CHAPTER 01
"Mary! Mary! Get your ass up, you lazy bitch." Mary, who had only slept for two hours, groaned in annoyance at her aunt's high-pitched voice. "Coming Aunt Jane!" Mary yelled from her room and dashed to the bathroom to freshen up. She's got a lot of work to do today. She quickly took a bath and made her way to the ground floor. Her aunt was sitting in the living room, giving herself a manicure. She gave Mary a devilish look. In response, Mary rolled her eyes and walked towards the kitchen. There she saw her aunt's fat ass 12 year old son, Tom, eating the ice cream she'd saved for herself. Oh, Lord, why didn't you let me die in that car accident with my parents? Why do I have to live and survive with these idiots?  "Make Tom's favorite strawberry pancakes and serve them with a banana ice cream milkshake to him. Then clean my room. You only have 10 minutes to finish up the breakfast." After ordering Mary, Aunt Jane went to her room. Mary sighed and began preparing breakfast. "Your breakfast is ready, Tommy. Hurry up, you're running late for school." "Don't call me that, you ugly pig," Tom spit back at her. Mary gave him a sad smile and nodded. No one in the house has ever respected her. Aunt Jane's family has never been a favorite of hers. She took authority over Mary after her parents died in a car accident 5 years before. She gave her a small, run-down room in which to live. Mary had to give up her studies because her aunt and uncle refused to pay her school fees. She decided to work part-time in a nearby public library. She used the money to buy herself some necessities. She has to do all of the housework at other times. In the beginning, she would get a high fever from working all day because her parents never let her do any housework. She would cry all night remembering her life with her adoring parents. Oh, Mom and Dad! I really miss you. She came out of her thoughts when she heard something breaking. "OMG Tom! What have you done?"  Tom slipped the glass bottle from his grasp. The shattered glass and liquid inside it splattered all over the kitchen. "Oppsies! Guess someone needs to clean up the mess and make me a new glass of milkshake." Tom said in an innocent tone. Mary gave him a lethal look. Tom smirked in return. "b***h, hurry up. I'm running late." Tom yelled at her and went into his room. Mary took a look at her watch. It's already been 10 minutes. Aunt Jane will kill me for sure. Mary paused for a moment before beginning to clean up the mess Tom created. She made him another glass of his drink and dashed into Aunt Jane's room. "You're late, girl," Aunt Jane said calmly, not looking at her."I-I'm sorry ma'am. Tom made a mess in the kitchen, and I have to clean it up-" A hard slap landed on her right cheek. "Did I gave you the permission to speak?" Aunt Jane became enraged and yelled at her. "No Aunt Jane." Another slap landed on the same side. "You spoke once again without my permission. Get out of my way. I'm disgusted by your appearance. You will clean this room after I have left for work. Do you understand?" Mary gave a slight nod. She exited the room, wiping away the tiny tears from her eyes. Even though she was used to it, these cruel acts always made her cry. She sat there, waiting for her aunt to leave. She cleaned her room, did the laundry, and cooked dinner. When she finished her work, it was already 8 p.m. A soft knock was heard on the door. Mary rushed to open the door knowing it was her uncle who had arrived. "Welcome home, Uncle Robert," Robert responded with a hum. "Serve the dinner, girl." Jane ordered her around and went to the dining room. Mary went to her room after serving them dinner. She stretched her body and sighed in relief. "Puff finally, I have time to read my favorite book. She yelped in excitement and took out the book she'd bought with the money she saved. Mary was always engrossed in fantasies. She enjoyed reading books about demons, fairies, and witches, but she never believed in their existence. She took her new book out of its packaging.  The title "The Demon King" was given on the cover, and below it was a drawing of a man with red glowing eyes and pointed ears. "Woah! You are one hell of a hot demon.” Mary chuckled and began reading the book. She yawned and looked at the time. s**t! It's 3AM already. She hid the book beneath her mattress and rushed to take a quick bath. She came out of the bathroom to find her room completely dark. Hummm I don't recall turning off the lights. She turned on the light bulb, but it didn't lighten up. She tried again, but it didn't work. She turned her gaze to the bathroom light, which was working fine. It's the bulb I guess. She lit the small candle she had taken from the side table. Out of nowhere, she felt someone’s presence behind her. She spun around to see, but no one was there. She thought it was her imagination, but then she noticed someone standing in one of her rooms' corners. Fear ran through her spine. She wanted to dash out of her room, but her legs wouldn't support her. The moon's light was somehow allowing her to see in the dark. It has to be a man. He is a tall man. Uncle Robert and Tommy do not stand this tall. It could be an intruder. She thought as she wiped the cold drops of sweat from her brow. She took all her courage and ask the intruder who he was. There was no response. She moved closer to the shadow figure, her legs trembling. As she got closer to the figure, her fear grew, her heart beat faster, and her breathing became more rapid. She moved the candle closer to his face in order to get a better look at him. A pair of red glowing eyes emerged from the shadows and approached her. Mary let out a lethal scream, threw the candle to the ground, and dashed towards the door. She screamed even louder as she descended the stairs. Her aunt and uncle came out of their room right away. "Why are you screaming at this hour, you moron?" Her aunt yelped, her voice sleepy. "Aunt J-Jane t-there's there’s someone in my r-room "Mary said in a terrified tone. Jane gave her a deadly look. "Robert, can you please go check to see if anyone is in there?" Robert hummed in return and walked upstairs to her room. Aunt Jane kept staring at Mary. "THERE IS NO ONE HERE JANE!" yelled Robert from Mary's room. Jane slapped Mary across the face. Mary lost her balance and landed with a thud on the ground. "You scumbag! How dare you to disturb our sleep this hour!” Robert walked downstairs. He saw Jane slapping Mary but did nothing to stop her. He simply entered his room and shut the door. "I'm warning you, if you do this stupid stunt in my house again, I'll throw you out to sleep with the stray dogs.Do you understand that?" Jane screamed at the poor soul. Mary gave a slight nod of her head and waited for her aunt to leave. She returned to her room, still terrified. She switched on the light in her room and it worked for her surprise. She observed every corner of her room and bathroom, but there was no one else in that space. But those eyes. I saw them. It can't possibly be my hallucination. She thought. She went to wash her face in the bathroom. She noticed a large red rash on her face where her aunt had slapped her. A tear streamed down her cheek. She quickly wiped her face and returned to her bed. She wrapped the blanket around her head to calm herself down. She heard movement in the room again after a minute, but she didn't dare to remove her blanket. She cried in silence until she fell asleep.
