CHAPTER TWENTY NINE 3:35 p.m. Ocean City, Maryland Luke watched Swann out of the corner of his eye. All the man seemed to do was watch TV and drink beer. That’s what he’d been doing when Luke had last left here. Luke didn’t relish the idea of Swann holing up in this place the rest of his life—he’d like to get him back out into the world somehow. The television was gigantic and its flickering screen commanded the vast spaces of Swann’s high-ceilinged penthouse apartment. There were no other lights on in the room, and the apartment’s big windows were oriented east toward the ocean. The sun set early this time of year, so the light of day was bleak and fading.
