The Cabin

As Annika and Kai made their way back into the city, Annika couldn't help but notice that she had no idea where they were headed. She had been so focused on the excitement of their discovery that she had forgotten to ask. "Hey, so where are we going right now, and how are we going to get to this cabin?" she asked, finally breaking the silence. Kai's eyes scanned the surroundings, his gaze sharp and focused. "I'm taking care of the transportation part," he replied. "That's where we're headed to." Annika nodded, trusting Kai's instincts. They continued to walk for another twenty minutes, their conversation limited to occasional glances and unspoken understanding. Finally, they arrived at a storage unit facility. The building was old and worn, its paint chipped and peeling. Annika couldn't help but feel a sense of unease as they approached. Kai and Annika cautiously approached the storage unit, their eyes scanning the surrounding area for any signs of the Moonlit Order. As they drew closer, Kai pulled out a set of keys. "You're not going to murder me and hide my body here, are you?" Annika joked, trying to lighten the tense atmosphere. Kai turned to her, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "No, I wouldn't put you in this storage unit. This one holds a different secret already." Annika's curiosity was piqued. She couldn't wait to see what secrets Kai had hidden away. Kai lifted the rolling door of the storage unit and inside was a vehicle hidden by a cover. He walks in, grabs the corner of the cover, and pulls it off, revealing a vintage car hidden beneath a layer of dust and cobwebs. Annika's eyes widened in surprise. "What is this?" she asked, her voice filled with excitement. Kai grinned. "It's a 1969 Ford Mustang. I've been working on it in my spare time." Annika's eyes sparkled with admiration. "It's beautiful," she said. Kai nodded. "I think so too. It's the perfect getaway car. Let’s hope she runs." As Kai and Annika approached the car, Kai got into the driver's seat while Annika slid into the passenger seat. They closed the doors, and Kai inserted the key into the ignition. He turned the key, but the engine failed to start. Annika's heart sank, and she couldn't help but feel a pang of disappointment. "Ummm... so you did finish working on it, right?" she asked, trying to hide her concern. Kai's face flushed slightly. "Yes, I did. But it's been sitting for a few months, so it might take a couple of tries to get her up and running." With renewed determination, Kai turned the key again. This time, the engine roared to life. Relief washed over Annika and Kai as they heard the familiar sound of the car starting. "Let's get out of here," Kai said, his voice filled with excitement. As they pulled out of the parking lot, Annika felt a surge of adrenaline. They were finally on the move, their escape from the Moonlit Order underway. As they drove down the road out of the city, Annika couldn't help but start going through every compartment in the front seat. She was curious about this mysterious car and the secrets it held. Suddenly, she found a small shoebox tucked away in the glove compartment. With a mischievous grin, she pulled it out and opened it. Inside, she found a collection of cassette tapes. "Hey now! What do we have here?" she exclaimed, her voice filled with excitement. Kai glanced at her, a knowing smile on his face. "A little throwback to the good old days," he replied. Annika laughed. "I love retro stuff. I wonder what's on these tapes." She pulled one out and read the label: "80s Hits." "Perfect," Annika said. "It’s Hooked on a Feeling by Blue Suede! Let's turn this up!" As Annika sang along to "Hooked on a Feeling," Kai couldn't help but crack a smile. He had tried to maintain a serious demeanor, but her infectious enthusiasm was contagious. He found himself tapping his foot and humming along, his worries and fears momentarily forgotten. Kai smiled and let out a small laugh. Annika noticed and smiled back. "What's so funny?" she asked. Kai shrugged. "Nothing. Just... even with a murderous, powerful secret werewolf society chasing after us, you still somehow manage to find some little moment of joy." He briefly looks at her with a wide smile and back at the road. Annika's heart warmed at his words. She knew that he was right. Even in the face of danger, she had found a way to find joy and hope. And for that, she was grateful. As they drove down the winding road, Annika and Kai kept a low profile, avoiding any populated areas that might have cameras. They wanted to remain as inconspicuous as possible, knowing that the Moonlit Order was likely searching for them. It was dusk by the time they turned down a hidden dirt road leading into a heavily wooded area. The road was narrow and overgrown, barely visible from the main road. After driving for what seemed like an eternity, they finally pulled up to a secluded cabin. Kai parked the car in a small barn next to the cabin, ensuring that it was hidden from view. "Wait here," Kai said to Annika as he stepped out of the car. Annika nodded, her heart pounding with anticipation. She trusted Kai, but she couldn't shake the feeling of unease that had been with her since they left the city. Several minutes later, Kai returned, his expression serious. "Sorry about making you wait," he said. "I just had to make sure the cabin was clear and safe." Annika nodded, relieved that he had taken the time to check. As they walk out of the barn, he drapes the car with a giant tan canvas tarp. He walks up to Annika and puts his hand on the small of her back. “Okay, let me show you around.” Kai’s hand on her back triggers flashbacks of Annika’s dream, but she quickly shakes them off and keeps walking. They walk around the side of the house to the front. They walk up the steps leading to the front door. Kai opened the front door; he had turned on every light as he cleared each room, so the cabin was well-lit with warm lights all around. Inside, the cabin was cozy and inviting. The living room was furnished with a comfortable sofa and a wood-burning fireplace, but luckily, the cabin had heating and air conditioning as well. A large window offered a view of the forest outside. The kitchen was small but functional, with a stove, refrigerator, and a few basic appliances. Overall, the cabin was a simple and charming place, perfect for a quiet retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city. It was a place where Annika and Kai could relax, recharge, and plan their next move. “I turned the heat on just a few minutes ago, so it’s going to take a bit to get warm in here, but there are some pretty warm blankets on the couch if you get cold. Just make yourself at home, okay.” Kai says. "Is it okay if I check out the upstairs?" Annika asked, her curiosity piqued. Kai nodded with a reassuring smile. "Yeah, take a tour. But there's only one bedroom, so the room is yours, and I'm sleeping on the couch." He winked, a playful glint in his eyes. Upstairs, Annika found a single bedroom furnished with a queen-size bed and a dresser. The bedroom had a large window that looked out onto the treetops. It was already dark, and the moonlight illuminated the forest, creating a serene and peaceful atmosphere. Annika was exhausted and the bed looked so inviting that she couldn't resist. She fell back onto it, letting out a sigh of relief. She closed her eyes for a moment, taking in the beauty of the natural surroundings, something so different from the bustling city. Flashes of her dream started creeping in, but this time, Annika didn't fight them. She let herself get carried away by the vivid images and sensations. She opened her eyes to find Kai leaning in the doorway, propped up by his arm, his hand touching the top of the doorframe. "You thinking about me again?" he smirked, raising an eyebrow in interest. Annika was embarrassed and shocked. Is it possible that he knew about the dream? She had been so lost in it, so unaware of her surroundings. Kai chuckled. "I'm just messing with you," he said, his eyes twinkling. "I have a few things for dinner on the table. It's nothing fancy, but I figured you might be hungry." Annika's face relaxed. She had been so caught up in her embarrassment that she hadn't noticed that her stomach was growling. "Thanks," she said with a slight smile. She followed Kai into the kitchen, where he had set out a simple meal of sandwiches and fruit. They sit down at the table and start eating and talking. "So, what do you think about being a werewolf so far?" he asked. Annika smiled. "It's... a lot to take in," she admitted. "I'm still getting used to it." "Me too," Kai replied. "It's like discovering a whole new side of yourself." "I have so many questions," Annika said. "How do we control our transformations? What are our limits? Can we really heal from any injury?" Kai chuckled. "I don't have all the answers, but I can tell you a few things. We can control our transformations to some extent, but it takes practice. Our healing abilities are incredible, but they're not limitless. And as for our limits, we're still discovering them." Annika nodded, her eyes filled with curiosity. "I want to learn everything I can about being a werewolf," she said. Kai smiled. "We can learn together. How about that?" “I’d really like that. Thank you.” She smiles. As they continued eating, Annika pressed for answers from Kai, but she did so gently, trying not to come across as interrogative. "So, you never really told me much about your life last time I asked," she said, her voice soft. "I don't mean to push or anything, but we're out in the middle of nowhere, and I think we're kind of past the point of being strangers. So spill." Kai chuckled a hint of amusement in his eyes. "Alright, alright," he said. "I'll tell you a little bit about myself." "So, I have this bumble bee tattoo on my forearm, right?" Kai said with a hint of nostalgia in his voice. Annika nodded, remembering the small tattoo she had noticed from when they first met. "Yes, I've been wondering about that." Kai chuckled. "Well, when I was a kid, my mom said I would buzz around in other people's business like a little busy bee. I personally thought I was a great detective. I mean, I found the neighbor's missing dog in only a couple of days. So give me a break, okay?" A soft smile played on Annika's lips. Remembering his mom seemed to have brought warmth to his eyes. "I'm so sorry you lost your mom," she said gently. "It seems like you had a strong bond with her." Kai brushed it off, trying to compose himself. "Eh, things happen," he said. "You move on. It's nice to have that little reminder of her, though." He grinned and took a bite of his sandwich. Kai continued his story. "Anyway, I had to learn about my werewolf side on my own. My dad was never in the picture, and my mom had just died. I was so angry that she was gone that I changed. I didn't know about my werewolf side until then. So, it's been a lot of trial and error for me. I learned the hard way, but I can teach you a few things so you don't have to go through what I went through over the years." He gave her a little wink. Annika's heart went out to Kai. She could feel the pain and loneliness he had felt when reminiscing. She was grateful that he was willing to share his experiences with her to help her navigate the challenges of her newfound werewolf identity. Annika felt a deep connection with Kai, a bond that transcended their differences. She realized that she had found someone who truly understood her and someone that she could connect with. Kai looks at Annika and then at the clock. “It’s getting late, we should get some rest.” As they were cleaning up their dinner, Annika remembered that she hadn't had a chance to pack anything before leaving the city. "Hey, do you have any clothes I could borrow? I didn't get a chance to pack anything before we left." Kai nodded. "Yeah, the room upstairs. You can probably find something in there that works. It’s all my clothes. I come out here from time to time to get away from all the noise. " Annika smiled. "Thanks." She stood up and headed upstairs to search for clothes. As Annika searched through the closet, she found a pair of cozy plaid fleece pajama pants and a black long-sleeve shirt. She smiled to herself, imagining how comfortable she would be in them. She quickly changed into the pajamas, feeling a sense of relief as she slipped into the soft fabric. The pants were warm and snug, and the shirt was perfect for the cool night air. As she walked down the stairs from the bedroom, Kai glanced at her. He couldn't help but smile at how the large clothes seemed to be swallowing her tiny body. "You look comfortable," he giggled. Annika grinned. "I feel comfortable," she replied. "These pajamas are so soft considering seeing what you wear on a day-to-day basis." She couldn't help but notice that Kai was only wearing a white wife beater and a pair of black sweatpants. He looked comfortable and relaxed, his muscles rippling beneath the thin fabric of his shirt, causing Annika to blush. "It must be very cold outside," Annika said, shivering slightly. "I can't seem to warm up. How are YOU not cold?" She curled up on the couch, wrapping herself in one of the thick blankets. Kai smiled and joined her on the couch. "Here, let me help you warm up," he said as he sat next to her and draped one of the soft, cozy blankets around her. “Now come here.” He wraps his arm around her pulling her close. Annika leaned into his arms. She couldn't help but grin as she felt his warmth radiating from his body and the touch of his surprisingly soft skin. "How come you're so cold?" Kai asked curiously. "You're a werewolf. You know you’re able to control your body temperature, right?" Annika shrugged. "I guess it's just something I haven't learned yet. Maybe it's because I'm still new to this whole werewolf thing. But you seem to have this ability mastered." Kai chuckled. "Don't worry. You'll get the hang of it. Something will trigger it to unlock." As they sat together on the couch, Annika felt a sense of comfort wash over her. Annika drifted off to sleep, curled up in Kai's arms on the couch. She must have been more exhausted than she realized, to have fallen asleep so quickly. Kai gently picked her up and carried her upstairs to the bedroom. He laid her down on the bed, tucking her in with the covers. As he was about to leave, he heard a soft voice. "Kai?" Annika called out in a whisper. He turned around and saw her eyes fluttering open. "Yes, Annika?" he replied softly. "I don't want to be alone," she said, her voice trembling slightly. "and I'm getting cold again, will come lay with me for a bit, just until I fall back asleep?" Kai's heart melted at her words. He climbed into bed beside her, wrapping his arms around her. As he held her close, Annika felt the sensation rush over her whole body. A sensation she felt in her dream from before.
