "that in itself is nothing new." I interrupt, sighing a little. “No, but listen now. Stefan accompanied her to her first class. And BOTH alphas,” with a heavy emphasis on the word both. ”seemed interested in her. The stories are wild. From her being a wolf from a hostile pack, to her being a sickly jealous ex-escapade of Stefan's." Now I could no longer hold the mask, the juice I was about to drink flew out of my nose. I started laughing out loud. Oskar's reaction didn't make it any easier for me to stop laughing either. He looked like a cross between a offended girl, a pop girl and someone who had a hard time keeping the mask. After a while, however, he started to giggle a little. As he caressed my face, I still had juice running down my face. Which I quickly wiped away. At the same moment, I recognized a smell behind me, it is none other than Stefan. "Hey!! Stephen. Hear the rumor mill taking advantage of you in the cruelest way again.” I say it with a bit too cocky a pep in my voice. Because Stefan and I almost grew up together, I can be allowed a little more than the wolves. I turned around so I was facing Stefan's. He stands slightly bent forward and with a body cast like a Greek god. If it wasn't for the fact that I grew up with him, and he's the closest thing I have to a brother, I'd be drooling and going for it. But in the split second I'd had that thought a few years ago, I'd shut it down. Immediately. "Don't believe everything you hear." Stefan's voice was deep and serious. But in no way dangerous. His gaze adjusts to Oscar, who sits speechless and looks a little embarrassed down at the table. It didn't take me many seconds to catch that Stefan had clearly heard Oscar's rendition of the rumor mill at school, and didn't approve of the results. "Don't worry Stefan, I know those rumors are completely wrong," I quickly said. "Nice to hear your thoughts about me are not so low yet." Stefan said as he blinked one eye. “Hahaha, my thoughts about you are exactly that low. But I met the so-called jealous ex-lover this morning,” I said with a confident tone and appearance. Suddenly, Stefan's posture and facial expression changed to be more serious and curious. “You have spoken to her!” Honestly, it sounded more like a statement than a question. My gaze was still held by Stefan's as I gave a curt nod of my head, followed by, “So the rumors aren't completely wrong on that one?” "What do you mean Marie?" exclaimed Stefan quickly, but with a tone of rent that told me to choose my words a little more carefully now. "I just mean that I think the rumors started on the basis of a wonder about what might create an interest in you and possibly also Kian." After that announcement, Stefan looked a little more thoughtful, as if he was considering how much he wanted to confide in me or not. In exorably, it didn't look like he was ready to make a decision about it yet. But seemed to have to say something then…..
