I get my lunch out my locker, put the books I wont need away and grab the ones that I will and head to the cafeteria.
I meet Poppy waiting for me at the entrance. "Lex do you mind if I sit with to you at lunch?" "Not at all Poppy" We head in and settle at a table that could seat four so we have place for our bags. Poppy seems to also bring her own lunch she has a ham and cheese sandwich, an apple and a fruit juice. Looks delicious. I take my salad out and add the salad dressing and start eating.
"So Lex what made you move here?" "My brother Jared got a job offer to work at The Raiders Bike Shop so we moved." I shrugged my shoulders " What a small world that's my brother Damien's shop, he is also the President of the bike club. What about your mom and dad they move here to?" No, my mom passed away when I was fifteen. The ole Sperm Donor left right after the funeral to be with his other family that he apparently had for years. So it's really just been Jay and I." I hated telling our story, people always look at us with pity and we dont like being pitied. Poppy didn't though she looked absolutely outraged. " That fcking pr*ck. I am really glad you have your brother." I was really glad.
"What about you Poppy what's your story?" Poppy got this really sad look in her eyes. "Well, my parents are really stupid rich, they are never home. I think this time they've gone on a cruise around the world. Anyway, we grew up with nannies and sitters so it's just been Damien and I. Two years ago they gave money to Damien to start his shop, he worked really hard and paid them back last year. He didn't want to "owe" them you know. After he paid them back Damien asked me to move with him to a house that's about seven minutes from the shop. I said yes immediately, knowing Damien had already spoken to the parents.I couldn't have been happier, there was no love in that house. To be honest it's also freeing being out of that gated community, always felt like I was trapped, in a prison of sorts. We are both much happier." "It makes me happy to know things are better for you and your brother. If you dont mind me asking why haven't I met any of your other friends?" "I dont mind I'd rather be honest upfront. As I've stated my parents are wealthy, like could buy the country wealthy. Damien and I have never thought ourselves better than other because of it. We do not go around throwing our weight to bully or humiliate people that are below our so called station. We look deeper, we look at how people treat others to see if we want to be associated or friends with them. So as you can imagine it was assumed that I would be friends with the so called elites, being from a wealthy family and all but, I never could neither could Damien. They bully people and humiliate them all the time. When I decided I didn't want to be their friend they kinda ostracized me and started turning their bullying on me. Made sure no one wanted to be my friend because they would bully them to. I haven't told Damien yet and I honestly plan to but I'm really worried what my brother will do. He is very protective of me and I dont want him going to jail for me. It's has been four years of their torment." Poppy sniffed and whipped her tears away. "Lex, I know we just met, but they will start bullying you to get you to stop being my friend. I cannot put you through that. This has been really the best day I've had in a long time. Thank you. I will leave you now." Poppy looked so defeated and sad. I appreciated her honesty but, did she really think I was going to let her go and not be her friend. She's crazy. She is a good person and there are not many people like that around. Before she could leave I stood up and grabbed her hand and pulled her into a tight hug. Took Poppy awhile to return the hug and poor Poppy started crying. I cannot imagine the loneliness, mine was self done hers was forced, and on top of that this sweet soul was bullied. I'll find out more what they did soon but, I need to first reassure her I'm not going anywhere. "Poppy where were you going? I know you said they will bully me but Poppy trust me I know how to take care of myself. It is my decision that I want to be friends with you. No one will make that choice for me. Sit down Poppy. I wont take no for an answer" " Oh my gosh thank you so much Lex I cannot explain how happy I feel. Can I get you number?" "Sure give me your phone." she gave me her phone and I gave her mine we typed in the numbers and exchanged them back. The bell rang signaling the end of lunch.
The rest of the school day went well until it was time to go home.
