Chapter 1
Jamie returned from his usual morning run, the cool breeze still swirling around him like a friendly ghost. He glanced at the clock and realized he was running behind schedule, his heart racing from more than just the workout. He dashed into the bathroom, where a refreshing splash of cold water woke him up fully and transformed his post-run glow into a sharp readiness.
Once out, he slid into a well-fitted black suit, its fabric hugging his frame perfectly as if it were made just for him. He reached for his favorite watch—an exquisite timepiece gifted by his ex that always reminded him of the best moments they shared. Today, it felt like an armor, a shield of confidence for the day ahead.
He hopped into his sleek car, the engine purring to life like a contented cat. With a swift glance in the rearview mirror, he straightened his tie, a smile creeping onto his face as he envisioned the day ahead, filled with meetings and the thrill of success.
Upon arrival at the office, he was greeted by the familiar symphony of admiration and warm greetings from the staff. Their smiles were like a sunbeam piercing through a cloudy day. Jamie couldn’t help but respond with a charming smile and a nod, appreciating the small moments in his busy life.
He walked elegantly towards the private lift, the polished floor reflecting not just his image but also the ambition that sparkled in his eyes. As the doors closed with a soft swoosh, he took a deep breath, ready to conquer whatever challenges awaited him on the other side. Today was just another day—but in Jamie's world, every day was an opportunity for greatness.
“Good morning Sir, here's your coffee” Rose, his secretary, handed the cup to him. This was her routine every morning immediately after he came out of the lift.
“Thank you.” He sipped from the coffee. ”Where's Lona?” He inquired.
“She was just here a minute ago.” She glanced at the area to see if she could spot her. Jamie knew she was late again and Rose was covering up for her. He gave his bag to her and they walked side by side towards his office.
“Stop!!!” He said abruptly.
He carefully observed the office. He looked at his desk and noticed a slight change in the arrangement of the pens, also the positioning of his chair was altered, it took someone meticulous enough to notice.
“Someone was here.” Jamie said. Rose looked around but everything seemed okay to her.
“Get me the CCTV footage from last night.” He instructed.
“Okay Sir” She hurriedly went out.
He walked straight to the safe, which was hidden behind a piece of artwork. He input the PIN and opened the safe. He noticed a timer beeping that was already at 15 seconds. Quickly, he ran out of the office and dove to the ground. Seconds later, he heard no explosion, though his body was still trembling. Summoning his courage, he went to check it out. He noticed that the timer was connected to a grenade, and everything in the safe was intact. However, there was a strange letter inside.
When Rose returned, she saw her boss holding the grenade, and she was perplexed.
“Is that a grenade Sir?” She inquired in a trembling voice. Jamie could sense the fear in her.
“It's a fake, nothing to worry about. And the CCTV?”
“Sir, the footage of last night is missing,” She reported. Jamie was startled.
Sir should I call the police or…?
There's no need for that. You may leave. And make sure no one hears about what happened. He instructed. He glanced out at the cityscape, grounding himself in the rhythm of the world below. The bustle of life continued, oblivious to the storm brewing in his office. He needed a plan, one that would uncover the person behind the note and thwart whatever game was being played.
With the city sprawling beneath him, Jamie sighed deeply. He needed to focus, to decipher whatever mystery this letter held. He approached his desk, carefully placing the grenade on it as if it were a fragile artifact. His heart raced as he tore open the envelope, revealing a single sheet of paper with neat, deliberate handwriting.
As he read, the words seemed to taunt him.
*"To the one who thinks he has it all figured out, the game has just begun. Trust no one, not even those closest to you."*
The note continued with a series of cryptic clues that hinted at a larger scheme. The first clue mentioned a place within the office, suggesting there was more than met the eye. Jamie's mind raced; he had enemies, but none that he considered would go so far.
Lona’s lateness suddenly felt suspicious. She had worked closely with him on key projects and was privy to sensitive information, and it had only been three months since she started working with me. And then there was Rose—loyal but ever so doting; could she be hiding something?
He took a deep breath, trying to maintain composure as panic bubbled at the edges of his mind. This was not just a prank. Whoever had done this intended to send a message, and he needed to respond quickly.
The sound of a pen hitting the ground disrupted his thoughts. He looked up to see what it was…
“Good morning, Sir,” Lona, his P.A., greeted him.
“You're late again,” he said in his usual calm but disappointing tone. He tucked the letter into the inner pocket of his jacket, then turned his gaze toward her as he walked closer.
He locked eyes with her, trying to intimidate her to see if she was lying. He was still trying to figure out if she had anything to do with the break-in and the letter.
“I'm sorry, Sir. It won't happen again,” she said, looking downcast.
“My schedule!” He concluded in his mind that he would uncover the truth and find out who's behind it.
“You have a shareholders meeting today at 9 a.m., which is likely to begin in the next 10 minutes. It says here that you have a memorial to attend, but the location isn't specified.”
“Oh yes, I'm aware. What’s next?”
“And lastly, you have a meeting with our branch managers.”
“About that, I don't think I will make it back on time, so please inform the managers that we are rescheduling. They shouldn't bother to come over.”
“Okay, Sir.”
Just then, the secretary walked in.
“Sir, the shareholders are waiting for you.”
“Alright. Let's go,” he instructed.

"This is the last flat that is vacant. I hope you like it?” the realtor said.
“It seems quite spacious compared to the other two.”
“Oh yes, it is!"
"Is it above or below my budget?” Sofia inquired.
“It’s slightly above your budget.” Just then, her phone rang. She quickly glanced at the screen to identify the caller. “Take your time and have a good look at the place. I’ll be outside if you need anything. Excuse me..." The realtor walked outside to take the call.
Sofia wandered around the house; she loved it. Suddenly, she heard a strange noise coming from the backyard. Curious, she opened the door and stepped out, but the creaking door startled the squirrels, which scurried up the tree.
“Wow, this is big, and there's a garden!” she murmured to herself with a big smile on her face. Buzzzzzzz buzzzzzzz. Her phone vibrated in her bag. “Hello, Mum.”
“How's the apartment?” her mum inquired.
“It's nice! It's more spacious than our current one. And you know what? There's a garden out back.”
“Really? That's great! I can't wait to see it!”
“Hopefully soon, Mum. I hope you've taken your medications?”
“I told you not to worry. I'm fine. I've taken all my medications. You worry too much. And please remember to get my favorite snack on your way back,” Sofia chuckled.
“Yes, Mum, I will get it. This is the fifth time you’ve mentioned it.” She looked at the clock and realized she was running late for the train. “Alright, Mum, I have to go. Bye!” She hung up. “Oh my gosh, I lost track of time! I have to hurry before I miss the train.”
