Chapter 1
Something was terribly wrong Claire pov Something was very wrong. I could feel it deep down inside me as I stared at my favourite drink - a vanilla iced latte loaded with sweet cream. The delicious smell that usually made my mouth water was soured by a bitter, unpleasant tang. I took a sip and my tongue recoiled at the awful taste. This treasured morning ritual was tainted, filling me with a sense of dread. My phone vibrated on the table. It was a text from my best friend Sasha: 'Good morning, your royal highness. I have your schedule ready.' I couldn't help but smile a little at her sarcastic way of addressing me. But the smile quickly faded when Sasha suddenly burst into the room without warning. "You almost gave me a heart attack!" I exclaimed, clutching my chest. An unsettling tightness gripped me, my heart pounding far louder than that small scare warranted. Sasha raised one arrogant eyebrow. "Oh please, it'll take much more than that to take down the mighty Luna of our pack." I rose from my seat, eyeing the ruined latte uneasily. "It tasted... off this morning. Bitter." "Probably just the weather acting up," Sasha said with a dismissive wave of her hand. "Now come on, we need to join Logan with the pup training sessions." The mention of my beloved Alpha's name made my heart flutter. "Of course," I replied with a dreamy smile. Sasha pretended to gag. "You two are absolutely nauseating with your lovey-dovey scents." We made our way down the elaborately decorated hallways of the Vermont pack den. Regal portraits of my ancestors stared down at us from the walls. I paused in front of a painting of my parents, the ever-present ache of their loss clutching my heart. "Hey there, Sundrop." Logan's voice was warm and rich like melted chocolate. I turned and melted into his strong embrace, inhaling his comforting wolf scent. "I missed you," he murmured affectionately into my hair. I squeezed him tightly. "Logan, you just saw me six hours ago." A playful gleam danced in his dark eyes. "Far too long. Why don't we sneak away for a private run together?" His suggestive tone ignited that familiar spark of desire within me. But the discomfort in my chest flared up again, giving me pause. "Actually, my chest has been aching. I should rest after we're done with pup training." Concern creased Logan's brow as he pulled back, scanning me carefully. "Should I call the doctor?" "No, no, I'm just stressed," I assured him with what I hoped was a convincing smile, trying to brush off the nagging sense that something was seriously amiss. When we arrived at the training grounds, the rambunctious pups of our pack immediately swarmed us with youthful exuberance. In the midst of the cheerful chaos, one girl caught my eye - young Mai, staring at me with an intensity that sent a chill down my spine. "Is something wrong, Mai?" I asked, forcing a smile despite my growing unease. The pup's face scrunched up. "You smell really weird. Like, really bad, weird." A cold knot formed in the pit of my stomach as another pang of strange tightness gripped my chest. I steadied myself, and Logan was instantly at my side, his concern evident. "I'm fine," I lied again, unable to stop my gaze from drifting back to Mai. In that fleeting moment, her expression morphed into one of pure loathing - but not directed at me. At Sasha. A sliver of doubt took root, casting its shadow over the seemingly joyful scene before me. The dark promise of secrets and deceptions yet to be uncovered slithered through my mind like a serpent's hiss. And then, a terrifying thought blazed through me with sickening clarity: What if the one person I trusted most was secretly poisoning me? I couldn't breathe. The world started spinning as I clutched at my chest, doubling over in agony. Logan's frantic voice faded into the distance, consumed by a roaring in my ears. Dark spots danced across my vision, and I tasted a metallic tang of blood as I crumpled to the ground. The last thing I saw was Sasha's face, twisted into a snarl of pure hatred aimed directly at me. Everything faded into darkness. An endless void of nothingness surrounded me as panic gripped my very soul. Was I dead? Has the poisoning finally taken its toll? Sasha's twisted, hateful snarl was the last thing burned into my mind before the blackness consumed me. Then, like a flickering candle in the abyss, consciousness slowly returned. My eyelids feel heavy, but I forced them open to blinding light and muffled voices. "...she's waking up! Claire? Claire, can you hear me?" Logan's frantic voice pulled me further from the void. I blinked sluggishly, trying to focus on his concerned face hovering above me. "Wh-What happened?" My voice was a harsh rasp. "You collapsed at the training grounds." Logan's arms were wrapped around me, cradling me against his chest. His dark eyes shone with barely contained panic and guilt. "I'm so sorry, my love. I should have listened and called the doctor immediately." My head lolled as I tried to take in my surroundings. We were still at the training grounds, the pups gathered around us with wide, frightened eyes. Sasha knelt beside Logan, her expression one of feigned worry that made my insides churn. "Are you alright? What's wrong?" Her sugary tone grated on my nerves, the undercurrent of malice I'd sensed before still lingering. I opened my mouth to speak, to voice my newfound suspicions, but a violent coughing fit racked my body instead. I clutched at my chest, doubling over as each tortuous spasm triggered fresh bolts of agony. When it finally subsided, my hand came away smeared with crimson. Blood. Logan let out a guttural growl, pulling me tighter against him protectively. "That's it, I'm getting the healer. Sasha, help me get her inside." "Of course, right away." Sasha moved to help lift me, but a feral snarl ripped from my throat as soon as her hands touched me. "Don't...touch me!" I rasped, recoiling from her grasp. The metallic scent of my own blood filled my nostrils, reigniting that dark whisper of doubt. Sasha recoiled, hurt flickering across her features before her brows knitted in concern. "Claire? What's wrong?" My chest heaved with ragged breaths as I shook my head weakly. "I don't...I can't..." Darkness crept in at the edges of my vision again, the roaring in my ears growing louder. "Claire? Claire!" Logan's panicked voice was the last thing I heard before I slipped back into unconsciousness. When I awoke again, I found myself in the healer's chamber with Logan keeping vigil at my bedside. The deep circles under his eyes told me I'd been out for some time. "There you are, my Sundrop," he murmured, cradling my face in his calloused palm. "You made me worried sick." "Logan...what's happening to me?" I wheezed, my throat parched and raw. His jaw tightened, that haunted look of guilt resurfacing. "The healer, she...she says you've been poisoned. Slowly, over time with some kind of toxic substance." The confirmation of my worst fear leeched what little colour remained from my face. "Poisoned? By who? How?" Logan shook his head helplessly. "I don't know, but I swear on my life I'll find out. I won't let anything happen to you." Despite his reassuring words, my heart plummeted into the pit of my churning stomach. Because at that moment, I knew exactly who was behind this despicable act. My best friend. My trusted confidant. Sasha. How could she do this to me? The rage, hurt, and bitter betrayal cascaded through me in sickening waves. But why? What could possibly drive her to such depths of depravity? Logan must have sensed my inner turmoil. "Claire? What is it, love?" I opened my mouth to confess my horrifying realisation, but a movement in the corner of the room seized my attention. There, shrouded in shadows, a figure stepped into the sliver of light filtering through the window. It was Sasha, her face twisted into that same expression of malevolent hatred I'd seen right before I lost consciousness. A bone-chilling chuckle reverberated from her as she lifted a dagger, the blade glinting menacingly. "Sorry, Claire," she purred with sickening nonchalance. "But I can't let you ruin everything now, not when I'm so close." My blood turned to ice in my veins as her true intentions finally clicked into place. Before I could utter a warning, she lunged forward with feral speed, the dagger aimed straight for my heart. Logan reacted with lightning reflexes, throwing himself in front of me just as Sasha's dagger thrust forward. There was a sickening squelch as the blade plunged into his back. "No!" I screamed in horror as Logan crumpled to the floor, blood rapidly pooling beneath him. Sasha snarled in frustration but didn't hesitate, raising the dagger again to finish the job. I frantically tried to move, to get between them, but my limbs felt like lead weights from the lingering poison in my veins. At the last second, a blur of movement flashed across the room and Sasha went flying backwards with a pained yelp. Alpha Brianna appeared, having kicked Sasha away from Logan's fallen form. "Guards! Seize her!" Brianna roared. Several burly wolves rushed into the room, grabbing Sasha and restraining her as she thrashed wildly. Her crazed eyes met mine, full of venomous hatred. "This isn't over, Luna b***h! I'll make your life a living hell for stealing Logan from me!" she spat. My stomach churned as the pieces fell into place. Sasha had been my friend since we were pups, but she had always carried a torch for Logan too. I never dreamed her jealousy would twist into such homicidal rage. My attention snapped back to Logan as a pained groan escaped his bloodied lips. I scrambled off the bed, ignoring the healer's protests to stay still. "Logan, Logan stay with me!" I pleaded, cradling his head in my lap as Brianna barked orders for the medics. Logan's eyes fluttered open, his gaze struggling to focus on my face. "Claire...are you...okay?" Tears streamed down my cheeks as I gripped his hand tightly. "You fool, why did you do that? Now I could lose you too..." The ghost of his usual roguish grin flickered across his lips. "Anything...for my Sundrop..." I leaned down, pressing my forehead to his as the medics swarmed around us. "Just hang on, my love. Don't you dare leave me. That's an order from your Luna." Despite the chaos and Sasha's muffled screams as she was dragged away, in that moment it was just the two of us. I clung desperately to Logan, silently begging the Moon Goddess to spare his life. If I lost him... I didn't know how I would go on. The rest would need to wait - finding out how Sasha poisoned me, dealing with her betrayal, and facing the fallout of her treacherous actions. Right then, all that mattered was Logan's rasping breaths against my cheek as the medics fought to save him. My world had been shattered. But maybe, just maybe, the blinding light of our love could lead me out of this darkness.
