Chapter 1: In Medias Res
"If you die tonight, Bruno, no one in Zurich will even remember your name." The heavy steel rod cracked against Bruno's collarbone with a sickening crunch. Pain erupted across his left side, blinding and absolute, pinning him hard against the damp concrete wall of the narrow alley. The cold Swiss air reeked of diesel exhaust, stale beer, and the dark metallic tang of his own blood. It was 2:15 AM, and the relentless night was swallowing his broken body whole. "Mahardika sends his warmest regards from his penthouse suite," the lead enforcer sneered, leaning in dangerously close. His breath reeked of bitter espresso and cheap tobacco. "He told us to make sure you felt every single second of your sudden fall." Bruno coughed violently, spitting a mixture of crimson and phlegm onto the man’s polished leather shoes. He tried to speak, to hurl one final defiant insult, but his throat was clogged with his own warm fluids. His knees buckled under the raw force of the assault, yet two heavy hands shoved him back upright against the wet bricks. The rough texture of the wall scraped through his ruined designer shirt. "Hold his arm still," the lead enforcer ordered, turning his head toward his silent partner. "We need to make sure he can never sign another contract or hold a pen again." The second man stepped forward, his heavy tactical boot pressing down on Bruno's shoulder to lock him in place. Bruno pulled against the constraint with everything he had left, but his muscles failed him completely. The sheer exhaustion of a three-day hunt through the freezing city had drained every ounce of his legendary physical endurance. He was trapped, cornered, and entirely at their mercy. The lead enforcer drew a long, rusted blade from beneath his heavy trench coat. The dull metal flickered under the dim, yellowed streetlight, jagged along the edge like a saw. "You should have stayed a quiet, obedient puppet, Richter," the man whispered, pressing the point of the blade directly against Bruno’s coat, right over his ribcage. "Instead, you forced us to clean up this entire mess." "Go straight to hell," Bruno rasped, his voice barely a breath against the steady hum of distant city traffic. "I will reserve a seat for you right next to me," the man replied with a cruel chuckle. With a sudden, violent thrust, the enforcer drove the rusted steel deep into Bruno's lower chest. The agony was immediate and absolute, a white-hot spike that pierced straight through his flesh and scraped along the bone. Bruno opened his mouth in a silent scream as his vision flickered rapidly between blinding light and pitch blackness. The cold edge of the blade tore through muscle and cartilage without resistance. "Twist it a little bit," the second enforcer urged, watching the blood soak into the fabric with a cold grin. "Make sure the wound stays wide open." The lead enforcer followed the advice, turning the steel handle slightly before pulling it free with a wet, slick sound. Blood gushed instantly from the deep puncture, soaking through Bruno’s trousers and pooling on the wet ground. "Leave him to rot," the leader grunted, wiping the filthy blade on the sleeve of Bruno's coat. "The rain will wash what's left of him into the storm drains before dawn even breaks." The heavy footsteps echoed down the narrow alleyway, fading gradually as the enforcers melted into the dark Zurich night. Bruno slid down the wet concrete wall, his body collapsing sideways onto the freezing pavement. The puddle beneath him turned dark purple under the streetlamp, swirling with the torrents of icy water draining off the roof eaves. The rain fell harder now, stinging his open skin like hundreds of needle pricks. He couldn't move his legs no matter how hard he commanded his nerves to react. The piercing cold was invading his body from the outside in, numbing his fingertips and slowing his erratic heartbeat to a sluggish crawl. Above him, the narrow strip of sky visible between the massive high-rise buildings offered no stars, only endless gray clouds. The towers of his family's enterprise seemed to mock his helpless state from a distance. Is this really how the proud Richter line ends, he thought, his conscious mind beginning to fray wildly at the edges. Beaten in a filthy gutter like a street dog while an imposter sleeps in my home? A strange, unnatural calm began to settle over his frantic thoughts as his body went into severe shock. The excruciating pain in his chest turned dull, replaced by a deep, icy void that opened up inside his soul. The sheer terror of dying was rapidly fading away, giving way to something far more sinister, sharp, and focused. It was an overwhelming, suffocating tide of pure, unadulterated malice. If his heart stopped beating tonight, it would stop while burning with a single, absolute purpose that defied physical death. His survival was no longer a matter of luck; it was a matter of total vengeance. He pressed his trembling, cold palm over the gaping wound in his ribs, feeling the thick slurry of blood oozing continuously between his fingers. He squeezed his eyes shut against the darkness, forcing his failing mind to anchor itself to one name, one face. "Mahardika," Bruno whispered into the wet night air, the name tasting like poison on his tongue. Mahardika had systematically dismantled his reputation, seized his legal assets, and ordered his execution in an obscure alleyway. But as Bruno lay dying in the freezing rain, a dark promise took root in the deepest corner of his shattered mind. "I will tear your entire empire down stone by stone," Bruno muttered to the empty shadows around him, his voice raspy and dripping with blood. "I will strip away everything you love until you have nothing left." The rain continued to fall without mercy, soaking his broken frame as his physical sight finally faded into complete, absolute blackness. His pulse fluttered weakly, skipping several beats at a time as his brain shut down non-essential functions. Then, a sudden, blinding shaft of light cut through the deep gloom of the deserted alleyway. A quiet, high-performance engine hummed nearby, followed by the soft, urgent click of fast footsteps splashing through the deep puddles toward his motionless body. The light grew brighter, illuminating the rain that bounced off his chest. A slender figure kneeled down beside him in the mud, checking for a pulse at his neck with cold, precise, and professional fingers. The hands were steady, trained, and entirely devoid of hesitation. "You are still breathing, you foolish man," a smooth, calm female voice murmured softly over the steady roar of the rain. Bruno tried to open his eyes to see his savior, but his eyelids felt like lead weights forged in fire. He could only hear the quick rustle of a heavy leather medical kit being unzipped right next to his left ear. "Hold on, Bruno," she whispered, plunging a syringe filled with clear fluid directly into the side of his neck. "If you die now, Mahardika wins everything." The strong chemical rushed through his bloodstream, shocking his failing heart back into a forceful rhythm. Bruno let out a sharp, gasping breath as the fluid burned through his veins like liquid fire. "Who are you?" Bruno managed to croak out, his voice cracking violently under the physical strain. "Someone who needs you alive," the woman answered, wrapping a heavy pressure bandage tightly around his gushing chest wound. "Now keep quiet and save your strength." "I don't need your pity," Bruno rasped, his vision swimming in blurry shapes of grey and bright white light. "It isn't pity, Mr. Richter," she said, signaling toward the dark van idling at the mouth of the alley. "It's an investment in a mutual war." Two heavy set men in plain tactical uniforms hurried out from the vehicle, carrying a folding transport stretcher between them. They moved with military efficiency, lifting Bruno's limp body off the freezing concrete with careful precision. "Watch his side," the woman commanded sharply as they loaded him onto the canvas frame. "The blade tore through his intercostal tissue. Any sudden movement will rupture his lung completely." "He's lost too much blood, Lea," one of the men warned, his voice deep and urgent. "He won't make the drive across town if his blood pressure drops any further." "He will survive because he has no choice," Lea replied coldly, hopping into the back of the van right beside the stretcher. "Start the engine and get us back to the primary facility immediately." The heavy rear doors slammed shut with a metallic bang, locking out the rain, the alley, and the freezing night air. The van accelerated quickly, its tires screeching against the wet asphalt as it merged into the sleeping city traffic. Inside the dark cabin, hanging medical lamps flickered to life overhead. Lea cut away the remains of Bruno's expensive suit jacket with surgical scissors, exposing the dark, jagged wound torn into his side. "You survived the first round, Bruno," Lea said, hanging a bag of synthetic blood plasma on a hook near his head and driving an IV needle into his arm. "But the world thinks you are dead." Bruno stared up at the reinforced ceiling of the moving vehicle, feeling the mechanical thrum of the engine vibration passing through his spine. The cold numbness in his limb was slowly receding, replaced once again by the blinding, agonized screaming of his nerves. "Let them think I'm dead," Bruno whispered, his eyes narrowing into cold slits as the medicine began to pull him under into a deep, forced sleep. "It makes it easier to hunt them." "Your family's legacy is gone, Bruno," Lea reminded him, checking his vital signs on a small hand-held monitor. "Your accounts are frozen, and your name is being scrubbed from the global news networks as we speak." "Names can be replaced," Bruno muttered, his voice growing heavier with every passing second as the sedatives took hold of his brain. "Legacies can be rebuilt over the ashes of my enemies." Lea looked down at his bloodied face, impressed despite herself by the sheer, unyielding stubbornness keeping his heart pumping against all physical odds. There was no fear left in his expression, only a dark, hollow void waiting to consume everything in its path. "Sleep now, Bruno Richter," Lea said softly, turning off the primary overhead lamp to leave the back of the van in shadow. "Tomorrow, your real nightmare begins." Bruno closed his eyes, surrendering to the quiet darkness, while deep inside his mind, the embers of total retribution burned bright and unquenchable.
