16 Kira didn’t bother with Adam’s voice mail. She tapped a button on her phone to call him back. Trevor stood close beside her, shifting from one foot to the other. His haggard features were twisted into a mask of confusion and concern. Adam answered on the first ring. “Kira! Thank God—” “What happened?” Kira demanded without preamble. She rubbed at the side of her aching head. She knew Adam was probably freaking out, but she didn’t have the time or energy for hysterics. She heard Adam take a ragged breath on the other end of the phone. “Sara says Kori went off to work, just like usual.” Kira nodded.
