CHAPTER ELEVENSaturday. Sitting in Marvia Plum’s bed he phoned Mother. She was puttering happily around the house. She wasn’t zoned out in front of the TV. She was reading this morning’s Contra Costa Times. Of course she would be all right. She had a lot of things to do. She didn’t need him at home. A miracle! Marvia pulled back the curtains. The storm front had passed. Another might be on course behind it, bringing in desperately needed rain from over the Pacific. For all you could tell, the storm had drenched the Abraham Lincoln and kept her jets and choppers stowed on the hangar deck.
