Kira’s heart was hammering in her chest. Her thoughts seemed to be moving a thousand miles an hour, despite her exhaustion.
“That’s it!” Trevor said over her shoulder. “See? I never doubted you for a second. Now let’s take it and get out of here.”
Kira held out a hand to grip his wrist before he could touch anything. Unlike her, his hands were bare.
“We can’t take it,” she said. She realized the words were true the moment before she uttered them.
Trevor spluttered. “What? Why not?”
“Because it’s evidence.” Kira turned around to face him. “If we take it from the car and turn it in, who will believe where we got it from? Besides, we don’t know for sure what’s on it yet. What if it turns out to be Reid’s accounting laptop?”
