CHAPTER THIRTY 5:35 p.m. Eastern Standard Time Blue Ridge Mountains, Virginia The sun had gone down. Night was here. The assault team closed in. Twenty men came in five armored SUVs. Two electronics experts blew the high-voltage fencing that surrounded the complex. Eight men approached the entrance to the bunker from the front, five through the woods on either flank. Two men, the team leaders, hung back at the cars as a viewing and command post. There was a helicopter circling overhead, with two sharpshooters leaning out the bay doors. The men all wore Kevlar body suits and helmets. Two men crossed quietly to the bunker entrance. The door was heavy metal, double-steel, but it wouldn’t hold up to C4 plastic explosive. It looked more like a security door on a Parks Department utility
